Hi All! I grew up in Memphis, and am researching so many names in Shelby County. Here goes: RICHTER, PALM: My grandfather, Otto F. Richter immigrated to Memphis from Germany about 1885 - as a teenager. He lived with the family of Gustavus Adolphus Palm, a Civil War veteran who was also from Otto's village in Germany. Which village? I wish I knew! After earning his living as an artist, ill health forced him to stop painting murals, and he had a saloon on Adams St. VANDERCAMMEN, TIELENS, COLLOMP, RODET, ETTIENNE: Otto Richter married an immigrant from Belgium, Louise Vandercammen. Louise's family immigrated to Memphis about 1890. Her sister Elise married Fred Tielens; sister Julia married Pascal Collomp, sister Marie married ______ Rodet , and their widowed mother, Leocadie married Charles Ettienne. There were also three brothers: Jimmy, Antoine and Rafael. DAVIS, ASHLEY, GARRETT, PICKERING: My ggrandfather was John Howell Davis. He came to Memphis from Indiana sometime in the 1850s to build a contracting business, buying land in Shelby Co. on what was the Old Randolph Road, now north Seventh St. Conscripted to fight at Shiloh, he returned home to die in 1864. His wife, Sarah, remained on Seventh St. raising their family. Daughter Emma married Joe Pickering (I think he worked for a railroad - His brother Al Pickering worked for the L&N. Al married a cousin of the Davis family, Ethyl Davis from Evansville, IN). Daughter Sarah married Will Garrett. Daughter Anne married William Ashley. Son, John Houston Davis, my grandfather, was an engineer on the Frisco Railroad. He died in 1925. RICHARDSON, OWEN, DALTON, WEDDLE. STURM: My ggrandmother, Mary Emma Richardson, came to Memphis from Brownsville, TN about 1883. Widowed, she brought her children and a sister, Milred (Minnie) Owen who married ______ Dalton, and her brother, Lyne Owen. Mary Emma earned a living running a boarding house. Her daughter Ida married John Weddle, a railroad conductor. Dorothy Sturm, who was a noted Memphis artist, was their granddaughter. Her son, Malcom Richardson, owned several grocery stores in Memphis around the turn of the century. His children were daughters, Emma (married Albert Gross), Elizabeth (an RN in Memphis), Malcom Jr. and Jack Richardson. Mary Emma's daughter, Cora, was my grandmother. She married John Davis, and they lived on Seventh St. where I grew up as part of a third generation living in my grandfather's house. I know a lot about these ancestors, but there's always questions needing answers. Genealogy is such a great addiction! Best wishes, Cora Davis McDonnell
