THURMOND, ALICE MILES - WEBB, LULA MAE - age 89, of Oak Ridge, ============================================ COLEMAN, J.W., "BILL" - age 86, of Knoxville, passed away August 22, 2003. He was retired from Southern Railroad and New York Air Brake. He was a long-time resident of Andersonville, Tennessee. Survivors: wife, Sue Wakefield Coleman; children, Frieda and Ken Wilson, Kitty and Gene Eckert and Anne Conklin; 6 grandchildren; 6 great- grandchildren; step-children, Ken and Gaye Lay, Sheree and Jeff Jacoby, Donna and Steve Sumner, Peggy and Paul Sliger, Brenda and Ron Smith, Judy and Wayne Talley; 14 Step- grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Mynatt Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Jerry Tallent officiating. Special thanks to the staff of St. Mary's Residential Hospice. LOWE, ROLAND- age 74 of Smokey Junction, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at the Fort Sanders Park West Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Bessie Cook Lowe; 1 brother, Ewell Lowe; 1 sister, Vena Lowe; 1 son in law, Earl Sherritze; 1 daughter in law, Patty Jeffers Lowe; father in law, Andrew Cross; mother in law, Celia Cross. He joined River View Missionary Baptist Church on September 25, 1943. He served as custodian from October 10, 1959 thru August 1990. He was ordained as a Deacon on September 9, 1961. He was a member of the Oneida Masonic Lodge 695 F&AM, Scottish Rites, 32nd Degree Kerbela Temple of Knoxville, Tenn., Eastern Star 259. Roland was a loving husband and father. He worked in the trucking industry for numerous years and drove a school bus for 21 years. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maudie Cross Lowe; 1 daughter, Loretta Sherritze of Knoxville, Tenn.; 2 sons, Dennie Lowe and wife, Patsy, Dwayne Lowe and wife, Carol all of Oneida, Tenn.; 2 special grandsons, Travis Lowe and Blake Lowe; 1 step granddaughter, Leslie Struck and husband, Heath; 2 step great grandchildren, Dallan Phillips, Jaleigh Strunk; 2 special sisters, Irma Mason, Patricia Kay Lowe and husband, Larry of Smokey Junction, Tenn.; 1 special brother, Donald Lowe and wife, Joyce; 1 special nephew, Marvin Lowe and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 12 noon Saturday August 23, 2003 at the River View Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Dudley Harness and Bro. Ronald Massengale officiating. Music will be provided by the Mason Family. Burial will follow in the River View Cemetery. Pallbearers: Marvin Lowe, Ronnie Lowe, Randy Lowe, Larry Lowe, Kevin Lowe, Chad Lowe, Lonnie Lowe, Alex Lowe, Ray Lowe and Hedrick Mason. Honorary pallbearers: grandsons, Travis Lowe and Blake Lowe. Four Oaks Funeral Home of Huntsville is in charge of the funeral arrangements for the family of Roland Lowe. THURMOND, ALICE MILES - of Rockford, homegoing took place at dawn Thursday, August 21, 2003. She died at Ft. Sanders Hospital, Knoxville, after a brief illness. Alice was born to Eulian Malone Miles and Alice Swan Miles on February 26, 1919, in Thompson, Ga. The family later moved to Lake City, Fla., where she graduated Valedictorian from Lake City High School. She attended Florida State University for a term before flying to Puerto Rico to wed her fiancé, Kennet h, who had been assigned there with the U.S. Forestry Service. They lived comfortably in a stone house in the forest region near the great El Yunque Mountain range for two years before returning to the states to start their family. After a brief time in Washington, D.C. and Oxford, Miss.. with the Forestry Service, Ken took a job with TVA and the family moved to Norris, Tenn. During World War II, Ken was in the Pacific Theatre. Alice took the children to live in Lake City, Fla., with her newly widowed father until the war ended. Shortly after the war ended, Alice returned to Norris, Tenn., with her family. In 1956, they started a State Farm Insurance Agency and made their final move to Oak Ridge, Tenn., where they lived for 42 years. Charter member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Norris. Alice continued her dedicated involvement at St. Stephens, Oak Ridge, where she was President of the Altar Guild for several years. After the children left home, she volunteered as a Pink Lady at Oak Ridge Hospital. ,Lover of all things beautiful and domestically gifted, Alice exulted in her immediate and extended family life, excelling in cooking and canning from her annual garden, taking care of the home and entertaining for others. Her gifts of hospitality and generosity spilled over onto all who knew her. Memorable travels occurred in their camper. With it, Alice pursued her love of the water and visiting friends and family at Watts Bar Lake, took several trips out West and many trips to visit family in North Carolina, Gerogia, and Florida. Good health and a love of outdoors encouraged spring photography trips in search of elusive, rare wild flowers in their beloved Smokey Mountains. She continued to enjoy her church, friends, Bridge and reading in her later years. Alice is survived by two daughters, Pati Woodhull and husband, Alec of Rockford, Tenn., Aynn Gehron and husband, Dick of Charlotte, N.C.. She leaves love and laughter with her step mother, Del Miles of Lake City, Fla.; six grandchildren, Shelby Trusley, Lauren Clevenger, Kenny Woodhull, all of the Knoxville area, Rich Gehron of Wilmington, N.C., Ali Crotts and Jake Gehron of Charlotte, N.C.; eleven great-grandchildren and nephew, Mark Hopkins of Tallahassee, Fla.; one sister, Geraldine Hopkins is deceased. Memorial service 11 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Oak Ridge, Tenn., with the Rev. Dr. Craig Kallio officiating. Family and friends will meet at 12:45 p.m. Monday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery for a 1 p.m. graveside service. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. WEBB, LULA MAE - age 89, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, August 22, 2003, at Briarcliff Health Care Center. Retired from JC Penney, where she was a seamstress. Preceded in death by husband, Jesse R. Webb in 1986, and son, Robert Daniel Webb in 2000. Survived by son, Jesse William Webb and wife, Linda Gail of Oak Ridge; daughters, Hazel Crossno,, Mary Jo Cook and husband, Alfred F., and Phyllis K. Webb, all of Oak Ridge, and Emily Sue Helton and husband, William E. of Chattanooga; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great- great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary with Rev. Bobby Mullins officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday from Noon until 2:00 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge.
