You can find it using the oft-neglected feature of www.google.com to search for images. Go to www.google.com Above the query box that naturally appears, click images. Enter Emerts Cove (only). You will get one picture. Click on the picture and you will go to a website (unspecified) with several more pictures. You will get a divided screen (top/bottom). To see a large version of the picture Click on the thumbnail print of the picture in the array at the bottom. And it will appear on the second half. The description is at the bottom. You can make a copy of the picture by right clicking on it and copying it to a picture file, etc. Other pictures in that file are Indian Gap, Newfound Gap, Mount Le Conte, Pittman Center, and other places. These should give you an idea of what the land was like for anybody who didn't live on that prime little piece of land in the picture of Emerts Cove. This summer I drove east from Maryville in Blount County on 411, through Sevier County, switching to 321 at Newport, then through Cocke, through Greene on 321 all the way to Johnson City, taking several side trips. The whole time I kept shaking my head wondering how exactly did the two different sets of families I have (one around Cosby, the other Rheatown/Limestone vicinity) even make a go of it there for the 60 or 80 years they respectively were there??? (1780s-1880s). It was absolutely gorgeous, breathtaking in every sense of the way to be "in the shadow of the Smokies". FYI, they ended up on the northern edge of the Ozarks in Missouri, where there are still hills (vs. shall we say Illinois near Chicago), but they are relatively gentle and at least you don't have to be part mountain goat to plant your fields. Of course, they might have been easier to clear in TN since the larger tree trunks would just roll down the hillside <grin> if you were lucky, FYI, I had gone through the Ozarks from SW Missouri (Lawrence/Dade Co) to Ruston LA and back up again, all the while staying off the interstate and as close to the ridge roads as I could get. It would beautiful, but just not quite up to the Smoky standard. Hope you enjoy the pictures! Families of interest. Cocke/Sevier-- Williams, Murrell, Lax, (collaterals --Henry, Ross, Bird, Jobe, McKissack). Greene/Washington -- Fortner, Chambers, Horton, Mullins, Martin, Sexton, DeFord, Marshall, Doane (too many collaterals for this crew to mention). Best Regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter
