If I have offended anyone with my eamail about the Rootsweb/Ancestry.com changes I appolize, however my cousin in NC is very concerned and moving her NCGENWEB pages and her MSGENWEB pages from roots. She want to perseve the free inforamtion. I have the Hughes/Thomas Connections going from Smith/Jackson Co. Tn starting in early 1800 with the Sircy/Thomas Marriage to the Thomas/Hughes/Climer/Sircy/Ramsey lines in Logan Co., KY Just about got those lines completed and will be mailing them to Smith Co Mr Gregory to see if he wishes to post the information. I have lots of documentation on the lines to go with my family history. Charlie, You can moderate me and/or remove me from this list, but I don't think the heavy handed shutting down of a discussion of valid concern is appropriate. The current Rootsweb AUP states that anything posted on rootsweb become property of TGN to be posted on any of their subsidiaries. That means ALL the free information posted on the Smith Co website can be absorbed and incorporated into ancestry's paid subscription site. And if you are willing for that to happen then you are not protecting the rights of those that have contributed to Smith County. I am formally and officially requesting that any and all information I have posted to the Smith County site be removed ASAP. Sharon Tabor In a message dated 3/15/2008 6:46:23 P.M. Rootsweb is being moved to Ancestry.com and a lot of the states are moving their information to other places. NCGENWEB has and is being moved to a free site. the whole state will no longer be connected to rootsweb. Rootsweb is going to be charging within the next year for mailing list and all. http://bigfile.rootsweb.com:80/newsroom/?p=111 March 13th, 2008 by Tim As you know, The Generations Network has hosted and funded the RootsWeb online community since June 2000, thereby maintaining RootsWeb as the world's oldest and largest free genealogy website. TGN remains committed to this mission and believes that RootsWeb is an absolutely invaluable and complementary resource to Ancestry.com, our flagship commercial family history site. We believe in both services and want to see both communities prosper and grow. As part of this goal, we have decided to "transplant" RootsWeb onto the Ancestry.com domain beginning next week. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. What will be different is that the Web address for all RootsWeb pages will change from www.rootsweb.com to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com. Again, the RootsWeb experience is not changing. The decision to host RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is being made for one primary reason: we believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa. Today, despite the fact that Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com are the two most frequently visited family history sites on the Web, only 25 percent of visitors to Ancestry.com visited RootsWeb in January 2008, while only 20 percent of visitors to RootsWeb visited Ancestry.com (according to Comscore Media Metrix). We think we will serve our users best by doing a better job of letting them know what is available on both Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to advance this goal. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com will also make it easier for us to make changes and improvements to the RootsWeb experience in the future. All old RootsWeb URLs will continue to work, whether they are bookmarks or favorites, links to or from a hosted page or URLs manually typed in your Internet browser. We will have a redirect in place so that all old URLs will automatically end up on the appropriate new RootsWeb URL. You will never need to update your old favorites or links unless you want to. We have worked to make the transition as seamless as possible for our users, and this change should have a minimal impact on your experience with the site. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to [email protected] Thanks, Tim Sullivan CEO The Generations Network, Inc. Smith County Historical & Genealogical Society will be hosting author and musician John Bridges at the March 17, 2008 meeting. Bridges has authored previous novels based on lives and experience in the Civil War era, the newest (and fourth book) follows in the same format as it follows the lives of Thomas Benton Smith, DeWitt S. Jobe and Dee Smith. Thus Three Cousins from Mechanicsville is based on their experiences through the “Uncivil War” and its aftermath. Come celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with us in the lower level of Smith County Public Library at 7:00 pm on March 17th. Guest are welcome and refreshments will be served. **************It's Tax Time! John Stevens bought and sold a lot of land in Smith CO. in and around Carthage. There was also James Stevens. Going thru the Smith CO census, I believe John died between 1870 and 1880. I last found him in the 1870 Smith CO , New Middleton census living in house 176, John Stevens age 74 b. I went to Ancestry.com and found that in 2002 Anne at [email protected] had information on your John Stevens. She states that John was born 1795 in Caroline CO VA he died after 1850 while living in Smith CO TN( we know he lived at least to 1870 in Smith Co TN) She gave his wife as Almenia b 1818 KY. The census for 1860 her name was spelled Elinamia( I think this is poor spelling on the census takers part or he wrote it like it sounded) because on the 1850 her name is spelled Almenia. Anne gives the children of John as Mildred b. abt 1840, Aquilla abt 1844, Penelope abt 1846, Jonathan abt 1847( could be Aquilla J. on the 1860 census), Martha abt 1849.
