I have an ancester that went to Cumberland University in TN, back in the early 1800's prior to the Civil War. Does anyone know if it is still there, and/or if they would still have records back that far? BB

can anyone tell me what is the best book dealer in memphis, tenn. that has books on memphis history during civil war period,
Hello fellow researchers, I'm hoping you can shed some light on the marriage of L.H. Pryon to Martha Furguson, Dec 22, 1846 in Shelby County. If anyone has access to an 1840,1850 or 1860 census I'd really appreaciate a look up of the Pryon/Pryan/Prian surname to see if I should order the microfilm. Thanks, Sharon ssmith@mail.cass.net
Happy Holidays to all, Haven't entered my names lately. My family of WHITE's are said to be from Scotland. As yet this is just family rumor? The earliest WHITE in my line that I have documents on is William "Alexander" WHITE, born Va. 1830/31. Alexander's father is William "George" WHITE, born in Scotland. Arrived in America around 182?'s. By 1840, the family is said to be in the area of Memphis Tn. George's occupation was railroad engineer. By 1853, in DeSoto County, Ms. I find the marriage of Alexander WHITE to SArah Adeline JONES. She is the daughter of M.(Milton?) JONES and Lucinda PERRY. They had 12 children, most of who I have, with the exception of two? Here are the children: not in birth order. S.C. female born 1854 Dave born 1856 (located to Ca?) George (located to Tn.) Jesse Jones 1861/68 married Elizabeth KELLY/ANDERSON in 1892 Ellen married James Henry Franklin HENLEY-1892 Mary married unknown CARTER (located to Tx.) Nellie married John FRISBY 1895 Tiny J married W F Covington 1897 Annie married W E HUTCHERSON 1899 James Wesley married Eula Lee HENLEY Other names that tie in with this line are HOLT, POAG from Tn. area. If anyone is searching any of the above names, please contact me. Debbie Bein ICQ#13139983 JeffBein@pell.net
I am interested in obtaining information about Mahaley Jane White who was born Oct 20, 1848 in Lawrence County, TN. She married John W. Hathcoat in Crittenton County, AR on Jan 1, 1865. The family information I have is that she was raised by an Uncle Billy Seay on a farm in Memphis. John was a Civil War veteran on his way home to Harrison, AR when he met and married Mahaley Jane. Mary Jane died on Jan 8, 1932. I would like to receive information about any of these folks. Thanks!
Hello All, Just want to say thanks to everyone that answered and helped with my query about the Shelby Co. death records, etc.. Unfortunately, I did not find my guncle Council Martin listed, but certainly appreciate the help. Happy hunting, and thanks, Lyn
Hi I have been at it again. Surfing and collecting links to add to my collection. These are pretty good genealogy links. Databases of ship passenger lists http://iigs.rootsweb.com/immships/ census databases, Texas research and Civil War research http://www.imagin.net/~tracers For those of you who have palatine ancestors this explains what that is http://genealogy.org:80/~palam/palatine.htm The soundex machine...helps with soundex codes http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/soundex/ I got these from another list I am on. I find the ship passenger's list pretty terrific! Maybe it will help you. Good luck and happy hunting! Sooz

Hello all, I am new to this list and need some help. Right now I am nose-to-nose with a brick wall. My ggrandmother was born in Hardeman Co., TN. Her parents died when she was young and she and her siblings were raised by their maternal grandparents. Having exhausted most every avenue to find the name of my ggrandmother's parents through her, (the 1880 census for Hardeman Co. is mostly illegible) I am now seeking information through her siblings. One of her brothers was Council MARTIN, born between 1880 and 1890. Council lived and died in Memphis. He was married with two daughters. His wife died when the children were still young and he had a woman live in to take care of them (he may have married her). Council was an engineer for the Missouri- Pacific RR. I do not know when he died. Is there a cemetery index for Shelby Co. that someone could do a look-up for me? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and happy hunting, Lyn Magill-Hoch Albuquerque, NM
I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to send me a Happy Birthday greeting. It was very nice you all thought of me. I got some really great birthday gifts, thanks to rootsweb. I have come very close of finding my lost roots. I am so close to my problem lines. If I had not been on these lists, I would never have been able to find them. Appreciate all the help and interest that many of you offer. I try very hard to reciprocate, though, time, many times slows me down. Thank-you one and all. Happy hunting. Sooz

It was a gorgeous fall day here and my trip to Elmwood Cemetery was thoroughly enjoyed! I did not have any luck locating the graves that I was searching for.....most of the stones in that area are gone. But, I did get the info on Jos Emmerich....Burial date 4/2/1882. He is in Section T 624 #1 I did not see Mary E. Emmerich listed, but here are the other Emmerich's.
