*Sorry for double post, left out pertinet info A. or G. CARTER. I believe he may have been born in the Dyer/Gibson Co area, but need to clarify that. His father was LeRoy Green Carter, he had siblings named John, James Monroe, Dora Selena Carter Eudaly, Sarah Carter Craig and Emma North. He lived in Memphis TN and was still writing family letters in 1957, at the age of 91. I would really love to know more of this gentleman, Who his wife and children were, where he was born and where he went to church, and was buried, the last two, most likely Memphis. Any help would be appreciated. Gena Lally Memphis Tn
I am hoping to find someone with knowledge of my Great Uncle Lee A. or G. Carter. He was a lovely man and a few of his old letters have been given to me. He was born about 1866, probably in the Dyer or Gibson County area. He was the son of LeRoy Green Carter. His siblings were John Carter, James Monroe Carter, Dora Selena Carter Eudaly, Emma Carter North and Sarah Carter Craig. He was a gentleman, I wish I had known him. He wrote lovely family letters as late as 1957 at age 91. I would love to know more of him, where exactly he was born, who his wife and children (1 daughter Martha (Mattie) Cora Carter) were, where he went to church and where he is buried. I would be most grateful for any information about him. Thank You. Regena Lally

Please, Please read this. My great grandfather, John Scott Lynn, is buried in a very small cemetery west of Brunswick on the Old Brownsville Road near Ellendale. I visited this grave site 25 years ago and it had a modern stone for John Scott Lynn and was enclosed with a chain link fence among a few trees (pine as I recall). My grandfather, Joseph Lynn, son of John Scott Lynn place a new stone marker there around 1960 and had the fence built to protect the site. Three weeks ago I went to Shelby County to visit the grave site again. To my dismay I could not fine the grave site. I am afraid that developers in the area have destroyed this grave site, but I am not sure. The appearance of things is much different after 25 years. The grave site was located on the north side and back from the Old Brownville Road about 50 yards, as I remember, and a few yard south of a remnant of an old roadbed which was a part of sharp curve in the Old Brownsville Road many years ago. I remember a relative new sweeping curve in the road at the site with the grave site between the new road and the old roadbed. Can anyone tell me if there is a record in Shelby County of grave sites such as this? Would the destruction or removal of a grave site be recorded or approved by some authority? If so, who would it be? I feel that I must find the grave or find out what has happened to it for the sake of all his descendants, none which currently live in Shelby County. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. If anyone has access to possible records of this small grave site, I would appreciate hearing from them. I am tracking Wrights through KY >into TN and I found a James Bingham Murray born April 21st, 1805, in Edinburgh,Scotland. He married a Mary Strade(r?) October 3rd, 183(4?) in Brandenburg KY by a Rev (T?) L. Helm. The question marks come from not being able to read difficult, handwritten records from a Wright family Bible. There are others mentioned like Mary Murray born August 8th, 1821 in Green County KY, Eliza Ann Murray (a "consant" of JBM) born November 27th, 1814. It says Mary died July 25th, 1841 "Age nineteen years, eleven months, and fourteen days". However, I don't think the "math" is there to support it! Ha! Maybe it is, it's late and I'm just tired! I do not know where JB Murray is buried, I would like to know if you come across any other information. It may be in Somerville, in Fayette County, TN? Please let me know if you have any collateral information that might be useful. I'd be very gratefully for any leads at all. W. Would anyone have any information on James Bingham Murray who was born 1805 in Scotland and married an Eliza Ann Wright about June 16, 1842 in Memphis? Any information on Murray, Wright, Cloyd, Trantham, Bryant would be greatly appreciated. I got this in a daily newsletter and thought I'd pass it along to you guys. Does anyone know what was wrong with a barber shop (#8) back in those days? I think some of these rules wouldn't be so bad to have today! :-) Enjoy! Laurel Crook =========================================== Rules and Regulations for Teachers in 1872 1. Teachers each day will fill lamps, clean chimneys, and trim wicks. 2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and scuttle of coal for the day's sessions. 3. Make your pens carefully: you may whittle nibs to the individual taste of pupils. 4. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly. 5. After 10 hours in school, the teachers spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books. 6. Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed. 7. Each teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society. 8. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or get shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intentions, integrity and honesty. 9. The teacher who performs his labors faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of 25 cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.

