My connection to Shelby County is tenuous, but I'm trying to use it to locate some information and break through a brick wall. My grandparents were married in Shelby County in April 16, 1938: James Brown CLEMENTS [27 Feb1861 in Tipton Co, TN - 4 Nov 1888] Sarah Elizabeth (Sally) KNOX [12 January 1864 in Florence, AL?? - 22 Mar 1958 in Marbury, AL) I would like to figure out what were they doing in Shelby County. I don't know if a marriage license is available -- I live in rural northern Nevada, and we have few genealogical resources available here. I don't think Shelby County can help me with this, but I have been unable to trace my grandmother's line past her parents: Robert McComb KNOX [July 1826 NC - aft. 1910 prob. Tipton Co, TN] who married, bet. 1850-52 in AL, to Martha Jane ? (perhaps BROOKS) [abt. 1832 in Montgomery AL - 1864/68] I know only that Robert's parents were born in NC, and I'm not even sure of Martha Jane's last name. (The name Brooks came from another researcher. The Martha whose last name was Brooks may have been married to another Robert Knox, who lived in Montgomery, AL, rather than my great grandfather).
