    2. >From The Oak Ridger 11 Dec 2003 Naomi Elizabeth Dougherty, 82, Patricia Lee Day, 73, of Oak Ridge, Jean Mars Herndon, 81, of Oak Ridge, John Henry Robinson, 69, Victor John Schorn, 82, of Clinton, Nancye Lea Vandekamp, 64, of Oak Ridge, Naomi Elizabeth Dougherty, 82, Monroe Stout Jr., 47, of Oak Ridge, ========================================= Patricia Lee Day, 73, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at her home, of congestive heart failure. Born July 28, 1930, in Galveston, Texas, she was the daughter of Eugene and Clara Hayden Jackson. Mrs. Day was a high school graduate and attended the University of Texas. She was a homemaker and an Episcopalian. Her family said her hobbies included jewelry making, gardening, stained glass and cooking. According to her family, Mrs. Day was very involved in her church's activities including Daughters of the King Junior Warden, Scout Mistress, youth work, Vestry, Kitchen Guild, a Sunday school teacher, and a memorial garden caretaker and she helped plan and create a memorial garden. She also did childcare at her home after raising five children of her own. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Day; two brothers-in-law, Harry L. Day and Jim H. Day; and by a sister-in-law, Millie Jackson. Mrs. Day is survived by her husband, Jack R. Day; a son, Richard Day-Reynolds and wife, Lori, of McMinnville, Ore.; three daughters, Lois Day and life partner, Betsy Fairlamb, of Eugene, Ore., Paddy Day of Oak Ridge, and Katie Day of Springfield, Ore.; and by three grandchildren, Lennon Day-Reynolds and Robert Day-Reynolds, both of Portland, Ore., and Stephanie Day-Goodman of Eugene. She is also survived by a brother, Hedley Jackson, of Houston, Texas, and his sons, Alan Jackson and wife, Susan, and their children, Scott and Christian, and Steve Jackson and wife, Randa, and their children, Brian, Kyle and Emma. Her family said everyone she knew are considered special friends. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Craig Kallio and the Rev. Claire Keene officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to Makindu Children's Center, Africa/St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 212 N. Tulane Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830, or Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County, 85 Kentucky Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. A celebration of life will be from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Monday at her home. Jean Mars Herndon, 81, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, after a brief illness. Born Aug. 24, 1922, in LaFollette, she was the daughter of C.W. Mars and Claudia Grace Alexander Mars. After attending business school in Chillicothe, Ohio, she was employed by Fleet Oil Co. During World War II, Mrs. Herndon held a secretarial position in the inspector general's office in Washington, D.C. After the war, she accepted a position with Newsome Motor Co., a Kaiser-Frazier automobile agency in Bradenton, Fla., where she met and married her husband. While her husband attended the University of Florida, Mrs. Herndon held the position of secretary to the head of the Department of Architecture and Allied Arts. After her husband's graduation in 1950, the couple moved to Oak Ridge, where he accepted an engineering position with Union Carbide Corp. They have resided in Oak Ridge continuously for 53 years. During the early years, 1950 to 1974, in Oak Ridge, Mrs. Herndon concentrated on rearing her family and was active in the Campfire Girls organization and school activities. From 1974 until retirement in 1993, she held the position of business manager at the Emory Valley Center. According to her family, Mrs. Herndon was a loving and caring wife and mother, and her memory will be cherished forever in the hearts of her family and friends. Her family said she had many and varied interests that she embraced enthusiastically. She was an avid sports fan especially for the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball team and professional women's tennis tournaments. She and her husband faithfully attended UT football games for many years. They were also accomplished ballroom dancers and were members of several local dance clubs over the years. Her family said travel was another special love of hers. She and her husband traveled extensively in the United States and abroad to places of interest and attended his military reunions held throughout the country. Her family said Mrs. Herndon loved reading and was an avid collector of many different items such as postage stamps, coins, LladrĂ³ ceramics figures and Dickens Village. According to her family, the Christmas season each year was a special time in her life. Throughout the year, she carefully selected just the right gift for each family member and friend and personally wrapped each one. She shunned Christmas form letters and composed personal handwritten letters each year to long-time friends. Mrs. Herndon is survived by her husband of 55 years, Preston G. Herndon; four daughters, Gail Fennimore and husband, Tom, of Charlotte, N.C., Caryl Hall and husband, John, of Troutman, N.C., Leigh Baron of Tipp City, Ohio, and Gwen Herndon of Charlotte; nine grandchildren, Blair Fennimore, Keenan Fennimore, John Hall Jr., Gregory Hall, Trevor Baron, Chelsea Baron, Cullen Baron, Antonia Herndon and Alexander Herndon; a sister, Helen Davenport, of Stormlake, Iowa; and by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Cantrell officiating. