Sorry folks, I haven't been very active lately on the site or the list. I moved back to Shelby Co. after being away for 13 years in March but we lived with my brother for the 1st 3-4 months we were here until our house sold in VA. We are now in our own house and my hard drive has crashed twice since I have had it up and running and it is still down at this time. I'm hopping that I haven't lost too much information. I backed it up regularly. I am now using my husbands computer until I can get mine back up and running. If anyone has any suggestion on what they would like to see on the Shelby County site please let me know. Also, if anyone is willing to do lookups or transcribing let me know too. I would really like to get the site more alive. Thanks, Rhonda Schurhamer Shelby Co. Coordinator & List Owner
If anyone wants to volunteer to do lookups or transcribing please let me know. I haven't had many volunteers so far and it is hard for me to do it all and take care of a house and 3 small children. Hi All! I grew up in Memphis, and am researching so many names in Shelby County. Here goes: RICHTER, PALM: My grandfather, Otto F. Richter immigrated to Memphis from Germany about 1885 - as a teenager. He lived with the family of Gustavus Adolphus Palm, a Civil War veteran who was also from Otto's village in Germany. Which village? I wish I knew! After earning his living as an artist, ill health forced him to stop painting murals, and he had a saloon on Adams St. VANDERCAMMEN, TIELENS, COLLOMP, RODET, ETTIENNE: Otto Richter married an immigrant from Belgium, Louise Vandercammen. Louise's family immigrated to Memphis about 1890. Her sister Elise married Fred Tielens; sister Julia married Pascal Collomp, sister Marie married ______ Rodet , and their widowed mother, Leocadie married Charles Ettienne. There were also three brothers: Jimmy, Antoine and Rafael. DAVIS, ASHLEY, GARRETT, PICKERING: My ggrandfather was John Howell Davis. He came to Memphis from Indiana sometime in the 1850s to build a contracting business, buying land in Shelby Co. on what was the Old Randolph Road, now north Seventh St. Conscripted to fight at Shiloh, he returned home to die in 1864. His wife, Sarah, remained on Seventh St. raising their family. Daughter Emma married Joe Pickering (I think he worked for a railroad - His brother Al Pickering worked for the L&N. Al married a cousin of the Davis family, Ethyl Davis from Evansville, IN). Daughter Sarah married Will Garrett. Daughter Anne married William Ashley. Son, John Houston Davis, my grandfather, was an engineer on the Frisco Railroad. He died in 1925. RICHARDSON, OWEN, DALTON, WEDDLE. STURM: My ggrandmother, Mary Emma Richardson, came to Memphis from Brownsville, TN about 1883. Widowed, she brought her children and a sister, Milred (Minnie) Owen who married ______ Dalton, and her brother, Lyne Owen. Mary Emma earned a living running a boarding house. Her daughter Ida married John Weddle, a railroad conductor. Dorothy Sturm, who was a noted Memphis artist, was their granddaughter. Her son, Malcom Richardson, owned several grocery stores in Memphis around the turn of the century. His children were daughters, Emma (married Albert Gross), Elizabeth (an RN in Memphis), Malcom Jr. and Jack Richardson. Mary Emma's daughter, Cora, was my grandmother. She married John Davis, and they lived on Seventh St. where I grew up as part of a third generation living in my grandfather's house. I know a lot about these ancestors, but there's always questions needing answers. Genealogy is such a great addiction! Best wishes, Cora Davis McDonnell
Dear Sandi, I would appreciate a look up in your marriage book. My ggrandfather, John Howell Davis, his wife, Sarah A. , and two daughters, Emma and Ann, are listed in the Shelby Co., TN 1860 census. Emma, the oldest child, is age 8 yrs. - so she was born abt 1852 in Tennessee. Would you check to see if John and Sarah's marriage is listed in your book? John was born in KY, then moved to IN before coming to Shelby Co., TN. Sarah was born in NY - I have no idea what her maiden name was. She did live until 1892 and is buried in Elmwood Cem. Still I don't know a surname for her parents, or how she came from NY to TN. Thanks for offering to do look ups. Best wishes, Cora McDonnell Sandi wrote: > I'm researching Minton, Dryden, Smith and Thorne in Shelby Co. > > By the way, I have one book that I will do look ups in if anyone needs it. > It is: "Marriages of Shelby County, Tennessee 1820-1858." My connection to Shelby County is tenuous, but I'm trying to use it to locate some information and break through a brick wall. My grandparents were married in Shelby County in April 16, 1938: James Brown CLEMENTS [27 Feb1861 in Tipton Co, TN - 4 Nov 1888] Sarah Elizabeth (Sally) KNOX [12 January 1864 in Florence, AL?? - 22 Mar 1958 in Marbury, AL) I would like to figure out what were they doing in Shelby County. I don't know if a marriage license is available -- I live in rural northern Nevada, and we have few genealogical resources available here. I don't think Shelby County can help me with this, but I have been unable to trace my grandmother's line past her parents: Robert McComb KNOX [July 1826 NC - aft. 1910 prob. Tipton Co, TN] who married, bet. 1850-52 in AL, to Martha Jane ? (perhaps BROOKS) [abt. 1832 in Montgomery AL - 1864/68] I know only that Robert's parents were born in NC, and I'm not even sure of Martha Jane's last name. (The name Brooks came from another researcher. The Martha whose last name was Brooks may have been married to another Robert Knox, who lived in Montgomery, AL, rather than my great grandfather). My Nathan FORREST is Nathan Bedford Forrest. I have quite a bit of information on him, but I'm having trouble finding much on 3 of his half-siblings from his mother's second marriage. I would especially like to find the family of his only sister who lived to adulthood, Mary Jane "Mollie" Luxton FONTAINE, b. @ 1848. I also have very little information on brothers Joseph LUXTON b. between 1842-1846 and Dickie LUXTON, b. @1850. Both served with N.B. Forrest in the 3rd TN Cavalry, organized in Shelby Co. The Luxton children were likely born on one of the plantations that N. B. Forrest owned--perhaps in Panola Co., MS, and lived with their mother Miriam FORREST LUXTON in Raleigh Springs, Shelby Co., from 1861 - 1868. Deborah, I just know that the Blackwoods should be easy to find out about in Shelby County ( memphis) because The Blackwood Brothers gospal group is very popular there and around the South. I went to school with one of their daughters so I guess it's their hometown. Alot of them are connected and you could get names off of Album covers and work backwards.BIO's should be easy to find. Robyn <Allied families are: Robertson,Blackwood, Kesterson, Dorsey, Wallace, Propps, Hale, Stephenson. Does anyone know anything about these families or the migration into Shelby/Hardeman Cos during this time?>
Robert Price and Mary Anderson married in 1811 in Jackson Co TN. By 1838, they were in Shelby Co TN, where he died. Allied families are: Robertson, Blackwood, Kesterson, Dorsey, Wallace, Propps, Hale, Stephenson. Do anyone know anything about these families or the migration into Shelby/Hardeman Cos during this time? I would like to know the migration route to Shelby Co.. Where did the majority of the settlers come from? Dorothy
To me, the earliest tax and land records in an area are most valuable. There is a lot of information here. Basically, you have to get your own copy of the census, whether it is in book, microfilm or CD. USGENWEB provides the software to input the census. It's a big job, but worth the time and effort for everyone to have free access to the census. Good luck. Helen
I need to see land records up to 1850. My ancestor paid taxes on land but I have not found out how she acquired the land. Did she get it from a spouse? Tn Grant? of if she purchased it herself, from whom! In the final settlement of probate her grandson was supposed to receive money and I have not found if he ever received it. Dorothy Cox Sugar Land
