    1. RE: More researchers, please

    3. Nancy, the books are the three volumes of Gravestone Inscriptions from Shelby County Cemeteries. They are available at several libraries, among them the Franklin County TN library and the Madison County library in Huntsville, AL. There are in print, and can be purchased from the Tennessee Genealogical Society in Arlington (see county GenWeb site for address). Your local library could likely be persuaded to purchase them if you make a donation designated for that purpose. They are well worth the effort. Helen has also transcribed for the county tombstone project, a couple of the rural Shelby cemeteries. She sent the URL to the list a bit ago. I have found a Branch, though not your J.K. or Margaret A.C.E., buried in the Magnolia Cemetery (listing is on p. 89 of volume III, but the sheet I have was sent to me by another researcher because of the WYLIE listing on it -- I have no idea where the cemetery itself is other than Shelby County). Two stones on lot: Dr. B.L. Branch Son of Howell and M.F. Branch Sept 15, 1856 Apr 25, 1920 At rest Footstone: Dr. DLB [the "D" is marked as "sic"] Williamson - Fannie Joyner Stamps Born May 23, 1861 Md. Dr. B.L. Branch Apr. 24, 1889 Md. Dr. J. F. Williamson Mar. 14, 1922 Died Feb 19, 1926 Cradle foot: Wife Curious, isn't it? Anyway, perhaps this will help. Susan G. 1. Title of book, cemetery listings, etc.
    2. Susan Wilson
    3. I dug out the cemetery listing with the notes and the book title I mentioned yesterday. As is typical, I had it slightly wrong. There are two books, one the Herring-Burrows book, Arlington, and one this book, The Holy Innocents, by Ellen Davies Rodgers. The library I was speaking of is the Arlington branch of the Memphis library, and is located on the Davies Plantation housed by the Tennessee Genealogical Society. I've seen so many names yesterday and today that I'm having trouble keeping up with who's researching who. Has everyone registered their surnames with the county TNGenWeb site? Does anyone have a suggestion for how to keep who's doing what straight on this list? I ask because I have photocopies of the listings for SOME of the cemeteries in and around Arlington/Brunswick (the ones my relatives are in) and have infrequent access to all three volumes if I ever have time to get to the library. I *know* there's someone researching Matthews, for instance, and there are a couple listed in one of the cemeteries. I can't just copy the whole listing -- it's copyrighted. And the number of posts in the last couple of days makes the task of looking back through them for particular surnames rather daunting. Would someone care to take on the task of starting a database of surnames and researchers? I simply don't have time to do it with my work schedule and my class work (I'm getting my master's degree, and it is intense!). Susan G. 2. Susan Carpenter
    3. I am researching two CARPENTER brothers who moved to TN after the War Between the States- Alfred Solomon and Sidney. Alfred was born 07 Oct 1833 in Lincoln County, NC and was the son of John and Mary Rasour Carpenter. He was in Co. B, 23rd NC Infantry. He moved to TN sometime after the war and married Emma Anderson in 1884, who was born in 1868 in Haywood County TN. Alfred was reported "living in Memphis" and died in 1909. I have called every cemetery I could find a phone number for and can't locate his grave, so he is probably in a church cemetery or a private one. Emma died in 1957. All I have on Sidney is that he was "living in Brownville, TN." before 1903 and is reportedly buried in Memphis. He was born 20 Dec, 1839 in Lincoln County NC. If anyone knows anything about these folks or their children, I sure would love to find out. Or if you have any idea how I can find out their burial places, children, etc. They are brothers of my great great grandmother. Susan Carpenter scs@salisbury.net

    1. Re: BROWN
    2. Searching for family of Earl and Nina B. Brown. Nina was my husbands grandmother. Born Nina B. Dukes, Aug. 5, 1888 in Alabama, we think. She had been married about three times. She lived in Memphis for quite awhile. She had at least 8 children. Earl Brown was her last husband. I found a child of Earl and Nina's named Robb Brown, listed in one of the families obituaries from 1970. At that time Robb was in Pensacola, FL. That is all I know about him. If I could find this Robb Brown, it would help me with my "brick wall" about my husbands grandmother. My husband was an only child and has almost NO family left to help us. Any information is appreciated. Thanks for writing. It's not much to go on, but does anything look familiar? Brown is such a common name and I haven't really done much. Looking forward to hearing from you. Happy hunting, Anita Brooks in KS

