    1. Lutheran Church in Memphis
    2. the McDonnells
    3. By 1900 I understand that there was a large German community in Memphis, including my grandparents.. Their churches were St. Mary's (Catholic) on Third St. and Market and a Lutheran Church, maybe on Adams St., close to downtown Memphis. Can anyone give me an address for the Lutheran Church, or wherever their church records would be preserved? Thanks for your help. Cora McDonnell jdm9717@tlh.fdt.net

    2. I am seeking to find out what schools African Americans would have attended in Memphis TN back in 1915 thru 1930. Is there a list and who would have the students records from during that time. Also would anyone know where the Buchanan Beauty School Memphis was located at during that time. One of my relatives went to school there to learn how to do hair. Thanks for any help. 2. Hello everyone! I really could use some help here. I recently seen Louis Edgar TURNER in Shelby Co., on the Civil War Pensions site. I have been looking for a Lewis R. If anyone has access to some marriage records or census records that have Louis Edgar on them I would really just love to have that information! Thanks so much! Queet

    1. RE: Help please re: 1880 Census
    2. Lex Johnson
    3. G'day again, I looked again just now at the Mormon's online catalogue and found the 1880 census is listed under "Tennessee", but not under "Shelby County" or "Memphis". Please accept my apologies for inadvertently misleading you that the census wasn't available over here in Australia. I'll order the films in and plough through them for my family. If anyone happens to know which Enumeration District that 136 Vance Avenue would fall within, I'd be grateful if you'd let me know. As a kind person pointed out, Vance Avenue is in the old part of central Memphis. Regards, Lex. Lex Johnson Queensland, Australia. l.johnson@cqu.edu.au

    1. Help please re: 1880 Census
    2. Lex Johnson
    3. Dear All, I have a street address where my family lived in 1885 (from the Memphis City Directory) and would like to ask for help in getting an extract/transcript of all details for that address from the 1880 census, please. I understand the 1880 census was the first one to show where the parents of the residents were born. The 1880 census is apparently not available through the local Mormon's library, so I'm stuck without access to it. I've read that the soundex index for the 1880 census only includes those households which had children under the age of 10 years. That would probably rule my family out and so the soundex index is probably useless for me. Is there any other way of tracking down a family in the 1880 or 1890 censuses? If you think you can help, the address in 1885 was: 136 Vance Avenue, 7th Ward, Memphis, Shelby County. Known family members who would have been there in 1880: John YORK born 1812, Halifax, Nova Scotia Elizabeth born about 1815, England (John's wife) Sophia born about 1847, Florida (Their daughter) (possibly others too) John died in 1884. Elizabeth stayed there until at least the following year. However, she died on 20 September 1890 at 140 Elliott Street, 5th Ward, Memphis. Perhaps one of her children lived there. Any assistance or guidance will be greatly appreciated. Looking for suggestions, Lex. Lex Johnson Queensland, Australia. l.johnson@cqu.edu.au

    2. Hello, I am seeking information from the 1920 Tennessee soundex regarding a Katherine Watson. Katherine was born in 1912 and so should have been about 8 years old. Katherine's father's name was Lofton Richard Watson, but I don't know her mother's name. She may also have had a sister in the same household named Gloria, but I don't have any idea how old she might have been. I know that Katherine did not marry until 1928, so she should be in the soundex. I would look for this myself, but the B'ham Al library does not have the 1920 soundex or the Shelby Co census microfilm rolls. The soundex code for Watson is W325. I would appreciate it very much if someone could help me with this. Thanks in advance.

    1. Re: Calculating the birthdate...

    3. Dear All, The subtraction method for calculating birthdates based on age goes a bit wonky (i.e. skew-if, wrong) in certain special cases. Consider this fairly simple example: Suppose the person died March 5, 1888, > at the age of 0 years, 0 months, 7 days. > ****Write the year, month, day as:-> 18880305 > ****Subtract the age at death:-------> 000007 > ****This gives the figure:---------> 18880298 > ****Now subtract 8870:---------------> 8870 > ****The result is:---------------- > 18871428 That's read as Year 1887, 14th month, 28th day. In normal language, that's 28th February 1888. Do a quick reality check: >From 28th Feb to 5th March is 6 days in a leap year (as 1888 was), but only 5 days in other years. Maybe the system, as related to the list, doesn't always work. Even using one's fingers, provided you have eight of them (and two thumbs) and know how to use them, you'd know that the person was really born the day before on 27th February 1888. Moral: Don't throw away your fingers or your commonsense. Can anyone find an error in this? Regards, Lex. Lex Johnson Queensland, Australia l.johnson@cqu.edu.au
