Thank you Betty. I am the one who was looking for this information. Now I've got something to go on! Thank you again, Debbie dabrigman@aol.com

I always wondered if there was an easier way to figure a birthdate when you only know how old and death date of a person. Here it is: your can figure it from the information given on the email or you can go to the webpage and it has a chart you fill in with the information and it will figure it for you. I'm sure it is much more accurate then the way I do it-counting on my fingers!! :)) Have a great day. Can anyone give me a look up on the 1920 Memphis, Tn. census. The family of William PARKER, 324 Leath Street, Memphis, Tn. and 218 Exchange St., Memphis, Tn. Thank you, Bob Parker Sgtmajrp@aol.com
Seeking information on Claude Ridinger McClure. Name could be just Claude Ridinger (without the McClure). All I know about him at this time is he died March 7, 1936. I am assuming he died in Memphis since he is buried at Forest Hill "Midtown" in Memphis. He was 61 years of age at time of death. He is somehow associated or related to my great uncle, Clinton R. McClure (dob 12/23/1902 dod 10/14/1976), husband of Linnie Mai ?, also of Memphis. Clinton and Linnie Mai took care of all funeral arraingments when Claude died. Any help or clues are appreciated. A very nice person has taken the time to check the GNIS Mapping Service and found that the Chamber Chapel Cemetery is located east of the City of Memphis(about 10 miles from Memphis' eastern city limit), almost to the Shelby County line. My question is if anyone knows if there is a church there with the cemetery. Looking for the graves of Herman and Katherine Billings who may be buried there. Any help appreciated.
I checked the GNIS Mapping Service and it says Chambers Chapel Cemetery is in Eads, TN. Don't know about an index. Betty
Hello, I'm new to this list, and so bear with me... I just received the death certificate of my maternal gmother, and am now researching info contained on it-- Two items puzzle me and I am wondering if anyone out there knows the answers: 1. Hospital where death occurred in 1917 is listed as "Presbyterian." I need to know how to obtain information about this hospital and its records, if they still exist. 2. The Funderal Home listed: Collins-- would a City Directory be the best bet, if this funderal home no longer exists-- again, I'm interested in getting the burial records as Elmwood is having difficulty locating her records, even though she is definitely buried there and has a headstone. Thanks for any info/tips. Maribette
Please forgive my snafu, but I gave the wrong first name for the Billings man I am reserching. His name was not Benjamin as I posted, but rather Herman J Billings. Thanks.
I have recieved information that the Benjamin Billings I am researching died on Oct 28, 1980 in Memphis. I understand he is supposedly buried in the Chambers Chapel Cemetery. I checked my Memphis Telephone book and did not find a Chambers Chapel Cemetery. First I would like to know if anyone knows the lcation of this cemetery. Second I would like to know if there exists a index to the cemetery that might show if his wife Katherine might be buried with him. Third I would like to know if anyone knows where I might write to get a obituary for him. Thanks in advance.