    2. Hi all, Glad to finally get some activity on this list. I was real disappointed their was such little sharing going on about Shelby County. For such a large city, there is not much on the web about genealogy. Another good source of reference, especially about businesses is the R.L. Polk City directories. They come out every year for almost every city and town. On my last visit to the Memphis library I found a real wealth of information in these. It makes tracking people year by year much simpler. I know they go back as far as about 1920, and I'm told they go back even farther. Most libraries will have copies of their city directories. And yes, most of the people in the Memphis Library the day we visited their, were from out of town too. Happy Hunting. Anita Brooks from Kansas

    2. Researching TODD, WHERRY, HARRIS, JONES, Bernetta MCDONALD, DALEY, SMITH. I mother was born in Memphis TN but was raised in the North However my grandparents and g-grandparents lived in Memphis TN many years and other relatives were born in Memphis TN and Dyer Cty. My is mixed with Creek, Cherokee and Irish on my mother's Maternal side and on her paternal side they are African American and Cherokee Indian. I would like to know a girl was black or mixed and 14 years old back in 1922 or a girl age 10 years and black what school would they have attended in Memphis TN back in 1922. In doing research is the excess to get copies of school records if the individual is deceased. If anyone is researching any of these name let me know. Thanks! My HAYS line stops at death of Sarah M. HAYS in 1858. Maiden name probably CRAIG. Believe she was the daughter of William W Craig and Ester Montgomery who married in Blount Co. in 1802 and were in Gibson by 1828. Her husband was probably John B. Hays from Gibson although the marriage license lists a "Sally Craig". Have not found death of John in Gibson or Shelby, he died between 1840 and 1850. Sarah was listed in the 1850 Agricultural Survey in the first Civil District in Shelby Co. as head of farm and in census of same year with children: William, Henry M., Esther, Elvira, Mary , Julia Elizabeth and John. At her will settlement names who signed bonds, etc. were: H.M. Hays, W.M. Oglesby, J.D. Stewart, Thomas Epperson, WW C Hays. Family were Cumberland Presbyterians and have not been able to locate a burial site or exact location of her farm. Daughter Mary (Mollie) married J.P. Sullivan with C.M. Stewart as bondman. C.M.'s mother was a Craig. Families are closely related, I believe. Suggestions most welcome. Mollie Molnar

    1. Roll Call & Online Information Update
    2. WOW! I am so pleased with all the responses and activity on this list. I was gone for most of the day and when I checked my mail, I had about 75 messages, most from this list. I think that is great. I think it is especially nice that there were offers to do lookups from available material. Also, it looks like maybe a few people made contact with someone else who is researching their line. That's always helpful. I also want to thank everyone who wrote me to let me know they had found something useful in the abstracts & those that just wanted to thank me for the effort. If anyone has connections with Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the main historical files are here in Memphis. If you need an address, let me know. I don't know if they have a web site or not. I looked at the 1930 Memphis City Directory at the library today. Looks like we will not be able to put them online......they are copyrighted. Someone was asking about a big cemetery here called Glenwood. I believe that is probably Elmwood, the oldest cemetery in Memphis, I believe & it is HUGE. As far as I know, only the portion called Confederates' Rest is online. There are also some other Shelby Co. cemeteries online (I know because I did 2 of them myself!). The address is: http://rootsweb.com/~cemetery/tenn.html (click on Shelby County). The library here has Memphis & Shelby Co. Death Certificates (1848-1945) online. You can find these at: http://www.memphislibrary.lib.tn.us/history/ OR there is a link to the library page on the Shelby County Genweb page. There is SO MUCH info at the library that could be put online. Any volunteers? Helen
