Judy, I have an idea of who I think she might be but not sure. If its who I think is might be she is never listed as J. F. in any of the census that I have. And if its the person I'm thinking her name and age are never listed the same in the census. I don't find a marriage record for Andrew Carter and a Kemp in the records online. I wanted to ask if you have a copy of her death certificate? Mary Knight I recently received information stating that my g-grandfather, Andrew Carter - b. 1847, TN., and the son of Harlan Carter and Joanna Davis m. Frances / Fanny Kemp. Frances was also b. in abt. 1847 in TN. and some information indicates that Frances had a first name that began with the letter "J", as the grave marker for one of her sons lists her name as J.F. Carter. Does anyone have any information that connects a Frances Kemp, or J. Frances Kemp to any of the various Kemp families that were known to be living in Smith or Macon Counties between 1860 - 1870? I Would also like to know more about the Kemp family in general, any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Don, I am also researching an Owen family in Smith County. I have an Elizabeth Owen b. abt. 1863 in TN. She had at least one brother, Jim Owen and at least one sister, Lena. Her parents may have been Barnett Owen b. abt. 1821 and Rebecca b. abt 1826. Elizabeth married a Boulton. Does any of this connect with your line? Thanks, Claudia
Don & Claudia, I checked the list for these surnames below. The only one I found of any was: Bertran Owen spouse of Cornelia Brent. The ancestry was that of Fanny Green who md George M. Parsons and their dau Elizabeth Parsons md George Brent..etc. down to Bertran & Cornelia. Melba, your post is very interesting even without my ancestral names included. Culpepper was a meeting place for wagon trains moving west. It is said that people left messages for following families on a BB board on the front of a local store. A full story of that meeting place in Culpepper would be very interesting. Smith County, TN is where my Owen family lived and I'm trying to push their travels to the west backward to see where they came from. Family story is Virginia for both Owen and Rutledge. They may have all came down the Cumberland trail. TO PERSONS OF INTEREST In 1976 while in the Arizona State Library and Archives I found a very large pedigree chart on the Green families of Culpepper, Va. Unable to check this out I paid them to copy it for me. When computers came into being my husband did a surname (name sorted list of 50 pgs) list of this chart as well as a descendancy chart. These begin with William Green and Eleanor Duff abt 1675. Some of these lines are known to have come into Tennessee. I am also in possession of a handwritten letter of 8 Sept 1952 to my father, Marvin Green(e) from F. G. Percival of Knoxville who states his ggggrfather is Lewis Green 1751 of Russell County, Va.. He writes some family came into what is now Harlan Co., Ky and some into Nashville, Tn. "Zarhariah, with the Paynes moved to the Cumberland settlement (now Nashville)...In route Lewis Sr died...Later Lewis' widow (Sara) md Mathew Payne - the father of their daughter Sara's husband, Josiah Payne." This letter is 3 1/2 pages long 8 x 10. His family and those on the pedigree chart connect. I am putting this information on the site in case anyone is interested and has connections.
