I need some help please! I received an e-mail recently from a lady looking for THOMAS CARTWRIGHT who lived in Difficult from about 1820. According to her information, he (Thomas Cartwright) is listed in the 1860 Smith County census - age 83 (b. North Carolina 1777; d.Difficult, Smith Co. 1869). If anyone has access to the Smith County Cemetery records, I would appreciate a look up for Thomas Cartwright or other Cartwrights. Thanks so much. 1. Re Kemps/Death Certificates
    2. Eldon Wilkins
    3. Attention: Gary, Judith, Fay, Mary, Bill and other Kemp researchers. 1) Francis Kemp death cert states died Aug 29, 1909, a female died age 27 and married at time of death in Difficult, Tenn. which would make her birth year 1882. I wonder if this could be Johanna Francis Green b 18 July 1878; d 28 Aug 1909 (Yes I see the birth year would be different but the death date is close. She married C. D. (Tobe) Kemp 14 Feb 1902 in Smith Co. and was the d/o James Green 1821-1888 and Nancy Smith 1838-1912. Pg 190 N/C - Francis Kemp b 18 July 1878 - d 28 Aug 1909. If these Francis are one and the same she would have died at age 31 not age 27. It is something to work with but need to verify... I do know I have found some errors in these death certificates. 2) Susie Kemp b 25 Sept 1887 in Monoville, Smith, Tenn. d 29 June 1937 in Monoville, Smith, Tn.; buried 30 June 1937 in Sanderson Cem., Smith Co. I have same info as on death cert. The informant is that of her husband R. J Kemp. Susie is d/io Henry Beasley & Sarah Alice Taylor (went by Alice). Pg 120 N/C Henry Beasley 15 Oct 1855 - 5 Feb 1929; Alice next to him listed as Alice Beasley 27 Apr 1860 - 18 Oct 1952. Henry & Alice are buried in the Beasley Cem. Pg 131 N/C in the Sanderson Cem is Susie Beasley Kemp same dates as above; w/o R. J.Kemp 6 Mar 1881 - 14 Oct 1962. Buried next to Susie & R. J. are E. O. Kemp 16 Feb 1860 - 22 Aug 1942 and J. R. Kemp 16 Aug 1845 - 26 Nov 1916. This death certificate is funny....it lists Susie as having the occupation of HOUSEWIFE. The question regarding last time held this position is 1937 (year of her death). The doc forgot to answer the question as to the number of years she held this position. I have never seen these questions answered before for a female.l 3) Katerine Kemp born 26 oct 1924 in Tenn died 26 Oct 1924; born, died, and buried in Dixon Springs on 27 Oct 1924. The death cert. states she is the d/o Lurley Clarence Kemp and Alice Bassie Andrews Kemp. In the Will Gregory Cem (Pg 137 N/C is the following: Lendy/Lurley C. Kemp b 2 mar 1897 - 2 Apr 1968 and be him is Bassie A. Kemp b 21 Oct 1897 - no death date is shown. I carefully checked the Dixon Springs listings and did not find Katerine (Infant) Kemp. Perhaps there is no stone. 4) Ellen Blackburn Kemp b 25 Nov 1901 in Smith 17th Dist; d age 35 yrs 3 mos 18 days in Smith Co. ...the death date is smudged, however in the N/C pg 173 is Lina Ellen Kemp 25 Nov 1901 -13 Mar 1937. Ellen was buried of the 14th Mar 1937 in Defeated's Defeated Memorial Cem., Sm. Co. Tthe death cert states she was married at time of death to Stanton Kemp and was the d/o John Blackburn and Mahaley Winfree. Pg 173 N/C are the following near one another: Eliza Mae Kemp 18 May 1902 - no date of death shown on t.stone; Jasper Stanton Kemp 7 July 1900 - 14 Aug 1967, followed by Lina Ellen Kemp 25 Nov 1902 - 13 Mar 1937. Could not locate Ellen's parents graves. More next week. Melba

    2. Dear List, TSLA has indexed the names of the persons for whom there are biographical sketches in Goodspeed's History of Tennessee (all the Tennessee several volumes) and will, for a modest fee copy the pages of any particular persons you are interested in. Go to the site below for a list of the names, the county, and the page number from the specific volume: _http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/history/misc/goodspeed.htm_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/history/misc/goodspeed.htm) Best wishes, Gale Williams Bamman

