3. I've focused most of my previous research on my and my husband's northeast lines, but now I'm ready to tackle the more southerly ancestors. I'm having a little trouble with figuring out where to get started, though. This is what I have: Jacques Lafayette "Jack" Richmond b. 19 Mar 1904, Memphis d. Dec 1969, Memphis m. Alice Emily Kussmaul in either New York or Boston bef 1931 parents: Jack L. Richmond and Effie Taylor The above information is from my his daughter's baptismal certificate and birth certificate, and his Social Security Application. Unfortunately, there is no one to talk to in the family that I know who actually remembers him or knows anything about his background. I also found the following in the death records online for Shelby County: RICHMOND, EFFIE G 4/6/1931 57 YRS F W File# 3278 I'm not sure that she's the right Effie Richmond, though. I've been on the 'net looking for vital records sources, and it seems that I'm out of luck wrt finding a birth record from 1904. The only thing I can think of would be getting the 1910 census. Is there a 1910 census index available for Shelby County? (Since there are 4 CDs for the 1910 Shelby County census, I'd sorta like to narrow it down before I buy one.) With the census info, I might be able to get marriage info on his parents and work back from there. Any other suggestions? Thanks for any help you can offer. Carol Thatcher Hall Kent WA

    2. Thank you all very much for the kind words of encouragement in my census transcribing endeavor. I really appreciate it. I know some of you have asked, but I will not be able to scout for your relatives while I'm transcribing. It would be too much to have all of my own family research plus the census plus the requests from other people all over my very small desk. Sorry about that. If I say yes to one person I have to say yes to everyone and I'm not prepared to do that. You'll all just have to wait till I'm done! I will certainly keep everyone updated as to my progress. At this point I haven't even received the census yet so I haven't gotten very far yet! Again, if you're thinking about doing this too, e-mail Myra Chambers at Myra Chamb@cs.com and she'll help you with any questions you have. Thanks, Laura

File # 9864 from the Memphis & Shelby Cty Death Certificates (1902-1939) & Miscellaneous. I would be interested to know if there is any other information on this man especially a first name , where he may be buried, and any next of kin. The only info we have is that he apparently fell out of a window believe it or not. Thanking you in advance for your help.

    1. 1910 Shelby Co., TN census
    2. Sunday, Sept 17th, 2000 Hello Everyone, I wanted to let everyone know that I have just volunteered to transcribe online the 1910 census for Shelby Co., for the USGenWeb Census Project. This is the very first time I have ever done anything remotely like this so I'm nervous but excited too. I have no idea what to expect. My initial interest in doing it was that I was unable to find information and was hoping to get it this way, now I am more excited about being able to help out other folks who are banging their heads on brick walls. I plan on taking my time so that I will be as accurate as possible and because I have never done this before I have no clue how long it will take. There is a mailing list just for transcribers for help, so I'm hopeful. I have to rent the mircofilms myself but I don't mind, they're not that much ($2.50 to 3.50 ea.) and they gave me all the information I needed to find out where and how to get them. They are also providing me with the template for entering the census data. I hope that any of you that might be able to squeeze in a little time here and there might volunteer to do this too. If you would like to, contact Myra Chambers, TN coordinator at MyraChamb@cs.com she is very friendly and very helpful. If you haven't yet, visit the web site Tennessee - The USGenWeb Census Project or you can access it from the Rootsweb home page under Hosted Volunteer Genealogy Projects. I think this is a truly terrific thing. Laura Metzger

    2. I was wondering if someone who was going to be checking marriage records already might also check for a marriage record for a man with the surname of Forrest and a woman named Lera Clonts Watson Heights (spelled correctly?) which would have taken place between 1927 and 1965 in the Memphis area. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
