Did any of them move say 1835-1840 to Van Buren Co AR? I ask because Peter Turney of Smith Co moved early 1835 and on the 1840 VBC AR census are some Owen/Owens.... Peggy, Thanks for your input. My records indicate that Enoch died from complications resulting from having both legs cut of by a thrasher (ouch!). Also, I have all four of Enoch and Tabitha's children as having been born in Jackson County, TN, so that would lead me to believe that Enoch and Tabitha did live there. Here's what I have on Enoch and Tabitha and their family: Children of ENOCH CARTER and ELENDER HUFF are: i. CALIFORNIA4 CARTER, b. 1842; m. SIMON P. ROBERTS. ii. ELIZABETH CARTER, b. 1843. iii. SARAH FRANCES CARTER, b. 1845; m. ROBERT BYRNE. iv. JAMES CALHOUN CARTER, b. 07 Feb 1847, Granville, Jackson County, TN; d. 27 Jun 1912, Musckogee, OK. v. JOSEPH CARTER, b. Abt. 1851. vi. RUTH CARTER, b. Abt. 1853. vii. MARTHA CARTER, b. Abt. 1854. viii. WILLIAM H. CARTER, b. Abt. 1855. ix. CICERO CARTER, b. Abt. 1857, Tennessee; m. MILLIE CARTER; b. 1862, Flynn's Lick, Jackson County, TN. x. ALLEN RICHARD CARTER, b. Abt. 1861. Children of ENOCH CARTER and TABITHA GOAD are: xi. ALFRED REMUS4 CARTER, b. 16 Oct 1869, Jackson County, TN; d. 05 Apr 1955; m. (1) ARZILLA TONEY; m. (2) HEMMIE HAYNIE. xii. THOMAS DAVID CARTER, b. 07 Oct 1870, Jackson County, TN; d. 27 Mar 1922, Smith County, Tennessee. xiii. DOCTOR FINK CARTER, b. Jul 1872, Jackson County, TN; d. 20 Apr 1936. xiv. LASSIE ELINA CARTER, b. 10 May 1874, Jackson County, TN; d. 14 Aug 1953; m. WILLIAM H. BUSH. Thomas David Carter, listed above as the 2nd child of Enoch and Tabitha, was my gg grandfather. I have more on his descendents and can drill down further on him if you like. Let me know. Bobby: Your Groner and Martha Ann (Williams) Owen/Owens are listed in the 1850 and 1860 Macon County census. The Macon County History book reflects that Groner's Dad was Thomas Owen born 1790. In the 1850 Macon County census Groner and Martha Ann Owen are living next door to Richard and Sarah Willisms. Richard and Sarah are both 46 years of age and Sarah's maiden name is listed as Owens in the 1860 Macon County census. Marc, Would love to exchange family information with you. I've located our "Mississippi cousins"--family of Alexander, brother of my ggfather, Henry S. Goad--and would love to know more about the other Alexander/Henry siblings. Rosanne (Goad) Vrugtman St. Louis, MO xun@sbcglobal.net
That's what I have, as well. The questionable part is Richard Goad (Goode) as Abraham's father. My research shows that there were at least four individuals named Richard Goode/Goad, from Whitstone (Whitley/Whitby estate) in Cornwall, England. According to the timeline, if Richard is Abraham Goad's father then it would have been Richard Goode/Goad IV. I personally believe this is so, but the "facts" are not confirmed by documents anywhere, as far as I can tell. Rosanne
I have been trying to locate the ancestor(s) of my paternal great grandmother for some time now. She is listed in an Agee book as "Miss Baird". However the death certificate of her son (my grandfather) Horace Greeley Agee lists her as Sally JONES The information that I have been able to find is that her mother's second husband may have been a Baird and she therefore adopted that name. She also may have been the daughter of Mary Talley and Simeon Jones. I have not been able to verify her lineage. My great grand mother was married to Jesse W. Agee. They are both buried in the Agee cemetery on Pigg Branch. She was born 18 July 1835 and died 7 January 1906. There were 6 children Mary Elizabeth Agee b about 1857, Horace Greeley Agee b 30 Dec, 1858 d 13 April 1917. Robert Lee Agee B abt 1865 Lucinda Agee b. 9 April 1867 d. 8Sept. 1921 Sarah Amanda Agee b 20 July 1869 d 12 Dec 1904 Docia Green Agee B 22 Sept 1870 d.23 Aug 1891. My grandfather Horace Greeley Agee was the minister of the Hickman Springs Primitive Baptist Church Any help would be appreciated

Hello to Kemp Seekers- In response to the post regarding E.M. Kemp and D.T. Glover: D.T. Glover that married E. M. Kemp is Darius Tennessee "Tennie" Glover, the sister of my great-grandmother, Mary Louvenia "Molly" Glover. Family Bible records show that Tennie married Murph Kemp. She was born April 7, 1855 and died August 11, 1885. Family record also indicates that Tennie and Murph had no children. After Tennie's death, I have found no further record of Murph. My GGG grandmother was Tabitha Goad. She was married to Enoch Carter in 1868 and together they had at least four children: Alfred Remus, Thomas David, Doctor Fink and Lassi Elina. Can anyone tell me if this is the same Tabitha Goad that is being discussed as being the daughter of Abraham Goad and Permillia Cundiff? Thanks. Marc Wood Hermitage, TN -----Original