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Emory Valley Center Foundation, 715 Emory Valley Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Cremation Options Inc. is in charge of arrangements. John Henry Robinson, 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, after an extended illness. His family said he had looked forward to the day that the Lord would take him to his glorious home in heaven. Born June 7, 1934, in Oliver Springs, he was the son of Reuben H. and Joe Anna Smith Robinson. Mr. Robinson was a lifelong resident of Anderson County and was a 1953 graduate of Oliver Springs High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean conflict. Mr. Robinson was president of the Norwood Boy's Club from 1967 to 1972. He was employed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Union Carbide and Martin Marietta Energy Systems for many years and medically retired from Martin Marietta in 1986. His fmaily said he enjoyed working with the youth at Norwood Boy's Club and farming. After retiring, his family said, he enjoyed gardening and watching his grandchildren play. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J.B. Robinson; and by a brother, Billy J., and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Minnie Janiel, who died as infants. Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Winona "Winnnie" Robinson, of Oliver Springs; a stepson, Richard D. Gray and wife, Judy, of Oliver Springs; a son, Michael H. Robinson, of Oliver Springs; a daughter, Michelle Lisenbee and husband, Joe, of Oliver Springs; and by three grandchildren, James Gray, Jordan A. Ledford and Joseph Keathley-Lisenbee. He is also survived two sisters, Blanna J. Smith and husband, Bill, of San Marcos, Calif., and Ruth E. Freels and husband, Ben, of Baltimore, Md.; his uncle, Harold Smith and wife, Mary Kate, of the Batley community; four nieces, Barbara Dykes and husband, Kenny, of Riverside, Calif., Pam Merriam and husband, Bobby, of Escondido, Calif., Donna Smith of San Marcos, and Dewan Lamb and husband, Gary, of Knoxville; a nephew, Roger Smith, of San Marcos; three sisters-in-law, Wilma Cooley and husband, Charles, of Oliver Springs, and Lillie Donald and Nora Crites and husband, Tommy, all of Oak Ridge; and by two brothers-in-law, John Donald and James Donald and wife, Linda, all of Oak Ridge. His family said he will be remembered and missed by many relatives and friends including Charles Ward and wife, Ethel, and Ray Patterson, who are considered his special friends. His family said he won the hearts of many nurses during his illness, to whom the family is especially grateful. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Luke Kidwell and the Rev. Dr. Billy Edmonds officiating. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Victor John Schorn, 82, of Clinton, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Feb. 3, 1921, in Long Beach, Calif., he was the son of John Schorn and Mary Wolkin Schorn. Mr. Schorn was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Clinton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from Tennessee Valley Authority as an instrument mechanic. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson. Mr. Schorn is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pauline Schorn; two daughters, Mary Schorn, of Oak Ridge, and Virginia Chandler and husband, Steve, of Anderson County; two sons, John Schorn and wife, Ethel, of Knox County, and Charles Schorn and wife, Desiree, of Dallas, Texas; and by seven grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers, Edwin Schorn, George H. Schorn, and Lewis Schorn, all of Colorado, and Raymond Schorn and wife, Geri, of Florida; a sister-in-law, Maryln Schorn, of Colorado; and by several nieces, nephews and extended family members. His family said he will be remembered by many friends. A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at St. Therese Catholic Church in Clinton with the Rev. Gerard Finucane officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. Nacy Lea Vanderkamp died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003. Born Feb. 3, 1939, in Knoxville she was the daughter of Herbert Moore and Martha McDonald Glen. Ms. Vandekamp retired from Kroger, where she worked as a courtesy clerk. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Her family said she enjoyed walking and spending time with her dog, Bandit. Ms. Vandekamp is survived by her sister, Mitzi Head and husband, Gary, of Hendersonville; her niece, Tracey Head Davanport and husband, Eric, of Atlanta, Ga.; her nephew, David Head, of Hendersonville; and by a grandniece, Cathryn Davanport, of Atlanta. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Duncan Rankin officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Naomi Elizabeth Dougherty, 82, formerly of Knoxville, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at the Life Care Center of Tullahoma. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete at press time. Monroe Stout Jr., 47, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at his home.
