Charlie gave me ok to add this infor. Online records lds.org has a orange-like square at right of where would normally add a name to research. You can access names. It gives census records, (up thru 1900 as I see so far) you can actually see the images and then can go backward or forward to the next pages. I put in only a surname and it gave me over 300 pgs to search. All is FREE. Thought it would be helpful to some. Please do not reply via this site. If you need help, etc. please email me privately so we do not tie up the site. Thanks. Melba

I am looking for more information on the Willis family in Smith County, TN. In the census below I think Leonadas is actually Lon Willis b. March 9, 1876; d.(not known) who married Tilda Coons b. April 12, 1880; d. Jan. 1, 1954 She was the daughter of William and Sarah E. Coons. I would really like to know if the Leonadas below is Lon or not. The age is about right and Lon's mother name was Nancy Willis. The story that has been passed down about Lon's mother Nancy is she had all these kids out of wed-lock with a Beasley Man that lived down the road from her. Not for sure if it's true and if I have found the right family or not. In the 1900 census of Smith County, TN Lon and Tilda are married already. Tilda is leaving with her parents and siblings but Lon is nowhere to be found. (Where did he go??) In the 1910 census of Smith County, TN Lon and Tilda are leaving in District 3 together with children: Janie Willis, Nervie Willis, and Edgar Willis. Any help on this family would be great!! Home in 1880: District 6, Smith, Tennessee Sherd or Sherwood Willis 69 (Head of house hold) Annie Willis 66 -wife Nancy Willis 28 -daughter Mary A. Samuel and Frances Black are my ancestors through their daughter Emily. I'm sorry I do not have a maiden name for Martha. There is a great deal I don't know about some of Samuel and Frances' children. I thought John may have died in Kentucky since his youngest daughter Rosella was born there about 1848. I will send my entire file on this family (and ancestors) to your email address. I know they lived near where the Caney Fork River flows into the Cumberland in 1850. By 1860, only their daughter-in-law and her children were living there. Her name was Martha D. Black, and I'm trying to learn her maiden name. Her husband, John, ran ferry boats on a river, which was first identified as the Mississippi, then the Tennessee, but I believe was the Cumberland. He died around 1848 on one of his boats. She was a weaver, and her daughter Permelia Vannie married Hugh Garrett, son of William Archer Garrett. This also may be a second marriage for Frances and she may have been a widow Kirby? Was she possibly a DELONE married to a Kirby first? I think Melaney is saying that in the 1850 census Martha 28 b. VA is widow of a John Black who died in 1848? John being the son of Samuel Black? and these children Pomelia, Rosella & Francis were children of John Black & Martha Unknown? Is that correct? I found one small bit of information in my Chancery minutes book for Smith Co. which makes no sense to me. James C. Saunders and B. B. Uhles versus Elizabeth Folkes and Thomas J. Black. The defendent, Thomas J. Black is entitled to an interest in remainder (subject to the life estate of his mother, the said Elizabeth Folks) of one seventh of the slaves mentioned in the bill viz. Manning, Jim, Peter, Martha, Lucy and Mary and their increase. 14 Feb 1848. Reading this, is it possible maybe that Samuel Black's first wife was an Elizabeth Folkes who perhaps died before Feb 1848 and Thomas is trying to collect on his mothers inheritance? All this is just speculation on my part. I also found that Hugh B. Garrett and Permelia Vannie Black and children are in Clay Co. Texas census in 1880. Also living with them is R. E. June, the best that "I" can tell, Nancy Gillihan was most likely a second wife to Cane Climer. The 1850 Census was taken in October; plenty of time for them to marry prior to it's taking. The records show that they married in 1850, so no way she could be natural mother to John C and Sarah E as they were 18 & 16. U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 about Nancy Gillihan Name: Nancy Gillihan Gender: female Birth Place: SC Birth Year: 1801 Spouse Name: Cane Climer Marriage Year: 1850 [I think she may have been a second wife?] Marriage State: TN Number Pages: 1 Source Citation: Source number: 106.000; Source type: Electronic Database; Number of Pages: 1; Submitter Code: VCM. They prob had not been married long when the 1850 Census was taken...Spring, Summer or Fall wedding could have happened before October?? Just my "guess"... I really think this is a good lead. Thank you so much. I have looked at this many times but never connected it. I guess sometimes it takes an outside memeber of family to get it for us sometimes. or I have just looked so much I have blinders on. I am cooking homemade stew right now. Got fresh carrotts, potatoes and Onions in it. Going to put tomatoe juice in it and some thicken for a good gravvey Hey drive over and have lunch. Wish you lived close enought to do so. Jeannie PS I am going to take mother south next week back where she and dad met and got married. She will be 89 in October and I am going to try and make it nice for her, she has dementure cant speel good. and down there she does not get depressed like she does here.
