    2. >From The Oak Ridger 3 Dec 2003 Stanley Hugh Benson, 74, of Oak Ridge, Herbert "Hoover" Gann, 73, a lifelong resident of the area, Effie Hodge Bowden, 83, formerly of Oak Ridge, Dan John Nuhrah, 82, of Oak Ridge, Freddie Neal Wells, 74, ========================================= Stanley Hugh Benson, 74, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Oct. 1, 1929, in Sparta, Ill., he was the son of Edward Hugh Benson and Laurence Sanders Benson. Mr. Benson received his bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University. >From 1968 to 1970 he served as library director at Berry College in Rome, Ga., and from 1970 to 1984 he continued in that position at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla. He came to Carson-Newman College in 1985, where he was named dean of library services. Additionally, he taught in the religion departments of OBU and Carson-Newman. He retired in 1997. Mr. Benson was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. He was also a volunteer tax preparer for the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. His family said he was also a roller coaster enthusiast. Mr. Benson was the recipient of the Tennessee Baptist Heritage Award in 1993 and served as the first president of Tenn-Share from 1992 to 1994. Mr. Benson is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sara Elizabeth Collins Benson; two sons, Andrew Collins Benson and wife, Marianne, of Knoxville, and Raymond Edward Benson of Lebanon; and by his sister, Ruby Maisenbacher and husband, Ralph, of Groveland, Calif. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Larry Dipboye officiating. The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the White House Adult Home of Lebanon, c/o First Baptist Church, 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Herbert "Hoover" Gann, 73, a lifelong resident of the area, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Gann was a former deacon of Elverton Baptist Church. His family said he loved the Lord. According to his family, Mr. Gann was well-known in the area and he was also known as "dozer man," a longtime heavy equipment operator who took pride in his work. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Gann and Alice Adkins Gann; two brothers, Jack Gann and Earl Gann; and by a sister, Mae Lane. Mr. Gann is survived by his wife of 26 years, Patricia Justice Gann, of Oliver Springs; two daughters, Kathey Gann and husband, Gary Moore, of Chesnee, S.C., and Rebecca Day of Oliver Springs; and by four sons, Bryan Grizzle and fiancé, Joan Jorns, of Deer Lodge, Kevin Grizzle and wife, Kim, of Harriman, Mike Gann and wife, Becky, of Crossville, and Herbert Gann of Johnson City. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Jack Gann, Jenifer Day, Melinda Day, Ryan Day, Jesse Grizzle, Joshua Grizzle, Matthew Grizzle, Elijah Grizzle, Barbie Cooley and husband, Brian, Julie Ramsey and husband, John, Janet Myers and husband, Michael, and Jamie Grizzle and wife, Amanda; five great-grandchildren, Tanner Storey, Isaac Gann, Bailey Myers, Trenton Ramsey and Alexis Grizzle; a brother, J.M. Gann, of Harriman; a sister, Eula Newcomb and husband, Vestil, of Chattanooga; and by several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Johnny McGhee of Harriman is considered his best friend. The funeral will be at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Roger Buck, the Rev. Grover Adkins, and the Rev. Garvan Walls officiating. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Oliver Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Effie Hodge Bowden, 83, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, in Raleigh, N.C. Born in Mingo County in West Virginia, she was the daughter of Elijah Hodge and Nellie Francis Hodge. Mrs. Bowden lived in Holden, W.Va., until 1943, when she and her family moved to Oak Ridge, where her husband worked during World War II on the Manhattan Project. She then moved to West Memphis, Ark., in 1955, and later to Atlanta, Ga. While living in Arkansas, Mrs. Bowden managed the West Memphis Country Club, as well as The Kennel Club of the Southland Greyhound Park. She also managed the Olive Branch, Miss., Country Club, during that time. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Gatliff Bowden; a son, Jeffrey Bowden; and by a brother, Cecil Hodge and Ralph Hodge. Mrs. Bowden is survived by five children, Brenda Eichmiller and husband, John, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Robert Bowden and wife, JennyLen, of Atlanta, Melody Porter and husband, James, of Raleigh, Raymond Bowden and wife, Cynthia, of North Little Rock, Ark., and Amelia Scott and husband, Larry, of Montgomery, Ala.; her sister, Alma Hodge Walker, of Memphis; and by 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The body was cremated. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh. Burial will be at Crittenden Memorial Park in West Memphis with her husband and son. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Alzheimer's Association, Eastern North Carolina chapter, 400 Oberlin Rd., Raleigh, NC 27605. Dan John Nuhrah, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete at press time. Freddie Neal Wells, 74, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at Baptist Health System in Knoxville.
