The Knoxville Welsh Society announces its 136th St. David's Day celebration on Friday, March 1, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church parish hall, 544 North Broadway, Knoxville. In addition to the usual chatting, food, and festivities, our evening will include a program by Farr Horizons, a Celtic ensemble headed by Elizabeth Farr. Ms. Farr is an outstanding harpist who is renowned throughout the southeastern U. S. If you live in East Tennessee, which is the area covered by KWS, odds are good that you have at least one Welsh ancestor. Even if you don't, you have deep Celtic roots -- and THAT should motivate you to attend. We are also proud to welcome those few poor souls <g> who don't have any recognizable Celtic blood! Please mark your calendars now so you won't miss this sure-to-be tremendous event...and help us spread the word! For more information on the Society, please visit http://www.korrnet.org/welsh/ For more information on the ensemble, please visit http://home.att.net/~celtic.crossings/
I am trying to find information on my great- grandfather, WILLIAM HOUSTON JONES. My brickwall is his father. Date of Birth: 4/15/1873 Morgan County, Tennessee Date of Death: 1/17/1940 Married to NANCY ANN HOWARD Born in Tennessee Second Marriage: MARY LOUISE HALL Mother: Margaret Jones Father: Unknown Howard Born ? I have been told that he was born out of wedlock. The family back then kept hush-hush about it because of that and it also appears that he married a cousin or something. He was raised by his mother's parents so he took the name JONES. He is my grandmother's father. My grandmother is FLORENCE EMMA JONES. I will be happy to provide more detailed information if you want. Any connection, information would be greatly appreciated. Also please let me now if I can be of help to you. I have been searching for all Richard Williams living in east Tennessee between about 1790 and 1849. I have looked in sources too numerous to mention here. I can’t claim my research is exhaustive, but I am exhausted. My results to date are: Richard #1 . b. 18, Apr 1769. d. 15 Mar 1845. Buried in Eusebia Presbyterian Cemetery about 12 miles from Maryville. Married to Sally Williams 25 Jul 1800 in Blount Co. Sally Williams b. 16 Sep. 1774. d. 16 Oct 1831. Also buried in Eusebia Presbyterian Cemetery. Likely 1830 census, Blount Co. p. 297. Likely 1840 census, Blount Co. p. 112. Richard #2 b abt 1768-1770, possibly in VA. Son of John Williams, a member of the Eusebia Presbyterian Church. Richard named as heir and executor in John’s will filed in Blount Co. TN will book #9, p. 158, 1 Jun 1808 and posted on Rootsweb. Maybe same person as Richard #1. Richard #3 b. 16 Sept. 1782 in Surry Co. N.C. to Isaac Williams and Rachael Williams. Quakers, members of the Lost Creek MM in Jefferson Co. TN. 24 Nov 1804 Richard was disowned for marring contrary to the discipline. Richard’s ancestors are well documented. See Hinshaw, “Encyclopedia of American Genealogy”. Trail is cold on Richard’s marriage and subsequent family. Possibly 1830 census Blount Co, p. 260. Richard #4 b. 30 Dec 1786, probably Chatham N.C. d. 7 Jul 1849 Porter Co, Indiana. Son of William Williams & Rachael Williams who in 1805 were living in Sevier Co. M. Rachel Mills 2 Oct 1805. 1814 moved to Ind. Territory. Quaker. Well documented family line. Hinshaw, and see also: “History of Wayne County, Indiana.” Richard #5 b 16 Oct 1806 in Sevier Co. Tn, son of Isaac Williams and Amelia Gibson. Married Abigail Kern Oct 1811 in KY. D 10 Aug 1880 in Bedford, Lawrence Co, Indiana. Richard #6 Richard Williams married Sarah Hunt in Green Co. 29 May 1807. Richard #7 b. abt 1800-1810 Census for 1840 indicates living in Grainger Co. p. 102. Richard #8 b. abt 1808 according to lds information film 447919. Married Minerva or Minervy Criswell in Blount Co, TN 1 Jan 1833, Sistler, Early East Tennessee Marriages. Moved to Bell Co. TX in the 1840's. Buried near Troy Tx in Old Howard Cemetery according to information posted on the web. My ancestor Richard W. Williams b. abt 1779 to 1782 in North Carolina. Probably married by 1804 and living in Tennessee. On 14 May 1815 he had a son, Freeborn (F.C.) Williams in Sevier Co. Shortly thereafter he and his family were living in Blount County. By 1850, he and his grown families moved to Union County GA. He is listed in the 1850 Union Co. GA census p. 271 in an entry above F.C.’s household and N.K. Williams’s household, a probable other son. In the 1860 Union County GA census p. 471, he is living with F.C. (erroneously listed as C.C. Williams). F.C. later moved to Cotulla, Texas and died 14 Mar 1895. I have not found Richard in the 1870 census or fixed the date or location of his death. The weight of the evidence is that my ancestor is Richard #3. Richard #1 is a little too old and did not seem to have ever left Blount County. Richard #2 is also a little too old and may have been born in the wrong state. Richard #4 is a little too young and left for Indiana when my Richard was still known to be living in east Tennessee. Richard #5 - too young. Richard #6 - the