I'm reaching for straws! :) I'm looking for descendants of Alfa Lou ________ and Burt/Bert PIERCE. Alfa Lou was the best friend of my grandmother, Gertrude Irene PIKE CURRIE. My grandmother and grandfather died in 1919, leaving behind my father and his baby sister. My purpose in finding this PIERCE family is to find out more about my grandparents and perhaps a photograph. When my grandmother died it was Alfa Lou who stayed with her body to be sure she was treated with respect. Gertrude Irene PIKE b. 20 Feb 1891 Dyersburg, Dyer, TN, d. 22 Nov 1919, Dyersburg, Dyer, TN married Wayne Huff CURRIE, b. 1885, Amite Co., MS, d. 27 Nov 1919, Dyersburg, Dyer, TN. Dyersburg, Dyer, TN.............My grandmother was born and raised and taught school in Dyersburg. More than likely, these two ladies were childhood friends. During a visit to Dyersburg, Daddy remembers visiting with the PIERCE's and then spending the night with the State Senator who lived nearby. There was also a Green family who lived on the same street. Oakland, Yalobusha, MS...............The PIERCE's came to Memphis to buy a Star Touring Car ca 1929. My father and his grandmother rode back to Oakland with the Pierce's. Daddy said there were no roads, so the ride was very bumpy!.................Bert drove an International truck and made deliveries to a pulpwood mill in Charleston, Tallahatchie, MS. Memphis, Shelby, TN.............Alfa/Effie Lou and Bert PIERCE had four children: James (worked for a drug wholesaler in Memphis, Shelby, TN maybe somewhere around 2nd or Gayoso streets) Jeff, Ann (may have been raised by someone else in Oakland, Yalobusha, MS)and another daughter. The PIERCE's lived in Memphis about 1934 and owned a boarding house. My father remembers working at Kraus Cleaner's and walking to the boarding house at Court and Dunlap to eat lunch. The boarding house rented to medical school folks. The family may have sold the boarding house and moved to 144 Bellvue. Page 218 Taken from information on the formation of the Baptist Church. Shiloh Baptist was the forerunner to the First Baptist Church in Collierville. "In 1853, J.B. Canada, a noted minister, served Shiloh's membership of fourty-four, thirty-one whites and thirteen blacks. Messengers to the Big Hatchie were E. Bray, F.M. Robinson, and W. Cargill. J.B. Canada represented both Shiloh and Collierville. Many of the delegate's names are found in the early Shelby County records." "In 1856 only Canada and Robinson attended the meeting. The church maintained a memebership of thirty-six, twenty-four whites and fourteen blacks." "It is apparent that there was a change of the church's location by 1857. The same messengers represented both the Shiloh and Collierville churches. They were J.B. Canada, W.H. Allen, and J.C. Griffin. However, two ministers listed were J.B. Canada for Shiloh and J.L. Canada was messenger to the Big Hatchie meeting and listed the membership as thirty-nine. In 1866 Collierville failed to send a representative or a report, but by 1867 the congregation of seventy-nine had moved back to Shiloh. There were thirty-eight memberships by baptism and twenty-one received by letter. Messengers to the Big Hatchie meeting were E.B. Lewis, T.H. Cargill, and J.B. Canada. The 1868 memebership was seventy-two, and Joseph H. Borum voted by proxy. The membership declined in 1869 to fifty-four with ten dismissals. The delegates that year were J.B. Canada, N.P. Moore, and T.H. Cargill. In 1870 J.B. Canada, N.P. Moore, and T.H. Cargill represented Shiloh, and in 1871 D. Dodson servd as messenger with J. Bateman as minister." "When the church reorganized at Collierville, those listed as charter members were Mr & Mrs. Dillingham Dodson, Mrs. Sarah Blocker Rowlett, Mr. & Mrs. Ira D. Reed, Rev. J.B. Canada, Capt. Patrick H. Strickland, Mrs. Mary Henry Smith, Mrs. Anna Hughes, and Mrs. A.M. Morton." Page 220 "In 1877 and 1878, the church was represented at the Association's meeting by Rev. T.P. Manning, J.B. Canada, W. They were the parents od five sons and one daughter. At one time, J.B. Canada and three of his brothers were all residents of Shelby County. They were Daniel W. Canada who was married to Mary Seward Jan. 27, 1852, by Rev. J.B. Canada and William Harrell security. The other brothers were Henry and Wills. Their father, Willis Canada, served in the War of 1812 under Captain Moore's Company in the 5th Regiment Militia and was stationed in Norfolk,VA. His tenure of service was from Aug. 1, 1813, to Jan. 8, 1814. Willis Canada married a second time to Maria Canada, born