Took a look at the pictures on the website you mentioned below. Thanks so much! I have family that lived in the Webb Creek area, the Tysons and Lindseys. Just terrific to see pics of their area! I hope to make the drive through there one day. You can find it using the oft-neglected feature of www.google.com to search for images. Go to www.google.com Above the query box that naturally appears, click images. Enter Emerts Cove (only). You will get one picture. Click on the picture and you will go to a website (unspecified) with several more pictures. You will get a divided screen (top/bottom). To see a large version of the picture Click on the thumbnail print of the picture in the array at the bottom. And it will appear on the second half. The description is at the bottom. You can make a copy of the picture by right clicking on it and copying it to a picture file, etc. Other pictures in that file are Indian Gap, Newfound Gap, Mount Le Conte, Pittman Center, and other places. These should give you an idea of what the land was like for anybody who didn't live on that prime little piece of land in the picture of Emerts Cove. This summer I drove east from Maryville in Blount County on 411, through Sevier County, switching to 321 at Newport, then through Cocke, through Greene on 321 all the way to Johnson City, taking several side trips. The whole time I kept shaking my head wondering how exactly did the two different sets of families I have (one around Cosby, the other Rheatown/Limestone vicinity) even make a go of it there for the 60 or 80 years they respectively were there??? (1780s-1880s). It was absolutely gorgeous, breathtaking in every sense of the way to be "in the shadow of the Smokies". FYI, they ended up on the northern edge of the Ozarks in Missouri, where there are still hills (vs. shall we say Illinois near Chicago), but they are relatively gentle and at least you don't have to be part mountain goat to plant your fields. Of course, they might have been easier to clear in TN since the larger tree trunks would just roll down the hillside <grin> if you were lucky, FYI, I had gone through the Ozarks from SW Missouri (Lawrence/Dade Co) to Ruston LA and back up again, all the while staying off the interstate and as close to the ridge roads as I could get. It would beautiful, but just not quite up to the Smoky standard. Hope you enjoy the pictures! Families of interest. Cocke/Sevier-- Williams, Murrell, Lax, (collaterals --Henry, Ross, Bird, Jobe, McKissack). Greene/Washington -- Fortner, Chambers, Horton, Mullins, Martin, Sexton, DeFord, Marshall, Doane (too many collaterals for this crew to mention). Could someone please tell me how the Evans are related to the Emerts family? My grandmother was born in Emerts Cove, TN in 1898 and said that the hills were so steep that her dad had to hand plow the fields as a mule or horse could not be used for plowing. Her dad would then poke a hole with a long stick, and she would follow along behind dropping in the corn. Needless to say, they moved away to flatter land which was easier to farm. If anyone has any pictures of the area, I would love to see them. Thanks so much for any help you can give about the Evans-Emerts connection and any pictures that may be sent! Hello Everyone, I am trying to determine if there is an abstract book for North Carolina land grands in TN (and I KNOW there are several in many forms)..... That has a geographical/physical index of places named in the early land grants? (looking for Clear Creek and Buffalo Creek...realize these are two DIFFERENT locations) Thanks in advance, Janet Hunter
Pioneer settlers arrived in present-day Knox, Jefferson, Cocke, Hamblen, and Sevier Counties shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War. Today, it's hard to imagine what foods they ate, what clothes they wore, and what their lives were like in general. On Sunday, March 24, 2002, modern citizens of this area can learn about the original settlers from Robert McGinnis, site director of Knoxville's James White's Fort. McGinnis is an expert in pre-statehood East Tennessee history. Donning period-appropriate costumes and using antique artifacts as props, he recreates pioneer characters in lectures around the region. Mr. McGinnis will give his presentation from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Sevier County Heritage Museum, 167 E. Bruce Street (old post office), Sevierville. The public is invited, and there is no charge for admission. In addition to the talk by Mr. McGinnis, costumed members of the John Sevier Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution will be available to answer questions and demonstrate the use of period artifacts. For more information about the event or the Museum, call 865-453-4058 or visit on-line at http://www.korrnet.org/schm/

There's a virus message floating around lately with the subject of Microsoft Security Update, or something similar. It sends an attached file for you to click on and "update" your system. This is a virus-infected file. DO NOT click on it. Microsoft doesn't send out messages to the general public like this. You either have to join a techie-type mailing list or check their web site for update information. Remember to keep your virus definitions updated, and you should be fairly safe.
