Canada, a well known and highly respected Baptist preacher, $6 to tutor Emily B. Williamson." Page 210 Picture of Miss Holden's Seminary. Walter Canada is one of the students pictured. Page 218 Taken from information on the formation of the Baptist Church. Shiloh Baptist was the forerunner to the First Baptist Church in Collierville. "In 1853, J.B. Canada, a noted minister, served Shiloh's membership of fourty-four, thirty-one whites and thirteen blacks. Messengers to the Big Hatchie were E. Bray, F.M. Robinson, and W. Cargill. J.B. Canada represented both Shiloh and Collierville. Many of the delegate's names are found in the early Shelby County records." "In 1856 only Canada and Robinson attended the meeting. The church maintained a memebership of thirty-six, twenty-four whites and fourteen blacks." "It is apparent that there was a change of the church's location by 1857. The same messengers represented both the Shiloh and Collierville churches. They were J.B. Canada, W.H. Allen, and J.C. Griffin. However, two ministers listed were J.B. Canada for Shiloh and J.L. Cross for Collierville." Page 219 "Messengers to the 1858 Big Hatchie at Ellon Baptist Church in Lauderdale County were J.B. Canada, W.H. Allen, and W.F. Allen." "Messengers in 1859 were J.B. Canada, W. Cargill, and William Armour. The 1860 minutes show that J.B. Canada, and J.A. Jay attended the Association's meeting held at Beaver Creek Baptist Church in Fayette County." "In 1865 J.B. Canada was messenger to the Big Hatchie meeting and listed the membership as thirty-nine. In 1866 Collierville failed to send a representative or a report, but by 1867 the congregation of seventy-nine had moved back to Shiloh. There were thirty-eight memberships by baptism and twenty-one received by letter. Messengers to the Big Hatchie meeting were E.B. Lewis, T.H. Cargill, and J.B. Canada. The 1868 memebership was seventy-two, and Joseph H. Borum voted by proxy. The membership declined in 1869 to fifty-four with ten dismissals. The delegates that year were J.B. Canada, N.P. Moore, and T.H. Cargill. In 1870 J.B. Canada, N.P. Moore, and T.H. Cargill represented Shiloh, and in 1871 D. Dodson servd as messenger with J. Bateman as minister." "When the church reorganized at Collierville, those listed as charter members were Mr & Mrs. Dillingham Dodson, Mrs. Sarah Blocker Rowlett, Mr. & Mrs. Ira D. Reed, Rev. J.B. Canada, Capt. Patrick H. Strickland, Mrs. Mary Henry Smith, Mrs. Anna Hughes, and Mrs. A.M. Morton." Page 220 "In 1877 and 1878, the church was represented at the Association's meeting by Rev. T.P. Manning, J.B. Canada, W. Truss, T.E. Atwood, and J.T. Reed. Church membership in 1878 was forty-nine, and in 1879 was fifty-nine." Page 225 A listing of ministers who served the Baptist Church: J.B. Canada 1853 J.B. Eppy White had donated two acres for a church, and because of the generous gift, the church was named "Eudora" meaning "a gift" in Greek. He strived for them to receive a good education and to have the necessities for a comfortable home. At the time of his death, Rev. Canada had accumulated approximated 525 acres in Fayette and Shelby Counties. He died April 24, 1887, and his will was filed on June 17, 1887 (Will Book #10).
