    3. William, I would be interested in the add of that list too, not that I ever will unsubscribe to the best one...TnSmith! This is disheartening to those who worked so very hard and still are in enabling us to chat and connect to one another. Thanks Melba -------Original Message------- From: williamreidenbaugh@comcast.net Date: 10/29/05 12:07:08 To: TNSMITH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNSMITH] Re: Chatter/Subjects Just a thought. I belong to another list that is quite active and at times, they are corresponding by email regarding topics not directly related to family research. One of the things they do is to make the subject line read, "Off Topic". That way all you have to do is delete it without reading it. 3. I really don't mind what emails people send to the list, but I would LOVE it if they would change the subject to fit their message, and not use the same subject over and over again. Then I could look at the subject, decide if it interests me, and delete or read as appropriate. This is a good list, and I have enjoyed it. Sandra

    2. In a message dated 10/28/05 2:59:46 P.M. Central Daylight Time, graciepmarvel@bellsouth.net writes: That's strange that members of the same family would spell it differently. Sometimes families had "Differences of opinions" over issues and moved and spelled their name different on purpose JUST to make people think they WEREN'T connected. Other times it was the difference in educated or not educated, could or could not read either on the part of the family itself OR of the Census taker. Families may not have had the SAME Census taker and one spelled it one way and one the other....Lots of reasons. Sue Sue Gregory, 706 Scarlett Place Lebanon, TN, 37087-3263

    3. Not strange at all.....when families first came to America, for example if they were German speaking, the name had to be turned into an English version. Thus my Thuny became either Turney or Dorney - same family. Just how it ended up in English. Bauerman became Bowman, Swartz became Black and so on. also my Hoggard line - half of them go by Haggard or Hogarth......same family. I think it was Scottish or something and trying to spell it in English gave the various spellings. Before the Civil War one brother would go by Hoggard, the other by Haggard..... I have several of my names like that....Also name of Looney, some changed it to Lune or Luna. Around the 1830s - 1840 several Irish began to arrive in the north - and the Tiernney, Torny, etc. spelling in short time became Turney. Now that is a different group from the original German speaking Turney.....but they often ended up in the same town.
