Red, Have been following your inquiries with interest. My family members lived in and around Memphis, TN. I am looking for a John or Samuel Kurkendoll/Kurkendall, birth possibly mid 1800's from ILL who married a Mary Eubanks from MS. They had a daughter named Emma Jane who married a Parker who lived in Millington, TN. near Kerrville Shelby County. It is thought my Kuykendolls and some Parkers moved into AR late 1800s. Appreciate any help. Subscription information---Old Shelby County Magazine Old Shelby County Magazine--------------------------subscription price 15.oo for one year,25.00 for two years Pastimes Press P.O. Box 820152 Memphis Tennessee 38182 I don't want to mislead anyone, this is NOT a genealogical magazine but is a magazine about the history or "old times" in Shelby County. I grew up in Memphis and since I married moved away with my husband. I love this little magazine myself because I enjoy the history and it would have been the events going on in my great grandparents lives. My dad told me that two ladies in Midtown started printing it from their home a couple of years ago. If you live in Memphis and want to check it out dad said they are at many of the newstands. The price is 50cents on the cover and I didn't realize it was a little bit more to get it mailed until this morning. Have a great day ya'll!!!! My relatives went there also. It is in Desoto County, MS.
Most of my Memphis family tree members went across the state line to Hernando, Desoto Co., MS. You might give it a try. Anita
Re: where did they go if underage to marry.... I don't know where they would have gone in the 1800's, but I know that my mom married 3 times (I assume she was underage)in the 1940's, and she had to go over the state line into Hernando Mississippi. I don't even know what county that is. I need to do research there also. Lois Rodgers kenoticket@aol.com
Does anyone know . Where would a young couple go if they were under age to get married outside there county. Sometime between 1850 & 1853 I have one ancestor who got married and had a child by 1853 in another state . But he Thomas King was 17 in 1850 in Memphis . Memphis county clerk has no record of marriage liscense sooo I am supposing he went to a different county . Phebe was around 7 yrs younger so I suppose also they needed permission by parents . I dont know what the laws were about marriage age THEN , in the south. Does anyone know about tht ? thanks so much sheri
Hello! I subscribe to "Old Shelby County" magezine. This months issue had an article about a "feud" between the Bolton and Dickens Families. The story was sad but I thought it did have information in it that someone doing research on either of these families would be interested in. If anyone out there is researching this either of these families I will be happy to send you the info. from the story. I don't know if anyone else out there subscribes to this magezine but it's 50cents an issue an that includes the postage to come to my house in the mail each month, It has stories in it about old shelby county and I really have enjoyed it. Well, hope you all have a great day!!!!! Caroline
Hello! I haven't ever seen a school by that name in Raleigh, but I do remember my great grandparents telling me that when they were youn (circa 1870's) Raleigh was somewhat of a resort area and people would ride out there and picnic. There was atleast one hotel there that was on James Road near the Wolf River. I grew up in Raleigh myself but do not ever remember hearing anything about the school you mentioned.Just thought I'd put in my two cents worth! Have a great day!