    3. Thru inter-library loan I have gotten Goodspeeds for areas such as Northwest Arkansas, etc.....on loan for I think it was 3 weeks. That alone was a normal size book, I think they are usually seperated by counties, rather than an entire state. Some are done for an area, such as Northwestern Arkansas, or you can even find the individual county ones. I am not sure they are for every state, I just know about Arkansas and Tennessee. Seems I have seen individual county Goodspeed's for Tennessee for sale thru Sistler. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Kelly" <ocollaugh@comcast.net> To: <TNSMITH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2005 12:26 PM Subject: Re: [TNSMITH] History of Smith county > It was and is great. > > I always wondered how broad a net he cast......how many bios he wrote, and > where did he write them. > > He captured my great grandfather Kelly in Arkansas and my ggfather(s) > Williamson and Beebe in Iowa. > > It would be nice if this individual shared his/her treasure trove. 3. Ok Judy, I'm going to tell you what I think but her age is off about 3 to 4 years according to census from your Frances. Don't take any of this as fact because I don't know for sure and don't know for sure how to prove it. But this is the only Kemp daughter I could come up with that was anywhere close to your Francis. I did look on Warren Co. KY website and it appears your Frances died in 1927? You can probably get her death certificate and see if it lists her parents. If your not familiar with Cal's column that is transcribed online. This may confuse you so if you have questions please ask. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsmith/ccarticles/may17-AB-1951.htm "Jack and Barbara Jones Kemp were the parents of: Peggy Kemp, married a Carter; Aulsey Kemp, married a Wakefield; Allen Kemp, married a McClellan, Dycus and a Sadler; Ben, was of feeble mental power; Willie Kemp, married a Clark; Jane Kemp, married a Wakefield; Betsy Kemp, no further record; Tilda Kemp, married a Russell; and later Edler V. Sanders, a Baptist Minister." Let me pick apart this statement from Cal's column on the children of John "Jack" Kemp and Barbara Jones Kemp. 1. Cal lists a child Peggy Kemp married a CARTER. I find no Peggy or Margaret Kemp listed among the children of John & Barbara in any of the census records. 2. Aulsey Kemp (Ausie Peyton Kemp, from his death certificate) married Mary Josephine Wakefield 3. Allen Kemp married Arabella Elizabeth Sadler abt 1882, I have yet to find a McClellan and Dycus marriage for him. 4. Ben, of feeble mental power - I find no Ben in the census records of John and Barbara's children. And nothing noting anything wrong with any of them. If there was a Ben it was either a nickname of one of the children or he died before ever showing up in any census? 5. Willie Kemp - This one's a puzzle. I don't know if Cal' is talking about son William or Wyley when he says "Willie". In any case he only mentions one of them. I'm going to skip info on these two for now. 6. Jane married a Wakefield. I believe this might be incorrect also. I'm working on this. But I think this Jane Kemp may have married William H. Kirby whose mother was a Wakefield. More on her later also. 7. Betsy or Elizabeth, I have nothing further on her either. 8. Tilda married a Russell & later Edler V. Sanders, I have not found her with either of her husbands yet. Now looking at census info on John & Barbara Jones Kemp's family. 1850 Smith County Census. Kemp John 36 b. TN farmer Kemp Barbara 36 b. TN Kemp Betsey 9 b. TN Kemp Alsey 7 b. TN (listed as female should be male) Kemp Judy 6 b. TN (ca 1844) Kemp Allen 4 b. TN Kemp Matilda 2 b. TN Kemp Jane 3/12 b. TN Alsey age 7 is should be listed as male not female and is Ausie Peyton Kemp. 1860 Smith Co. Kemp Rebecca 46 (Barbara) Kemp Elizabeth 20 Kemp Alice 18 ( again listed as female, but I believe this is Ausie Peyton Kemp) Kemp Juda B. 17 (f) (ca 1843) (this I think may be who Cal refers to as Peggy who married a Carter?) Kemp Allen 13 Kemp Matilda 8 Kemp James 7 (this should be Jane?) Kemp Wyly 6 Kemp Wm. 4 http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/smith/census/1860/0281a.gif If you look at the image on this it's very hard to make out Barbara's name. Also look at Juda B. personally I'm not sure that the middle initial is a "B"? But I don't know what it is, it doesn't look like and "F" either. 1870 Macon. Co. Kemp Barbee 56 Kemp Allen 24 Kemp Matilda 21 Kemp Jane 19 (listed as James in 1860?, I think this is the Jane Kemp that married William H. Kirby) Kemp Willie 18 (must be Wyly) Kemp William T. 13 By 1870 Judy or Juda B. is no longer listed with her mother. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsmith/census/1870/70A.HTM Carter, Andrew 23 b. TN Carter, Fannie 23 b. TN Carter, Madison 6 b. TN Carter, Paschel 3 b. TN Carter, Elisabeth 1 b. TN By 1870 Andrew and Fannie are married. Judging from the children I would say they married 1860-1864. But if this were Juda her age should be about 26-27 according to previous census. Anyway this is the only person I could come up with that was anywhere close to your Frances in age with a name begining with "J." The only Frances I have close to her age was married to someone else so it couldn't be her. I would say your best bet to proving any of this is to get a copy of her death certificate and see if it lists her parents as John Kemp and Barbara Jones? Mary Knight Re Frances / Fanny Kemp Hi Mary, I don't personally have any documents stating that the maiden name of Frances / Fanny Carter was Kemp, but according to other relatives, Frances Kemp is the name listed on the death certificate of her youngest son, Houston Carter, who was born in about 1847 in Warren County, KY. I am hoping to receive a copy of the Houston's death certificate within the next few days. Also, with the exception of the initials JF that were engraved on the grave marker of one of her sons, as far as I know, the only way her name is ever listed is Frances or Fanny. 3. If I had the book and it as legal to do so I would gladly do a site and transcribe it. Everyone needs all the help we can get in research. Helen I have a copy of the original book of North Carolina Wills and Inventories by J. Bryan Grimes published in 1912. It has been republished by (can't think of the publisher at the moment) but I was posting stuff from the book and was told I was told that because it had been republished it was copyrighted. I called the publisher and they told me that the only thing they could copyright was their new index and that I could post or publish anything I wanted from my original copy. I've see where some county histories from 1880's 1890's era have been republished but I don't believe anyone can copyright the orginal work if they republish it. They can only copyright their version which would probably only include a new index. So Helen if I understand all this correctly, if you find a copy of an original publication of Goodspeeds you can transcribe it and put it anywhere you want. Mary Knight

The Smith County History book was published in 1986 - put together by the Genealogical & Historical Society in connection with the "Homecoming Committee". Fifth printing was done in 2003 is when I got my copy. Doubt they have any left but you could always check with the Smith Co. Historical society. Mary Knight
