When I visited Carthage for the same reason a couple of years ago, I spent a lot of time in the research room at the Carthage Library. Should find a copy of the "Smith County History" book there. Also visited the Smith County Museum and attended the Smith County Historical Society meeting. John and Retta have done such a good job with the cemeteries that I was also able to find all of the family burial spots--even those that were isolated and unmarked. Stayed at a nearly hotel. Lots of choices. I'm sure Smith County residents can give you more specifics, though. Hi Pamela! Well, I looked up all 3 of those surnames and don't have any of them, unfortunately. Good to "see" you, though! I guess my big Smith Co. names are Manning, Taylor, Beal, Highers, Haynes, Hill, Glasgow, and Miller. Especially looking for Joseph Glasgow "Jodie" Beal. This is my husband's side, and Jodie was his great-grandpa who disappeared in about 1935 or so. I'm wondering, among the Harville people in here, does anyone have a photo of James Turner Harville and his wife Fannie (Massey) Harville? I don't know what they look like. They are my great grandparents and technically I did see Fannie at my father's funeral. But I was only six at the time and don't remember her. Linda

A suggestion for finding family through visits to cemeteries: A distant Goad cousin recently took a tour of cemeteries in several states where known family members were interred. When she found a family grave, she left a silk rose and her business card. On the back of the card, she indicated her relationship to a family patriarch, and invited others related to the family to contact her. She had no idea whether this would yield any results or not, but she has since been contacted by several members of her extended family who have helped her to locate other living family and fill in some of the remaining blanks on her family tree. I thought this was a great idea for others who are searching for extended family but have hit the proverbial brick wall. I haven't been on the TNSMITH list for awhile. I'm descended from two old Smith Co families, the patriarchs being Barnet Philander Lee and William Patterson Jr. (the one whose son was Felix Patterson). Those are on my mother's side, but I've recently been led to believe my father's Arnold family also lived in Smith Co for a time. The Joseph Arnold who lived on Goose Creek (now in Trousdale Co) from the 1820s to the 1840s may have been my 2nd gr-grandfather. I've seen some census records, and indexes to land transactions and TN land grants (Bk6 #4529 1826, Bk6 #4687 1826, Bk12 #9734 1830, Bk18 #15080 1838). Joseph may be the same one who lived in Tyrell Co, NC before Smith, and his son James Arnold, also of Smith, may be the same one who lived in Henry Co, TN from the 1840s to the 1850s. I'm wondering if someone who has access to wills or grant books can do a lookup for me and give me some more clues. Or maybe someone else is related to Joseph's family? Always nice to hear from Lee, Anderson, DeRossett & Patterson descendents too! Jim