marriage is a little too late. Richard #7 was in Grainger at a time when I know my Richard was in Blount County. Richard #8 left for Texas; not Georgia. Richard #3 was born within the right range of years. He was born in the right state. The probable marriage date and disownment match. Other east Tennessee Richard Williams references of note: In Burns, “History of Blount County, Tennessee” there is a mention of a Richard Williams, who is identified as a Quaker, who was an Abolitionist in pre-war Blount County. In 1798 a Richard Williams, Blount Co. gave a marriage bond. Likely Richard #1. The 1800 and 1801 Tax Roll indicate a Richard Williams living in Blount Co. Likely Richard #1. In 1825 Richard Williams, Grainger Co. gave a marriage bond. The 1840 Blount Co. census p.103 has a Richard Williams head of household. 000010001000-000000001000.

Mike McManness has done a great job hosting this list and the GenConnect query boards (now merged with Ancestry's message boards) for quite some time. Recently, however, he asked if I'd like to take on the administration of both the list and the boards. I happily concurred, with the thought that we'd make the administrator be the Sevier County Heritage Museum, where we have more volunteers to ease the load a bit. Please join me in thanking Mike for all his hard work to promote the local and family history of Sevier County. And, please come pay a virtual visit to the Museum's site at http://www.korrnet.org/schm -- we're under heavy on-line construction right now -- adding lots of new material, including photos, transcriptions, and a secure on-line method for ordering books and other materials from our shop. Sevier County Heritage Museum is a recognized non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its mission is to preserve and display historical information and artifacts from the county's 200+ year history. Admission is free. Our current special exhibit is on the Korean War and local veterans. A calendar of upcoming events and some exhibits is on our site. Billie McNamara, President Sevier County Heritage Museum
>From Paul Buford Fancher's book "Richard Fancher (1700-1764) of Morris County, New Jersey" Page 61, John Fancher was born in 1792 in Tennessee, probably Sevier County, and died April 26, 1864 in Noxubee County, Mississippi. He married Susan Haggard, daughter of Revolutionary Soldier Henry Haggar of Virginia, who married first Jack Clabough. Mrs. Fancher was the sister of Nancy Haggard wife of James S. I am trying to get as complete a list of John Lindsey and Elizabeth Atchley descendants as possible. Is anyone on the list researching this Sevier County line? Also, does a man named Isaac Allen Lindsey of Sevier Co show up in anyone's database. Born circa 1890-1910, he had a son named Lloyd Lindsey, born Jan 1930 and died Feb 1996 in Sevierville, TN. This Lindsey line supposedly had many generations in Sevierville so the odds are in their favor of either being descendants of the John and Elizabeth Lindsey line or the Jesse Lindsey/Salina Ivey line. Thanks a bunch for any help! Diana

Hi Everyone, Thought this might be of interest and wanted to share it with you. Here's what has been recently added to the "Tennessee and the Civil War" Site ***Confederate Memorial Rolls - Taken from Lindsley's "Military Annals of Tennessee - Confederate". It lists of some of the Confederates who died during the Civil War. In most cases, it gives the veteran's name, death date, and place where he died. The database is only 2/3 complete. Presently there are 5000+ names in the database. Additional names will be added as they are typed. Unfortunately, it does not list where the veteran is buried. ***Virtual Military Cemetery - The Virtual Military Cemetery has grown to contain nearly 900 photos. These new items have been linked from the main page. http://www.tngenweb.org/civilwar/index.html#new Happy Hunting, Mitzi P. Freeman I hope this information helps. Hi Everyone, In view of the serious outbreak of BadTrans.B, please give this post your utmost attention! Killing BadTrans.B is urgent business. Thanks for your help! I have gotten e-mail indicating that people do *not* understand this virus that has a very high penetration rate and is successful in the payload. The Bad Trans virus ran rampant through the maillist subscribers. The virus is undetectable in some instances because it is embedded in HTML. According to virus experts, more devious ways of hiding the virus in email messages will take place in the future. Please take a few minutes to educate yourself, you *will* be glad you did. Beware Badtrans.B http://techupdate.zdnet.com/techupdate/stories/main/0,14179,2825280,00.html Question...... but is it really necessary to unsub a virus infected person from our maillist? After all, the virus messages aren't coming through our lists, but are being sent to individual members who probably posted to the list(s) at some time back in the past. So, isn't unsubbing them sort of a "moot" point? Hasn't the "damage" already been done? Answer...... Let me answer your basic question and add a bit of historic