These are great. I didn't know this page existed. Thanks
Dear All, Does anyone here have a copy of the 1850 Census Book for Shelby County? I understand that it's about 828 pages of actual photocopies of the handwritten records ... and it's indexed! Regards, Lex. Lex Johnson Queensland, Australia l.johnson@cqu.edu.au
Yes, I am very interested and will go check them out right now. Keep up the good work. Anita
Hello everyone, I have done some abstracts from Shelby County newspapers. The first group is online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnnews/. If these help anyone please let me know.....I need encouragement to keep reading all these newspapers!
Dear All, I am new to the list and probably should let folks know a little about my research interests in Shelby Co TN. I'm descended from a YORK / YORKE family that lived for a while in Halifax (Nova Scotia). The family moved around quite a lot. My gr-gr-gr-grandparents (John & Elizabeth YORK) moved south to Florida (1845-47), then Tennessee (1850), then Mississippi (1853) and finally back to Shelby Co TN by 1860. I've heard they were living there during the 1860 census. Anyway, my gr-gr-grandfather John YORK(E) packed his bags in 1862 and travelled to Australia. Of course, contact has been totally lost over the years, if it even continued after 1862. It's been a devil of a job trying to find out anything about the family in North America from over here, so I'm keen to hear from anyone over there who can offer any suggestions. The basic "people information" I know goes like this: Father: John YORK, born about 1812 at Halifax, Nova Scotia married ???? died about 1884, Shelby Co, Tennessee Mother: Elizabeth ???? born about 1816, England? died about 1890, Shelby Co, Tennessee Children: John born abt 1840, either Halifax NS or Brooklyn NY Frances born abt 1845 in Florida Sophie born abt 1847 in Florida Frederick born abt 1850 in Tennessee Franklin born abt 1853 in Mississippi William Francis If anyone is interested, I have heaps of information to share about John (b. abt 1840) from the time he arrived in Australia in 1862. I really hope some of this information "rings a bell" with someone on the list. Best wishes to you and your families for the New Year. Lex Johnson Queensland, Australia l.johnson@cqu.edu.au
We have just returned from a Christmas visit to my family in Memphis, TN. Attended church services at a beautiful old church on Third St. and Market St., St. Mary's. In a brochure about the church we learned that a large, German-speaking (only) community in Memphis began to build their church in 1864. To quote the brochure, "In 1852, fearing war and to escape military conscription, many Germans fled the homeland; as many as 1,400 had settled in Memphis. Many spoke little English, and they began working to form a German parish ..." There is a list of names - some of the founders: METTE, HANDWERKER, HERBER, HAAGAS, CRONE, GUNTIS, BRENNER, THOMA/WALTERS, ZIMMERMAN, MONTEVERDE, WALSH, ZANONE, O'CALLAGHAN. My grandfather, Otto Frederick RICHTER, emigrated from Germany to Memphis about 1885. He came as a teen-ager and lived with a family from the same village in Germany as he. Gustavus Adolphus PALM was the head of this family. Mr. PALM served in the Civil War in a Mississippi infantry regiment. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. Memphis 1910 directories show Mr. PALM living near Jackson Ave. My grandfather earned his living as an artist, painting murals in the homes of wealthy Memphis families. When health problems developed, probably due to lead in his paints, he opened a saloon, "Otto's Place" in Memphis. He died in 1908. I think perhaps there were other German artists in Memphis during his time. We have a large oil painting of the Rhine River in Germany that was by a "friend." The painting hung on the wall of "Otto's Place." I would very much like to contact anyone researching the German community in Memphis. Best wishes, Cora McDonnell jdm9717@tlh.fdt.net

I just want to tell you that Memphis TN Main library on Peabody St. has one of the best libraries I have been to. It is loaded with information. I am from Michigan but my mother's mother and maternal grandparents were from east TN but later years, early 1900's move to Memphis TN where my mother and other relatives were born. I was able at my state library to find grandparents and g-grandparents on the TN census for all years except 1910 and I had search all the surrounding states census to no avail. Last month I was in Memphis TN for my National Church Convention and went to the library and I search the City Directory and guest what they were right there living in Memphis. The mystery even unfolded more. I search the Memphis Death Records Index for my mother's maternal grandfather and daughter which I had obtain their death record before. But there was a son all we knew was they called him Uncle Bud. Well the 1900 census for MS where they had move from TN in the late 1890's listed additional children that had been born since the 1880 TN census. So I search for the one son in the death records index, there were four James TODD and the first one I looked up was my maternal grandmother's brother and he had died from malaria in 1910 and that was the reason why they did not show up on the 1910 TN census because their house was quarantine. If you have relatives that live there any length of time that library is loaded with information for that area and the surrounding area of TN. I found my mother's paternal grandfather whom I had run in to a dead end on. I found him in the card file, because they have card files on individuals and families and it was for a freedman's Bureau Bank Deposit and it listed his wife's name, his parent's name and the city and state he was raised. So if you can it worth a trip there. I planning now on when I can go back, me and other relatives to do some detail research. Have a great day!
