A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at the Cumberland Room at the Oak Ridge Mall. Box 4021, Oak Ridge, TN 37831; or to a charity of the donor's choice. John McGhee, 81, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at Briarcliff Health Care Center. Born November 15, 1921 in Elk Valley, he was the son of John and Martha Martin McGhee, both now deceased. Mr. McGhee was retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division where he worked as a shipping and receiving clerk at the Y-12 Plant. He was a member of Heritage Fellowship Church and the American Legion, Atomic City Post No. 199. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. His family said he loved to travel and to take part in the activities of his church. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy "Dot" Smith McGhee; his son, Carlos McGhee of Fort Myers, Fla.; his daughter, Diane Ritter of Oak Ridge; one brother, Bartley McGhee and his wife, Derushia, of Newcombe; his niece, Andrea McGhee of Oak Ridge; four grandchildren, Terry McGhee and his wife, Farah, Michael McGhee and his wife, Jennifer, and Karah Ritter, all of Oak Ridge, and Chris McGhee and his wife, Cassandra, of Fort Myers; and five great grandchildren, Brady, Caleb, Tyler, Carson and Logan McGhee. The funeral was at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Heritage Fellowship Church with the Rev. Fred Garmon officiating. A graveside service was to be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 12, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Weatherford Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. STORY:Billy Basler, 66, of Morgan County, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at his home. Born September 12, 1936, in Morgan County, he was the son of Clarence Basler, Sr. and Wilma Cooper Basler. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Beechfork Holiness Church and a retired mechanic of Beaudry Ford in Atlanta, Ga. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie Basler, and his brother, Gary C. Basler. Mr. Basler is survived by his wife, Claudine Basler; two daughters, Cynthia Harris and her husband, Daniel, of Penson, Ala., Angela Lawson and her husband, Michael, of Dyersburg; three sons, Perry Basler of Cleveland, Michael Basler and his wife, Pamela, of Wartburg, and Russell Basler and his wife, Brenda, of Penson, Ala.; three brothers, Jerry Basler of Wartburg, Larry Basler of Atlanta, and Clarence Basler, Jr. of Wartburg; three sisters, Betty Williams of Oliver Springs, Linda Turpin of Wartburg, and Sharon Patterson of Oak Ridge; and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Herman Woods officiating. Raymond Massengale, 83, of Coalfield, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at his home. He was born September 19, 1919, in Coalfield, the second of eight sons of Hobert and Ora Edmonds Massengale. He was a lifelong resident of Morgan County. He was a retired maintenance worker and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Clinton. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Massengale, the Rev. Frank Massengale, James Massengale and the Rev. Earl Massengale. Survivors include three brothers, Rubert "Rube" Massengale, Leon Massengale and Ed Massengale, all of Coalfield; and several nieces and nephews. Ivis and Judy Slone of Coalfield are considered special friends. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Ernestine Mahan Nevils, 77, of Matthews, N.C., and formerly of Oak Ridge, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at her home after a lengthy illness. Born January 31, 1926, in Alcoa, she was one of eight children born to Ernest Jefferson and Vesta Standridge Mahan. She was a devoted wife and lovely mother and grandmother who loved homemaking and especially enjoyed gardening, her family said. She was a faithful member of Christ Covenant Church and enjoyed the Hosanna's fellowship while in Matthews. She was al longtime member of Central Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Monroe Nevils in 1995, and two brothers and a sister, Eugene Mahan, John "Bud" Mahan and Virginia Mahan Ousley. Mrs. Nevils is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne N. and Michael S. Moore, of Matthews; three grandchildren, Kelly Elizabeth, Katherine Anne and James Michael Moore, all of Matthews; her sister, Dorothy Reeves, of Memphis; and three brothers, Douglas Mahan, Harold Mahan and Raymond Mahan, all of the Knoxville area. The funeral was to be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Burial will follow. He was born May 15, 1926, in Campbell County, lived in Scott County for 21 years and moved to Oliver Springs in 1959. He was a retired construction worker and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Louisa Kennedy Carroll; his daughter, Julie Adell Carroll; and his brother, Robert Seiber. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Nina Carroll; four daughters, Edna Ruth McCarter and her husband, Steve, Regina Sue Carroll, Maria Claudell Carroll and Teresa Ann Breeden and her husband, Lawrence, all of Oliver Springs; three sons, Glenn Allen Carroll and his wife, Debbie, of Harriman, Robert Lewis Carroll and David Edward Carroll and his wife, Sharon, all of Oliver Springs; a brother, Andy Carroll, of Caryville; and 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A graveside service was to be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at Indian Creek Cemetery of Oliver Springs with the Rev. Garvan Green officiating. Sharp Funeral Home of Oliver Springs was in charge of the arrangements. Frederick August Scheer, Jr., 86, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at Shannondale Health Care Center in Knoxville. Born February 19, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo., he was the first child of Frederick August Scheer Sr. and Marie Delhougne Scheer, both now deceased. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert, and his wife, Alice. Mr. Scheer graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1983, with a degree in chemical engineering. He worked for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Mich., first in the paper mill and then at the glass plant until his retirement in 1973. In 1978, he and his wife moved to Claxton to be near their first grandson, Carl. The family said Mr. Scheer was an avid gardener who grew beautiful roses and luscious blackberries, and he planted a yard full of now stately trees in Claxton. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and toured many parts of the United States and the rest of the world. Until the onset of dementia, the family said he had a photographic memory and the ability to perform complex mental calculations at stunning speeds. As his dementia robbed him of his past and his extreme intellectual gifts, he settled into an endless present, but remained the decent, hardworking man he had always been. A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, in the chapel of Martin Funeral Home. The family requests that no flowers be sent and suggests that people who knew him remember Mr. Scheer by performing anonymous acts of kindness.