perspective, since after all, genealogy is a branch of history. RootsWeb servers are Unix based and can *NOT* pass the virus. It is impossible! You can *NOT* get a virus from a RootsWeb mailing list but you *CAN* get the virus from a RootsWeb mailing list *SUBSCRIBER* by posting to the mailing list. This is confusing. The subscriber's computer, in some circumstances, then takes your message from it's inbox or your e-mail address from their address book and passes the virus to you. I hope I have made this issue clearer for you. It is very confusing until you understand the ins & outs, contributing circumstances and how everything works. Unsubbing an infected subscriber has a limited use, but that use *can* be important. I do it when the infection is by a worm that replies to real messages, such as the latest bug, BadTrans.B. By unsubscribing the infected address, one at least prevents *new* messages from the list going to the infected computer, and creating even *more* infected replies. You correctly stated, replies created by BadTrans do *NOT* go *through* the list. Yet they give the appearance to the unwary that they have. In any event, unsubbing the infected computer protects people who send messages through the list from *some* off-list problems. It all depends on which virus the person is infected with. Most virii it wouldn't make any difference. However, BadTrans (both the original and the B version) send themselves out to posters on a list, if there are any infected subscribers on the list, making it appear that the virus is coming from the list or even from a board if the list is gatewayed to a board. Therefore, I strongly recommend unsubbing people who are reported as being infected with this virus and notifying them that they need to clean their machines before resubbing. Point them to some useful URLs to get updated AV software or information. The removal procedure protects subscribers computers. In my opinion, if a list admin unsubs someone for this reason, he or she takes on a certain responsibility to follow up with an offer of help (if only to point to useful sources of information). One also needs to make sure that the victim doesn't end up in Reject File forever, for a problem that has been cleaned up. Last spring, around April, Badtrans Senior was released and due to the characteristics of that particular virus's behavior it spread like wildfire through the list subscribers. Some lists reported 25% of the subscribers were infected. None of us like to unsub people but it was literally at the point on many lists that unsubbing was the only way to stop the virus from spreading to everyone. From a subscribers point of view, they would post to a list and get one or more well disguised viruses in return. Needless to say, posts to the lists were greatly reduced. And there were numerous rumors that the virus was being spread through Rootsweb (not true but appeared true to subscribers). It's probably fair to say that a few list owners unsub for just a run of the mill virus. Its probably also fair to say that Badtrans affects lists very adversely and those of us that were around last spring, have absolutely no desire to repeat that experience in any way, shape or form. * Avoiding virus infections: Viruses and other malicious software, like worms and Trojan horses, are an unfortunate fact of online life, and there's no sign that they're going away. But you can avoid becoming a victim by keeping a few safety tips in mind: - Make sure you have up-to-date anti-virus software installed on your computer. Check the Web site of your software manufacturer for any software updates. Some anti-virus programs can be configured to check for updates automatically. - Treat all email attachments with extreme caution, even if they appear to be sent from people you trust. Some worms email themselves using their victim's address book, so that even people you trust may unknowingly email infected files to you. - Keep up with virus news. Learn about the latest threats by periodically visiting sites like Symantec Security Response at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ * "Badtrans" worm infects computers: Experts are warning Windows users to beware of an Internet worm that can record and transmit its victims' keystrokes, potentially exposing private information like passwords and credit card numbers. http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/internet/11/26/badtrans.worm/ Get the technical details about the "Badtrans" worm at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@mm.html For those who are struggling in the BadTrans virus arena, there is a FREE FIX from Symantec... the [VIRUS] W32.Badtrans.B@mm Removal Tool! So please post your virus concerns to the Virus Discussion List and get those infected computers cleaned up!! Rootsweb has a virus discussion list to help people learn about virii and how to best protect your computer. The virus discussion list will assist those that have been infected or have seen unusual issues and think they may be infected with the "Badtrans.B" virus or one of its variants.
