SAVARESE, LEOLA I. - age 93, ============================================ BROWN, BUSTER ADAM - age 20, of Briceville, Tenn., passed away Sunday, August 10, 2003. Visitation 6:00- 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at the Hatmaker Funeral Home. Funeral service 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 14, 2003, at the Indian Bluff Baptist Church. Interment at the Brown Flat Cemetery, Briceville, Tenn. Hatmaker Funeral Home, in charge of arrangements. COMBS, STEPHANIE MARTITIA NAVE - age 85, resident of Morning Pointe Assisted Living in Clinton, died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at Windwood Nursing Home. Born August 12, 1917, in Shouns, Tenn. She graduated in 1940, from the University of Tennessee with a BS in Home Economics. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She taught Home Economics in Jamestown, Tenn., at Alvin C. York Institute, worked with Farm Security Administration as a Home Economist, and later as a teacher in Anderson County. She and her husband lived in Oak Ridge until retirement, when they moved to Mountain City, Tenn. She was a faithful member of Mountain City Presbyterian Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Norah Baker Nave; sisters, Maude Nave, Ruth Nave Rheinschild, Mae Nave, and Eula Nave Lowe. She is survived by her hsuband of 59 years, Wilburn Combs; son, Steven and wife, Bebe Combs of Clinton, and Douglas Combs of Knoxville; grandchildren, Melissa Combs Dyson and husband, Henry of Columbia, Mo., Meredith Combs Reed and husband, Marty of Nashville, Renee Combs of Johnson City, and Amy Combs of Knoxville; nephew, John and wife, Dara Lowe of Mountain City; nieces, Anne Lowe Blackwood of Durham, N.C., and Caroline Rheinschild Miller of Honolulu, Hawaii. Funeral services 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2003, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, with Minister Clarence Durham officiating. Interment in Baker family cemetery in Mountain City, Tenn., 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2003. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, memorials be made to Mountain City Presbyterian Church, Fairground Lane, Mountain City, TN 37683. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday. Gordon Mason, former All-American quarterback and long-time high school football coach in the East Tennessee area, died Thursday August 7, 2003, at University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital, following complications of heart transplant surgery. He was a native of Kingston. Mr. Mason was a stand- out quarterback for Tennessee Tech, gaining All-American honors and leading the Eagles to the Tangerine Bowl his Senior season. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears of the National Football League following his senior season in 1961. Over the next 30 years, Mr. Mason taught and coached at many high schools throughout the East Tennessee area, including Oliver Springs, Rockwood, Brainerd, Chattanooga Central, Soddy-Daisy, and Notre Dame and Ooltewah. He retired from coaching and teaching in 2001. Survivors include Pat Mason, his wife of 28 years, and five children. Sons, David Mason of Powder Springs, Ga., David Jones of Chattanooga, Michael Mason of Birchwood, Tenn., and Paul Mason of Birchwood, Tenn.; daughter Jeannine Jones of Birchwood, Tenn., and two grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for 12:00 Noon on Saturday, August 16, at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, Cleveland, Tenn. The church is located off I-75 at exit #25 in Cleveland. She was a graduate of The University of Tennessee. Leola taught Home Economics at Lake City High School and retired from Miami Edison High School in Florida. She is preceded in death by her husband, August Savarese; sisters, Lillian Winfrey, Mable Cannon and Peggy Kelly; brothers, Cliff Sharp, Homer Sharp and Tom Sharp. Survivors: daughter, Sandy Savarese of St. Louis, MO; nephews, Charles Winfrey of Lake City and C.A. Kelly of Knoxville; niece, Margaret Small of Knoxville. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at Hatmaker Funeral Home. A graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 14, 2003 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Lake City, TN with Rev. Brian Courtney officiating. Interment will follow the graveside service.