Dec. 2, 1843, in Halifax Co. By this marriage there were four children. Willis Canada died May 29, 1851. He was a farmer by occupation, and his real estate was valued at $3,575 in 1850. His widow, Maria, received a pension in 1878 of $8 per month on claim No. 25017. John B. Canada, the second son by the first marriage, was baptized at Riceville Church and was licensed to preach at Eliis Creek Church in Nov., 1843. Rev. Canada realized the necessity of a more thorough education and spent the next six years earning his theological degree. He attended Boteourt Seminary in Virginia, and graduated with high honors from Columbian College at Washington, D.C. Rev. Canada came to Shelby County Dec. 1, 1849, and taught school and preached at Prosperity Church (near Bartlett). He was ordained in Aug., 1850, by the presbytery that composed of Elders P.S. Gayle, A.S. Wynne, J.L. Cross, and Martin Hodges. On Oct. 17, 1850, he married by J.L. Cross to Caroline J. Dennis, daughter of J. S. Dennis from Germantown. Rev. Canada was described as a man of about six feet in statue, weighting 175 lbs. with sandy hair. Caroline was born Sept. 15, 1831, in Baltimore Co., MD. There were ten children born to this marriage. Rev. Canada's ministry was limited to west Tennessee and north Mississippi Missionary Baptist Churches. He was well known and highly respected in the ministrial field. Some of the churches he served were Bartlett, Macon, Fisherville, Collierville, Coldwater, Oakland, New Hope, Eudora, and Galloway. He raised the necessary money to build three Baptist Churches contributing largely from his own funds. Rev. Canada was known to have had a large mouth with a powerful voice that earnestly preached the gospel striving to convert sinners. His excellent mind commanded the attention of his audiences. Rev. Canada had a compassion for younger ministers and gave encouragement when needed. Eudora Baptist Church held a special meaning for Rev. Canada. The Canadas had previously lost a child in still birth, and Rev. Canada promised God that if the child to be born were a girl, she would be named Eudora, and so the child was named. Eppy White had donated two acres for a church, and because of the generous gift, the church was named "Eudora" meaning "a gift" in Greek. The church at the time was in the country, but today is at Poplar and Perkins. The first Canada child was William Wills, born Oct. 30, 1851, and died July 25, 1881, with burial at Edmonston Cemetery on State Line Road in the old Whitehaven area. He married Sallie T. Brewster March 4, 1874. She was born June 1, 1854/55, and died July 30, 1928, with burial at Forest Hill-Midtown with her son, John Walter, born Dec. 27, 1876, and died June 1, 1944. John W. Canada was with the law firm of Canada, Russell, and Turner. Mr. Canada was a nationally known corporate lawyer and was chairman of the airport commission from its inception in 1929, and was a pioneer aviator. John Canada married Virginia Broadus, born Nov. 16, 1890, and died Nov. 6, 1975, with burial at Forest Hill-Midtown. Rev. Canada's second child was John S., born ca. 1853, and died June 14, 1908. In 1880 he married Bell Hancock and had four children. John S. Canada was an outstanding doctor in north Mississippi. His funeral service was conducted by Rev. B.R. Hughey, and burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Independence, Tate Co., MS. A daughter, Mommie Flossye, was born Nov. 11, 1881 and died in 1969. She was married on Jan. 1, 1908, to Minor Merritt Powell, MD (1883-1971). Their son, John Canada Powell, MD, was born Feb. 5, 1909, and died March 4, 1982. He was married in 1933 to Mildred Veazey, born Dec. 22, 1910. The deceased were buried at Magnolia Cemetery , Coldwater, MS. Both father and son were noted doctors in the area. The next child of Rev. Canada was Adolphus G., born Nov. 11, 1854, and died Oct. 20, 1919, with burial at Magnolia Cemetery, Collierville. The fourth child of Rev. Canada was Lucius Telbes Marcelles Canada, born Feb. 7, 1859, and died Oct. 14, 1925, with burial at Elmwood, Memphis. He received his M.A. degree from the Southwestern Baptist University at Jackson, TN., attended Cumberland Law School, and was admitted to the bar in 1887. He first married Iola Kittridge and second to Mrs. Florence S. Oliver. Their son was Barton T. Canada, born ca. 1891, and died Aug. 1, 1954, with burial at Collierville. Lucius taught school for many years at the Southern Baptist University and in Arkansas. He was a Mason and a memeber of the Sigma Alpha Fraternity.
