I am searching for a Thomas and/or James MORTON who might have moved to Shelby County circa 1830. James was in the 1830 Union county census and then he and his family disappears. Thomas we have absolutely no info on except that he is a brother to my gg-grandfather, David MORTON. He was born in NC and was probably living with a James or Tilda MORTON in 1830. Thanks so much. Nina MORTON T.
Is there anyone besides me that would like the list changed so that replies automatically go back to the list. It sure encourages activity on the list which usually leads to a lot of assistance, info, etc. If this was a very busy list, I'd understand it not being this way but there is very little going on so think it would help. Listowner, would you think about it please???? Glenda
Hi. I am researching the families of Stephen Clement Treadwell, Daniel Chandler Treadwell, Louisa Crenshaw, who seem to have been in Shelby Co in the first half of the 1800s. Daniel was the father, Stephen was the son, and Louisa was Stephen's wife. I actually have an extensive genealogy already. What I'm after is info on land holdings, involvement in slavery, daily life details. Please contact me if you want info on this family or if you have info. Stephen and Louisa were my 3rd greatgrandparents on my mother's side. Janet Nasdor Jones janknj@aol.com
glenda - yes, i think that is a good idea. Linda
My GGgrandfather, JAMES A. COLE, died July 15, 1914 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery with Thompson Bros handling the Burial. Would someone please give me directions to Elmwood Cemetery. Would someone please tell me where I might find the listings for Lot numbers? Or how would I go about getting a lot number. I will be in Memphis in late September 1999. And thank you so very much. Oops....I meant so say the Granade/Grenade family were my ancestors in Shelby Co., Tennessee! It gets confusing at times when you have ancestors from similarly named counties in neighboring states...even if they were from the opposite sides of my family! Pardon the brain damage, yall... Richard Jackson Sam Antonio, TX
Following are some of my ancestors from Shelby Co., KY. The Granades/Grenades were present in the 1850 census of Shelby Co., TN. I am desperately trying to find some sort of marriage record for Mary Etta Granade who married Who married William E. Jackson. It is very likely that they married in Shelby county. There are so many William Jacksons in Western Tennessee at that time (1850) that it is impossible for me to tell which, if any of them are the one I am looking for. I am hoping that someone in Shelby Co. has access to marriage records around that time (1849-1855)that may help me solve a longstanding family mystery. The only other information that I have on William E. Jackson (who is my g-g-grandfather) is that he was born in KY Anyone in Shelby Co., have any ideas??? Richard E. I have just discovered the following new surnames in my family from the Shelby County, TN area. Ayers Birde Brooks Brown Dukes Herrera Muise Perry Reece Warner White Willie Willingham Any help would be appreciated. Anita akb4friend@aol.com
I am researching the Munroe family who lived in Hickory Withe (Shelby County). They settled here from Virginia sometime in te early half of the 19th century. My g-g-grandfather's name was Louis Wellington Munroe. I know he had a brother named David, and his father was also named David. Anyone having information on this family, or genmeral information about Hickory Withe that'd give me a lead would be greatly appreciated. William Boone
I did not find him listed in the 1885 Memphis City Directory, but there were several Carter's listed. Also, a couple of widows. Bobbie Rennie
I am new to this list, so forgive me if I'm asking about something y'all already know about. My great-great-grandfather Ambrose Carter moved to Pontotoc Co., MS in 1860. According to a local history booklet, he and his siblings came from "Wolfe River in Tennessee." The only Wolfe River I've been able to locate on any map is in southern Shelby Co., between Memphis and the state line. Was there a particular settlement along the river that also used the name Wolf River? And does anyone have access to the 1850 census? Ambrose Carter would've been 11 years old then, so he wouldn't be listed as the head of household. :-) Other children that should also be listed are James B., age 18; Mary, age 10; Elizabeth, age 6; and Rachael P., age 5. If they are found on the census, who were their parents? And does anyone have a suggestion as to why, 10 years later, they would be found in a different place without their parents? Thanks for any help! Sharon

I just saw a letter listed on the e-bay auction site I thought might interest someone. It's listed as "1868 Medical Related Letter". It says it's a detailed letter from a union army officer named "Lou" to his wife in Memphis named "Lib" and contains information about their children. IF your family was in Memphis in 1868 and you had a Lou and a Lib as names this could be a find. Just thought someone out there might be able to connect to this family, I wish I could find such a thing on my family!
I got this off another list and thought it was worth passing on. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pines/2318/ Teresa iraggi@tisd.net Victoria, TX Iraggi*Maggio*Marzullo*Burizillari*Ferraro - Palermo,Sicily Smith*Meeks*Moore*Stevens*Medford - TN,MS Leeper*Shannon*McCauley - MS, AR, SC Crawford*Ragon - AR,TN,MS Meyer* Myers* and other spellings - TX & alot more !