Looking for any descendants of Thomas Saint whose descendants lived in Shelby, Decatur, & Perry Counties in TN in early 1800's. Believe sons to be Benjamin & Exum who were with a Thomas Saint in Perquimans Co., NC and were Quakers. In 1794 Exum and Banjamin were disowned or dismissed from the Society of Friends in NC. A Thomas, Benjamin, Exum and Isham show up in 1800 in census of Anson Co., NC. By 1820 Benjamin and Isham are in Perry Co., TN. Any info or contact would be appreciated. Thanks, Glenda
Hello, Would anyone be so kind as to help me try to find some info on Mildred P. Perry from Memphis, Shelby Co. TN. I have hit a brick wall. Does anyone have access to any city directory from 1925 thru 1950? I am desperately trying to find her parents or any family connection. She is my husbands birth mother. She was born March 25, 1925 in Memphis, but they can't seem to find a birth record. We think she had at least one sister. She was married to Charles R. Brooks in 1946 for 3 years and had one son before they divorced. My husband lost all contact with her and then found out she died in July of 1973. I don't know the exact day of the month and she had remarried a man called "Shorty" Kincade or Kincaid. They have not been able to find a death record either. If anyone can find an obituary, (probably in the Commercial Appeal) we would be more than happy to reimburse any fees or costs occurred or associated. Any and all information would be helpful, please contact me if you know anyone that might be able to do this for me. Thank you in advance. Anita Brooks akb4friend@aol.com
Hi! I have been searching for my lost ancestor, Dunstan B. O'Bannion. I have been unable to find him since the 1840 Marshall Co., MS census. As a last resort, I began to look for him in surrounding counties which led me to Shelby Co., TN. I found a marriage for D. B. O'Bannian and Mrs. Mary Ann Grammar 18 Jul 1852. Also, there is a J. B. OBanion in the 1850 Shelby Co. TN census. This may be my lost ancestor, but I am hesitant to accept this without more conclusive proof. I have searched all Shelby Co TN records in my library. They only have census and marriage records. If any Shelby Co., TN researcher has access to additonal resources, I would greatly appreciate it if you could look in your indexes to see if there is any mention of a Dunstan O'Bannion/O'Bannon in the years 1840 and up. If I could find a record showing that first name (since it is unusual) I would be convinced, and a big mystery would be on its way to being solved. Thanks in advance! Sherry Ledlow

(I have checked out a book on the history of Tenn. and thought I'd share the info on Memphis and/or Shelby Co. with the list. Also, the Shelby Co. TNGenWeb county coordinator may use this info on the site. I haven't looked through all of the book so I'm not ready to do lookups if I'm going to do any at all. It doesn't have personal histories other than major historical figures. I'll send Memphis, Shelby Co. info as I come to it. -Laurel Crook, lcrook@fhu.edu) ----------------------------------------------------- >From History of Tennessee by William Robertson Garrett and Albert Virgil Goodpasture; pub. 1900 by Brandon Printing Co., Nashville, Tenn. p. 171-172 MEMPHIS - Shelby County, erected in 1819, was the first county that lay wholly in West Tennessee. The commanding position of the Chickasaw Bluffs, where Memphis now stands, marked it as one of the most important points on the Mississippi River. It was recognized by the French and Spanish, who erected forts there before the earliest settlements in this State. They viewed it from a military standpoint. Afterwards far-seeing men recognized its equally important commercial advantages. In the troublous winter of 1791-92, when General Robertson called for volunteers to act as spies and rangers, John Rice and some other young men left Sevier's Station, on the north side of Red River, near Clarksville, intending to proceed up the Cumberland by boat, and join him at Nashville. Discovering their purpose, a party of Indians under Doublehead, crossing a peninsula made by the river just above Clarksville, lay in wait for them at a place now called Seven Mile Ferry, and as their boat came round a bend, fired a volley into it, which killed John Rice, three sons of Colonel Valentine Sevier, and John Curtis. Rice appears to have been a young man, not only of energy and enterprise, but of sound judgment and foresight. When North Carolina established the land office known as John Armstrong's office, in 1783, which opened all the land in this State to entry, he obtained a grant for 5,000 acres of the best lands on the Chickasaw Bluffs. By his will, this grant was bequeathed to his brother, Elisha Rice, who, in 1794, sold it to John Overton for $55. Overton then conveyed a half interest in the same to his friend, Andrew Jackson. The devoted and uninterrupted friendship through life of these two men is as beautiful as that of Jonathan and David. For politic reasons, Jackson sold his entire interest in the property before it was developed. On this tract the city of Memphis was laid out in 1819.

I've not been able to get to them yet, and tonight got the pathology report from breast reduction surgery I had last week. Not good. Cancer in one breast and abnormal cells in the other. I will most likely have a double mastectomy pretty soon. Please, email me again in several weeks to remind me to do this for y'all. The cancer is specific to certain structures within the breast, and does not metastasize, so I shouldn't need radiation or chemo. Thanks for understanding.