Message----- From: Rosanne Vrugtman [mailto:xun@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Friday, October 21, 2005 9:54 PM To: TNSMITH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNSMITH] Goad-Kemp Connections My maiden name was GOAD and I'm interested in connections (marriage or otherwise) between the Goad and Kemp families in/around Smith County, Tennessee, in the early 1800's (before 1840). My gggfather was Abraham Goad, born 1785 in Bedford, County, VA. (Father: William GOAD. Mother: Tabitha Dixon.) Abraham was married at least twice and I have seen the following information for his two families: WIFE: Anne Cunningham Family 1: 1. William R. GOAD 2. Emily GOAD 3. +Alexander A. GOAD? WIFE: Permelia (Milly) Cundiff (m. 1/1/1808, Bedford County, VA) Family 2: 1. Jane Gincy GOAD? 2. +Mary A. Elizabeth (Lizzie) GOAD 3. +Tabitha GOAD 4. +Thomas Dixon GOAD 5. +Henry S. GOAD NOTE: There is some uncertainty about Jane Gincy Goad, including whether there really was a Jane Gincy Goad and whether she was actually a member of Family 2. I have also been informed that Alexander A. is NOT from Family 1 but was actually the oldest of the five siblings from Family 2. (This information comes from Alexander A. Goad's descendants, now living in/around Batesville, MS, where Alexander apparently settled with another Goad brother as a young adult.) My ggfather was the youngest of the five children, Henry S. (Samson?) Goad, born in 1840 according to some records, though his tombstone reads 1842-1924. Henry's mother died when he was 2 years old, and his father, the widower Abraham, apparently left him in the care of an area family (possibly the Knights or the Lankfords?)--who may or may not have been related in some way. Henry apparently left for Missouri when he was around 14 years old with a somewhat older individual, a Mr. E. Kemp. They came to settle in and around Madison and Wayne County, Missouri, where many members of our family still reside. Eventually, Henry became a gentleman farmer (mule breeder), and a highly respected member of his community, particularly noted for "peacemaking" ability. The Alexander and Henry Goad lines had lost track of each other in the mid-1800's. Last year, I posted an inquiry on an online forum and was contacted by one of Alexander's descendants in Mississippi. My brother and sister-in-law and I attended the Alexander Goad Family reunion in Batesville, MS, last July-which was the first time the two branches of the family had been in the same room together for more than 150 years! Many Goads--including Henry and his third wife, Rachel E. (Smith) Goad--and extended family members are buried in Beulah Cemetery (Des Arc, MO), as well as other area graveyards. A number of Kemps are also buried at Beulah, the oldest being Carolina Kemp (1849-1939). Henry and Rachel's youngest child, Claude Clay Goad (1896-1990) was my gfather. His son, Gordon Leigh Goad, born in Detroit in 1926 and currently residing in St. Louis, MO, is my father. We have never known the real connection between Henry and Mr. E. Kemp though the tradition in the family is that they were half-brothers. This would seem unlikely, unless there was an illegitimate birth involved (possible) or one of Abraham's wives had been married before and had (older) children (also possible). Can anyone assist me with solving this mystery? Also, if anyone is interested, I have collected volumes of information about the Goad family, which I will be happy to share or exchange. Dear Melissa, Could you please look up the Birth & Death Certificates of two of my aunts: Adi Gregg b. 27 Dec 1922 d. 23 Feb 1923 Margaret Louise Gregg b. 7 Aug 1924 d. 1932 both are daughters of Littie Berry Gregg and Louise Ball Gregg and I believe they lived in Marshall County TN at the time. Margaret died in a school accident on the playground. Thank you so much. Vicki LaTurner Gwendolyn Melton <pengwen1@charter.net> wrote: Thanks Melissa! I should have thought of that myself. I wrote to the person who sent the 1914 picture of Hickman School. Maybe she will have other family names for me. Thank you again for sending the copy of Arthur's death certificate. It helps to solve some family mysteries. Being a teacher of 10 & 11 year olds, I was very touched to see Arthur's occupation as "school boy". Hi Joyce, I am doing research on my grandfather who's name is George Washington Hughes. His second wife was Evaline Owen. We notice her first name was spelled different on the records that we have. She was born 9-14-1871 In Rome Tennessee which is in Smith County Tennessee she died in 1950. She had a brother name John Owen he lived in Owensboro, Ky. Her father name was Jesse Owen and her mother name Nancy Fedrick. I don't know if there is any connection or not. Thanks, Freddie
