Both I believe are 1177Union Ave my mother asks that she think that Forest Hill Cemetery had moved a branch out to them. My g-grandmother Caroline Julia Dennis Cocke had owned the land tht Forest Hill Cemetery is on. This was way back in time. Yes, there is a street called Alcy Road. It runs east and west through the south part of Memphis. It runs from I240, intersects Elvis Presley Blvd and runs all the way to Airways Blvd. I guess that would be considered south Memphis, maybe southeast. There were several Ellises mentioned in "Collierville Her People and Neighbors", but not William or Elizabeth. Betty

According to the book "Memphis Memoirs" by Paul R. Coppock the E.L. Bruce Company opened in 1921. It occupied 43 acres on Thomas. At the time it was outside the city limits. In 1958 they bought the Welsh plant which made wall paneling. It was located at 1218 Hollywood. It stated that by 1968 Bruce had been hit hard because the FHA guaranteed only homes with wall to wall carpeting. The Bruce plant on Thomas closed in 1965. In 1968, Cook & Company, bought out Bruce. The headquarters were moved to the CTH Building in the Ridgeway Development at I-240 and Poplar. In 1977 the hardwood flooring mills were sold to Triangle Pacific Corporation in Dallas. So as to the question of where the records might be, take your pick. It would be my guess there are no personnel records left. Just my opinion.
Someone was asking about where certain civil districts were. In a book I was reading it mentioned several as follows: Civil District #9-Fisherville Civil District #10-Collierville Civil District #11-Germantown
Hi JN, E. L. Bruce Lumber Co. was a huge hardwood flooring company in North Memphis, on Thomas St. I believe. Memphis is/was one of the largest providers of hardwood flooring in the USA, almost as famous as Memphis is for cotton. How about contacting the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, or maybe the Memphis History Room at the Public Library on Peabody? Hi Robyn and Joy, National Funeral Home was on Union Ave. where the interstate was built (I 240 or whatever the number is) that goes thru midtown Memphis. It was one of the main funeral homes in the city, and it probably merged with another. I think perhaps a call to one of the f. h. listed in the Memphis telephone directory would get you information on where the National F. H. files are held. Fortune's Jungle Gardens, a favorite teen-age drive-in on Union Ave., also fell prey to the Interstate. The National Cemetery on Jackson Ave. is just that - a National (Federal) Cemetery for burial of soldiers. Best wishes, Cora Robyn wrote: > >There was also no National Funeral Home. I found a reference to the Lucy Brinkley Hospital in a book called "Paul R. Coppock's Mid-South-Vol.IV" edited by Helen M. Coppock and Charles W. Crawford. R. C. Brinkley named the Hospital for his dead wife, Lucy. It was a hospital for women and was started about 1890. At first it was on Washington between Third and Fourth Streets. It was in a residence. After Mr. Brinkley's death a new facitlity was built at Union and Dunlap. This became Methodist Hospital in 1918. Hope this answers your question. Betty Stark

Can anyone remember the name? Robyn
In 1971 my grandmother's death was handled by the MEMPHIS FUNERAL HOME on Union St. I don't have an address for it but it and the NATIONAL FUNERAL could be one in the same. Also can I get the Shelby county cemetery book on interlibrary loan? Elizabeth from Daytona Beach looking for the buriel site of Henry B. Howell in Shelby County.

I am seeking information regarding a Herman J Billings who was a resident of the Memphis area up until about 1980. He was born about 1906 according to the age given on his marriage record to Katherine D Watson, on file in Memphis, dated 1928. A very nice lady checked the Memphis City Directories and found that Herman is listed as a foreman with the E L Bruce Lumber Co of Memphis. Can anyone give any info on the lumber co? Having found no phone listing for the lumber co, I would ask if someone might know what happened to the company and its records. I am presently waiting for a death certificate for a Herman Billings who died in Memphis in 1980, but I am not sure this is going to be the person I am hunting. Any info, no matter how small will be appreciated. Thanks in advance, JN

Looking to share info with the family of Margaret "Dolcie" Winn b 1869 married to Andrew Jackson Tennison, Jr. TENNISON At residence, 883 Breedlove St., Saturday evening, Dec. 27, 1941 at 6:45 o,clock, Mrs. Margaret Winn Tennison aged 72 years. Mother of Mrs. C.M.Staples of Jackson, Miss. and William Andrew and David W. Tennison of Memphis, Tn. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. T.O. Slaughter will be held at the National Funeral Home, 1177 Union Ave., this (Monday) afternoon at 2:30 o,clock. Friend are invited. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. (New Orleans,La. and Jackson, Miss. papers please copy.) Small write-up in newspaper stated her husband was a former boxmaker for Binswanger & Co. Also, that she was an active member of Decatur Street Christian Church and belonged to the Woman's Benefit Association and the Pioneer Club. Does anyone know if any of these places are still in existence and if so where do I write? Thanks for any HELP, Joy ===== joywinn@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com
Hi Joy, I checked the telephone book for the different places you mentioned and could only come up with the following: Forest Hill Cemetery 1661 Elvis Presley Blvd. (Midtown) (This would probably be the main one, if you want the other addresses please email me) Memphis, TN. 38106 (901) 775-0310 There was no Binswanger and Co. that manufactures boxes. There is however, a Binswanger's Glass Co. Executive Offices (901) 767-7111 965 RidgeLake Blvd. Memphis, TN. 38120 I could not find a Pioneer Club or a Women's Benefit Assn. Chances are they have updated the name or disbanded. The church you mentioned, Decatur Street Christian Church, was not in the telephone book either, but there was : Decatur Trinity Christian Church (901) 388-4511 or 388-6241 2449 Altruria Road Memphis, TN. 38134 There was also no National Funeral Home. It probably has merged with one of the larger funeral homes or gone out of business. Your best bet would probably be to contact Forest Hill Cemetery. Some cemeteries keep card files on people buried there. I'm not sure if the churches keep files on deceased members. Hope this helps in your search. Betty
