WILLIAM TAFT - age 95, of LaFollette, MILLER, DAVID E. - age 80, of Oak Ridge, HILL, JAMES H. - HOUSE, DEBORAH KAYE - age 49 of Greeneville, formerly of Claxton, LINDA KAY PALMER - age 59, of Harriman, POWELL, LOUIS JACKSON - age 73, of Clinton, ========================================= ANDREWS, REV. WILLIAM TAFT - age 95, of LaFollette, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2003 at St. Mary's Medical Center of Campbell County. He was a member of Fincastle United Methodist Church. He served in Tennessee and Holston United Methodist Church Conference for 39 years, having served at Fincastle and Caryville United Methodist Church for 5 years, from 1952 to 1957. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed his grandchildren, gardening, music and being with people. He was so kind and thoughtful to all. Preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Mary Lee (Richardson) Andrews; his first wife, Edith Jarnigan Andrews; four brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ollie Teague Andrews of LaFollette; son and daughter-in-law, William Taft (Bill) Andrews, Jr. and wife, Missy Albright Andrews of Bradenton, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lee and Charles Adkins of Hendersonville; four grandchildren, Andy Adkins and wife, Melanie, of Murfreesboro, Charla Adkins of Franklin, TN, Lucas Taft of Andrews and Olivia Taylor Andrews of Bradenton, Fla.; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. The funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 24, 2003 at Fincastle United Methodist Church, Rev. Kevin Cole and Dr. David Lord officiating. Interment will be in Fincastle Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral service. Cross Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. MILLER, DAVID E. - age 80, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, December 22, 2003 at the Estates of Oak Ridge. He was born January 3, 1923, the son of Bertha McMurtery Miller of Philadelphia, TN and Robert Miller of Knoxville. Mr. Miller graduated from Knoxville Business College and worked for Burroughs of Birmingham, Alabama as an accountant. He then served in the US Army as a staff sergeant during WWII. He saw duty in Guadalcanal, the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. He moved to Oak Ridge in 1946 and became "one of 170 employees who served USAEC during its entire 36 year history from 1947-1974." Mr. Miller was Deputy Director of USAEC Contract Division upon his retirement. He was a member of Robertsville Baptist Church for 55 years, where he served as Deacon and he taught the junior boys Sunday School Class for many years. He was also a member of the Oak Ridge Lions Club. Mr. Miller loved his God, his family and his friends. He loved to sing and fish and was known for his sense of humor and absolute integrity. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Ann Rucker Miller of Oak Ridge, Daughter, Beverly Miller Meredith and her husband John Budd Meredith, Jr and Grandson, John Budd Meredith III, all of Roanoke, VA, Brother, John Miller and wife June, of Morristown, And many nieces and nephews. We will miss him terribly, but he is with Jesus now! Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 26, 2003 at 8:00pm at Weatherford Mortuary with Rev. Michael Prince officiating. Graveside services are Saturday at 1:00pm at Anderson Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Berdell Tolliver, Fred Kiser, Jay Stephens, Earl Smith, Howard Rosser, Dearl Lincoln, John B. Meredith, Jr. and John B. Meredith III. (www.weatherfordmortuary.com) HILL, JAMES H. - the son of Bevlia Pat Hill and Essie Regina Overstreet Hill of Chattanooga, TN grew up in the small town of Springville, Alabama. Hill and his wife Carolyn are members of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In the past he had been a member of the Legion of Mary, a coach of the school basketball team and a lector. Jim and Carolyn have 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. They are: Son, J. Christopher Hill and his wife Barbara of Oak Ridge and their children, Katie and Tim McCorkle, Andrew, Emily and Mark; Daughter, Emily Anthony (Toni) Lamb and her husband Dan of Knoxville, and their children, Mathew, Aaron, Rachel, Caroline and great-granddaughter Isabel; Son, Patrick Hill and his wife Nanette Johnson of Asheville, NC; Son, H. Michael Hill and his wife Martha Knisely and children Emma and Martin of Charlotte, NC and Son, Daniel S. Hill of Nashville. After graduating in 1940 from Central High School in Chattanooga, he attended the University of TN at Knoxville and in 1943 he joined the Army Air Corps. He graduated from the Selman Field Navigation School where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. After returning from the war, he attended the University of Chattanooga, from which he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He later attended Ohio State University, receiving a Master's Degree in Nuclear