Bob, go to http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html and do a query. Don't enter anything in the fields you don't know (like "feature name"), just feature type (cemetery), the state and the county. Bingo! You get a list with links to exact location (longitude and latitude), and a further link to a map showing the location. Shelby County has these cemeteries: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Geographic Names Information System Query Results SHELBY COUNTY, TENNESSEE -- Anyone researching a Marjorie Prout or an Ollie Marshall in Memphis around the turn of the century? In going through my family photos, I have these two people mentioned as family friends (my family is ALLEIN.) Both photos taken around the turn of the century; the one with Ollie Marshall would have to be before 1909 (Ollie is a woman, 30-ish?, extremely attractive.) Marjorie is about ten years old, maybe younger, also around 1909 or so. Both photos were developed in Memphis, TN, but the one photo with Marjorie may have been taken in Vicksburg, MS. Hi Linda! Peggy Dyas
Can anyone tell me the names of the Cemeteries in and around Millington, and Kerrville ,TN. I have received information that a cemetery is also located on the Naval Air Station, Millington. Anybody have anything on that and who one could contact in reference to its occupants. In 1926 my Grand Mother EMMA JANE PARKER was interned in a Millington area cemetery by a local funeral home that is no longer in business. Appreciate any help, Bob Parker Sgtmajrp@aol.com
Yes, you're right. The Midtown cemetery is the oldest one. Best wishes, Cora BSTARK9999@aol.com wrote: > Are you sure it is Forest Lawn Cemetery? Hi Dorothy! Since you are lucky enough to know the dates of death for these people, have you tried searching in microfilms of the Commercial Appeal, dates for a day or two after the date of death? The Memphis Library on Peabody St. has the microfilms (I think they have that recent a date for the newspaper), and if you can't get to Memphis, an inter-library loan should be possible. I would consider writing to the office at Elmwood Cemetery. They have been very helpful in my searchs. For such a recent burial, they may be able to give you names of surviving relatives. Their address is: Elmwood Cemetery, 824 S. Dudley St., Memphis, TN 38104. My very helpful contact in '96 was Marian Frye, Business Development Coordinator. Their phone number is (901)774-3212. I wish I could say that Forest Hills Cemetery was as helpful - most of my family are buried there - but I have received little/no information from them when I requested it. Best wishes, Cora DEC1019@aol.com wrote: > Would like to get a copy of an obituary of the following: > > Hazel E. Is anyone researching the COE surname? If you are, I have a newspaper article about him that you may want to have. Helen

Are you sure it is Forest Lawn Cemetery? I looked in the phone book and there was no Forest Lawn but one of the big cemeteries in Memphis is Forest Hill. The address for Forest Hill is: Forest Hill Cemetery and Funeral Home 2440 Whitten Road East Memphis, TN 38133 901 382-1000 or 1661 Elvis Presley Blvd. Midtown Memphis, TN. 38106 901 775-0310 or 2545 E. Holmes Rd. South Memphis, TN. 38118 901 346-3250 I don't know which one would be the oldest cemetery, but I would think probably the Midtown one. Hope this helps

James, Could you post this info to all the list? I am also interested in migration routes. Thanks, Helen
James I have tried to acknowledge your response to my question on the migration routes of our Shelby Co... Ancestors. The problem is the mail keeps bouncing even when I hit the reply button. I thank you for your response. Dorothy

I have the 1885 Memphis City Directory and the Forsythe's listed are: Ida, Jesse, Maggie, Ora and Paul T. If you want addt'l info on these please let me know. All of the old directories are on microfilm at the library also, which would be available for inter-library loan. Bobbie
