    3. Carol: I looked in the 1870 Smith County TN census and could not find Kate and the rest of her Smith family. The census only listed race and she and her family were listed as B for black. If it has come down through the family that she was native American, she probably was. I found my families war records through the LDS Family History Center - great place to look. 1870 Smith County TN census BALLARD, Jacob 51 Farmer born TN Hanna 50 Housekeeper born GA Emily 22 Weaver born TN Joseph 20 Farmhand born TN Wade 18 Farmhand born TN Mariah 15 at home born TN Is your Dad still alive and if so how old is he now? 1. A Brief Kemp Tutorial - the Smith Co., TN, Line to John Hailey Kemp

    3. Henry B. Kemp (1731/1736 – February 15, 1819<) married Dinah (? - ?). He was born in Queen Annes Co., MD (?) / Orange Co., NC (?), and migrated with his father Richard to Johnston Co., NC. After Wake County was created from Johnston, Cumberland and Orange Counties, Henry, about 1804 - 1806, migrated from Wake Co., NC, to Wilson Co., TN, and then later to the Defeated Creek area of Smith Co., TN. Some sources have the migration beginning from Granville Co., NC, which was just north of Wake Co., NC. He died in Smith Co., TN. His children were: Rebecca Kemp (~1755 - ~1833) was born in Caswell Co., NC and died in Wilson Co., TN. On 20 Jun. 1781, she married Roger Reece Jr. (1751 -1798) in Wake Co., NC; they had 4 children. Roger and Sarah Reece (Richard Kemp’s wife) were likely siblings. On 4 Nov. 1799, Rebecca married Fielding Neal in Granville Co., NC, marriage bond #5302. (This is the same day that her brother Richard Kemp married Sarah Reece!) Murphy Kemp (21 Mar. 1770 – 1851/1860) was born in Granville Co., NC and married Sarah See (22 Apr. 1775 - ?). They had four sons and five daughters. See below. Burrell P. Kemp Sr. (~1771 – 1 Sep. 1827) was born in NC/VA and married Nancy Foster/Fauster/Fouster (1765/1775 – 1835) on 15 Dec. 1791, in Wake Co., NC. He died in Cainsville, Wilson Co., TN. They had four sons and five daughters. Richard Kemp (1774 – 1850<) was born in NC, was literate and married Barbara (Sarah) Reece (~1760 - ~1833) on 4 November 1799 in Granville Co., NC, marriage bond 5303. Roger (Rebecca Kemp’s husband) and Sarah Reece were siblings. Solomon Kemp (1782 – 1861/1869), born in Wake Co., NC, married twice, first to Judah (Juda) Lankford (~1784 - ?), daughter of William Lankford and Amanda Stone, on 7 Feb. 1801 in Granville Co, NC, then to Hannah (1788 - ?), also from NC. Solomon and Judah had 4 sons and 5 daughters. Henry B. Kemp and his four sons were the progenitors of the Smith County, TN, Kemps. To descend to John Hailey Kemp, we follow the line of Murphy Kemp. Murphy Kemp (21 March 1770 – 1851/1860). Born in Granville Co., NC, and married Sarah/Sally See/Baird (22 Apr. 1775 - ?) ; died in Smith Co., TN. They had nine children, one of whom was: Jinks/Jenks/Jenkins Kemp (27 Jan. 1792 – 27 Aug. 1840), died in Smith Co., TN, married Lucretia (Lucrecy) Hickerson (possibly Harper) (~1794/1804 – 9 Apr. 1844), daughter of Capt. John and Martha (Patsy) Loving Hickerson, born and died in Smith Co., TN, 29 Mar. 1812. (NB – Lucretia could be a daughter of her mother’s second husband, Matthew Harper, who died in Smith Co., TN, in 1807.) They had 13 children, one of whom was: Wade M. Kemp (~1833 – 22 Feb. 1877) married Minerva Celia Brockett (3 Mar. 1836 – 3 Mar. 1859), daughter of Elisha and Celia Young Brockett, 9 Oct. 1856, then married Margaret Octavia (Octavia) Thomas (~1833 - ?), daughter of William and Nancy Young Thomas, 19 Nov. 1863. Minerva was a sister to Merlin/Marlin Luther Brockett, husband of Tabitha F. Kemp and to Cyrus Jackson Brockett and to Benjamin Franklin Brockett. Margaret was sister to Eleanor (Ellen) Thomas, wife of James S. Kemp and had another sister Elizabeth. Wade and Minerva had a daughter. Wade and Octavia had four children, one of whom was: John Hailey (Hailey) Kemp (3 July 1868 – 19 Mar. 1935) married Maggie Leota Canady/Kennedy (4 Jan. 1881 – 7 May 1966), daughter of Taut and Martha Russell Canady/Kennedy, 23 Dec. 1900. [NOTE: The SSDI lists Maggie’s DoD as 15 May 1966.] Hailey and Maggie were born, married and died in Smith Co., TN. They had four sons and three daughters. I would be pleased to share the Kemp data that I have, try to field Kemp questions, and welcome comments, critiques, corrections, additions re the preceding or any of my genealogical data. I have William Goad's parents as John Goad, Sr. and Katherine (surname unknown to me). John Goad, Sr.'s parents as Abraham and Katherine Williams Goad. Peggy, Katherine's name was "Jennings".....as per info I found on Ancestry.com. It's not proven, nor do I know who her parents were?? I was a "Jennings" before marriage and have a book on the "Jennings", but did not find a "Goad" in the book?? I will research the "Catherine/Katherine's" and see if I can come up with an answer for you. Sue Sue Gregory, 706 Scarlett Place Lebanon, TN, 37087-3263
