Qualls, 70, formerly of the Marlow community Cleteth Byrge, 43, of Coalfield, Mary Louise "Betsey" Burkhart Hutton, 83, of Kingston, ===================================== Paul Jacob Shaffer, 77, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at his home. He was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Williams County, Ohio, son of the late Clayton and Clela Geesey Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer retired from Anderson's Hilltop Market where he worked as a meat cutter. He had also worked in stores in the former Pine Valley area of Oak Ridge and at Turner's IGA in the Edgemoor Community. He was a member and deacon of Glenwood Baptist Church and a member of Faith Masonic Lodge No. 756 and Kerbela Temple. His church and his family were very important to him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty June Meadows Shaffer, who died June 13, 1999; and by a sister, Vivian Oyer. Mr. Shaffer is survived by a son, John Paul Shaffer of Palm Harbor, Fla.; two step-daughters, Sandra Lucius Morris and husband, Tom, of Rockwood and Betty Reynolds Crotty and husband, Don, of Harriman; five grandchildren, Terry Reynolds and wife, Joan, of Gurley, Ala., Larry Reynolds of Woodstock, Va., Kristen Lucius Shappert and husband, Christ, of Suwannee, Ga., David Lucius and his fiancé, Heather, of Oak Ridge and James Shaffer of Clearwater, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Adela and Allysa Reynolds of Gurley, Ala. A Masonic service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2003, at Weatherford Mortuary led by members of Faith Masonic Lodge No. 756. The funeral will follow with the Rev. Hershel Chevallier officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to Glenwood Baptist Church, 200 S. Alabama Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. James Taylor Barker, 77, of Oak Ridge, died of congestive heart failure Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at his home. Born Aug. 10, 1925, on the family farm in the Claxton Community in McMinn County, he was the son of James Arthur and Viola Shamlin Barker, both now deceased. He started working for Tennessee Eastman in 1944 in the Isotope Separation Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory located at the Y-12 Plant. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1945 during World War II. He retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in 1982 after 37 years of service, where he worked as a chemist in the Isotope Separation Division. He also worked as sales manager for Trico Motor Co. and Fox Oldsmobile for many years. He and his wife, Edna Droke Barker, by whom he is survived, were married in 1943. His family says he loved golfing and was an avid golfer at the Oak Ridge Country Club and Centennial Golf course. In recent years he was a ranger and a starter at Centennial Golf Course. He loved gospel music and enjoyed going to gospel performances. He was a member of Double-Springs Baptist Church in the Claxton Community. His family said he loved his family, was a wonderful husband and father, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, Leslie Barker, Lee Barker, Charles Arthur Barker, Nellie Faye Barker and Ruth Barker Blankenship, and by three brothers-in-law, Louis Blankenship, Newt Riden and W.J. Dilbeck. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Mr. Barker is survived by three children, Janice Barker Moody and husband, Rex, of Ten Mile, Terry A. Barker and wife, Kaye, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and J. Richard Barker and wife, Martha, of Oak Ridge; and four grandchildren, Jason Barker and Clay Barker, both of Chapel Hill, and Lindsey Barker and Greg Barker, both of Oak Ridge. He is also survived by six sisters, Flora Barker Teague and husband, Charles, Mildred Barker Riden, Minnie Barker Dilbeck, Violet Barker Rogers and husband, Charles, Alice Barker Weaver, and Agnes Barker Dixon and husband, Austin; two sisters-in-law, Maude Barker and Esta Lee Barker; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral was Thursday, May 15, 2003, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve McDonald, minister of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. A graveside service was to be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Zora Fox Penland, 88, of Lenoir City, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a charter member of First Christian Church of Oak Ridge, where she served as church clerk for many years. She was also a member of Eastern Star Chapter No. 390, Women's Club Arts and Craft Section, 43 Club, Oak Ridge Republican Club and a volunteer at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was a former employee of the Oak Ridge Post Office, and credit manager of Loveman's and Anderson County Adjustment Co. Ms. Penland was preceded in death by her parents, B.W. and Rachel Melvina Fox; her husband, Henry Earl Penland; two brothers, Leslie Fox and Fred Fox; and a sister, Anna Ruth Goan. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Grayson of Lenoir City; two grandsons, Mark Grayson of Knoxville and Todd Grayson and wife, Beth, of Hendersonville; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City with the Rev. Mark Gooden officiating. Qualls, 70, of Tazewell and formerly of the Marlow community, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Claiborne County Hospital in Tazewell. He was born May 8, 1933, in Anderson County, the son of Samuel William Qualls and Hassie England Qualls. He was employed at Cumberland Mountain Industries Work Shop of Tazewell. He was a Baptist. He was preceeded in death by his parents; a brother, Buford Qualls and by a sister, Helen Kirby. Mr. Qualls is survived by a brother, Doug Qualls and his wife, Carol, of Oliver Springs; and by a sister, Thresa Langley and husband, Fred, of Rockwood. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Anderson Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Luke Kidwell officiating. Sharp Funeral Home of Oliver Springs is in charge of arrangements. Cleteth Byrge, 43, of Coalfield, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at his home. He was a 1978 graduate of Coalfield High School and was employed by Brushy Mountain State Prison for 22 years. He was an active member of the International Isshinryu Karate Association. He dedicated 18-plus years of his life to learning and teaching traditional Isshinryu karate. He was chief instructor and founder of Tri-County Isshinryu Karate School in Oliver Springs. He was instructed by the late Master Harold Long and was under the instruction of Master Tommy True in Harriman. He had attained the rank of Go-Dan (5th degree black belt). He leaves behind many students that he served as a mentor to. He also leaves behind his friend and fellow Karate-Ka of many years, Bill Duncan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Obal and Rebecca Byrge, paternal grandparents, Mike and Sarah Byrge and maternal grandparents, Bill and Myrtle Morgan. Mr. Byrge is survived by his wife of 24 years, Robin Patterson Byrge; a son, Brad Byrge of Coalfield; a sister, Elaina Byrge Dukes and husband, Allen; two brothers, Bill Byrge and wife, Rhonda, and Sean Byrge and wife, Sabrina, all of Wartburg; three nephews, Shane Hooks, Chris Byrge and Jessy Byrge; and two nieces, Caylin Dukes and Morgan Byrge. His family said he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, May, 16, 2003, in the chapel of Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg with Chaplain Donnie Moore officiating. Mary Louise "Betsey" Burkhart Hutton, 83, of Kingston, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at the home of her son, Philip Hutton, in Louisville. Mrs. Hutton had lived with her son and his family since the fall of 2001. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Harriman, and her family said her quiet, gentle and loving spirit was a blessing to everyone whose life she touched. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Charles Hutton, and two sons, Michael Fred Hutton and James Lewis Hutton. In addition to her son, Philip, and his wife, Diane Glass Hutton, Mrs. Hutton is survived by four other sons, Gerald Hutton and John Thomas Hutton and his wife, Catharine Asmah Hutton, all of Oak Ridge, Anthony Charles Hutton and his wife, Judy McNamer Hutton, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Robert Edward Hutton and his wife, Patricia, of Knoxville. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Naomi Louise Ajiku Hutton Hickerson and her husband, Shawn, Rebekah Jane Odamea Hutton, Susanna Betty Anakwa Hutton, Carla Noel Hutton and her husband, David Faris, Zachary Michael Hutton, Zoe Elaine Hutton, Robert Edward Hutton II, Jacob Eli Hutton, John William Hutton, James Louis Hutton and Charles Edward Hutton; and by her great-grandson, Preston Alexander Hickerson.