Chemistry / Physics. In 1964 he was elected to the Alpha Honorary Scholastic Society as a distinguished alumnus of the University of Chattanooga. During WWII, he served as a B-24 navigator with the 7th Bomb Group in the China - Burma - India Theater. A book entitled "The Navigator: Destroying the Railway of Death over the River Kwai" was written by him to relate the experiences of his crew and the 7th Bomb Group. After the war, Mr. Hill served with the Strategic Air Command in England and Japan. He received a number of military awards. During his career in the US Air Force, he graduated from the Command and General Staff School at the Air University. In 1951, he graduated from the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology and was assigned to the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (ANP) program. After that assignment, he was asked to serve as Special Assistant to AEC Commissioner Robert E. Wilson and later Special Assistant to Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, Chairman of the AEC in Washington, DC. Upon his retirement from the Air Force in 1965, he became Vice President for Corporate Planning of United Nuclear Corporation, then headquartered in Centreville, MD. Mr. Hill loved living in Oak Ridge and he and his wife first moved here in 1950. They have moved in and out of Oak Ridge three different times. The last time, they moved back was in 1971 when Jim was appointed Assistant Manager for Operations of the AEC. While later serving as Deputy Manager of DOE Oak Ridge Operations, he received the Special Achievement Award in 1979 and in 1980 the presidential award of Meritorious Executive in the Senior Executive Service. He retired from the DOE in 1984 and later worked as a technical consultant for a number of years. Mr. Hill was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Oak Ridge Country Club, serving on its board of directors as secretary and vice president. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 26, 2003 at 11:00am at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Michael Woods officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:30pm at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga with full military honors. The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to St. Mary's School or the Appalachian Chapter of the American Red Cross. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday morning from 9:00 - 11:00am. Weatherford Mortuary in charge of the arrangements. HOUSE, DEBORAH KAYE - age 49 of Greeneville, formerly of Claxton, passed away Monday, December 22, 2003 at Select Specialty Hospital in Tri-Cities. Born June 23, 1954, at Fort George G. Mead in Maryland, Deborah was a resident of Greene Valley Development Center. She was preceded in death by her mother, Wilma J. House and sister, Susan J. Evans. She is survived by her father and step mother, W.A. and Carolyn House of Claxton; brother, Michael L. House of Knoxville; birth father, Woodrow F. Evans of Knoxville. The family will receive friends at Woodhaven Funeral Home Friday, December 26, 2003 from 6-8 p.m. Graveside services will be held Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens. LINDA KAY PALMER - age 59, of Harriman, died Monday, December 22, 2003 at the Methodist Medical Center. Member of First Baptist Church of Kingston. Retired Vogue Hair Designs in Oak Ridge. Survived by: her husband of 40 years, Larry Rogers Palmer of Harriman; son, Gregory Scott Palmer and wife Beth; and daughter, Angela Renee Woullard and husband Mike, all of Oak Ridge; brothers, Kenneth Clabough and wife Harriett of Friendsville andDon Clabough and wife Phyllis of High Point, NC; mother-in-law, Maxine Bullard and husband Perry Washington Bullard of Clinton; and 5 grandchildren, Jordon and Haley Woullard, and Peyton, Preston and Parker Palmer. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 26, 2003 at Weatherford Mortuary at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Roy D. Graves officiating. Graveside services are Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. There will also be a 'Celebration of Life' on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike. (www.weatherfordmortuary.com) POWELL, LOUIS JACKSON - age 73, of Clinton, passed away Friday, December 19, 2003 at Ft. Sanders Parkwest Hospital. He was a member of Solway Baptist Church. Preceded in death by: wife, Alice Powell; mother, Delia Powell. Born June 15, 1930 in Anderson County. Survivors: daughters, Sharon Milen, Amy Seiber; son, Billy Powell, all of Clinton; brother, Leonard & wife Geneva Powell of Oliver Springs; grandchildren, Adam Milen, Daniel Seiber & Cody Dixon, all of Clinton. The family received friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2003 at Holley- Gamble Funeral Home with funeral services following in the Chapel with Rev. Marty Stooksbury officiating. The interment was at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Batley Cemetery.
