Dorothy Lynn "Dot" Kidd Fischer, 77, of Oak Ridge, Nancy Ann Garrison, 80, of Oak Ridge, Benjamin "Ben" Douglas Nelson, 23, formerly of Oak Ridge, Alice Miles Thurmond, 84, of Rockford, Quentin Isaiah Etter, 2 months old, of Oak Ridge, ============================================ Lula Mae Webb, 89, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Briarcliff Health Care Center. Born Jan. 23, 1914, in Del Rio, she was the daughter of William Lewis Turner and Emmaline Cashen Turner, both now deceased. Mrs. Webb retired from J.C. Penney Co., where she was a seamstress. According to her family, her hobbies were quilting and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse R. Webb in 1986, and by a son, Robert Daniel Webb in 2000. Mrs. Webb is survived by a son, Jesse William Webb and wife, Linda Gail, of Oak Ridge; four daughters, Hazel Crossno, Mary Jo Cook and husband, Alfred F., and Phyllis K. Webb, all of Oak Ridge, and Emily Sue Helton and husband, William E., of Chattanooga; and by 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Bobby Mullins officiating. Burial followed at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Frances Wilma Mercer Alvey, 78, of Aiken, S.C., died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Born in Woodriver, Ill., she had lived in Aiken since 1999. Mrs. Alvey is survived by two daughters, Pamela Harmon and Brenda Anne Alvey; four grandchildren, Sandy Spence, Michelle Wallace, Alan Harmon and Becky Harmon; four great-grandchildren, Devin Gunkler, Jessie Gunkler, Jordan Wallace and D.J. Spence; a sister, Marie Bray of Oregon; and by a brother, Raymond Mercer of Alton, Ill. The funeral was to be at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, in the chapel of Shellhouse Funeral Home in Aiken with Alan Harmon officiating. Burial will follow later at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to a church or charity of the donor's choice. Dorothy Lynn "Dot" Kidd Fischer, 77, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at her home surrounded by her family. Born Dec. 7, 1925, in Knoxville, she was the daughter of Robert Lindsay Kidd and Hattie Carroll Kidd. In 1942, she married Alva Louis Fischer and the following year moved to Oak Ridge. Mrs. Fischer was a member of High Places Community Church and had been a longtime member of Central Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was a former teacher's aide at Daniel Arthur Rehabilitation Center and, with her husband, was the owner of Jackson Square Antique Shoppe. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and was voted their Girl of the Year in 1957. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Allen Fischer; a brother, Roy Lynn Kidd; and by a sister, Bonnie Kidd Watson. Mrs. Fischer is survived by her husband of 61 years, A.L. Fischer; four sons Dennis Fischer and wife, Betty, Martin Fischer and wife, Carmen, Ted Fischer and wife, Elizabeth, and Tim Fischer and wife, Patsy, all of Oak Ridge; and by a daughter-in-law, Judy Carson Fischer Mathis of Florida. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Joshua Fischer, Carson Fischer, and Neal Fischer, all of Knoxville, Jacob Fischer of Hawaii, and Daniel Fischer, Scott Fischer, Kristen Fischer, Timmy Fischer, Lindsay Fischer and Sydnay Fischer, all of Oak Ridge. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Martin Fischer officiating. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Anderson Memorial Gardens on Oliver Springs Highway. Nancy Ann Garrison, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, following a brief illness. Born April 16, 1923, in Anderson, S.C., she was the daughter of Thomas Edmond and Nettie McPhail Garrison, both now deceased. Miss Garrison was a graduate of T. L. Hanna Girls High School in Anderson and Winthrop College. She came to Oak Ridge immediately following college graduation in 1943 as an employee of the Tennessee Eastman Corp. and lived and worked in Oak Ridge until her death. She was a member of Welcome Baptist Church in Anderson. In her younger days, Miss Garrison enjoyed hiking and golfing. According to her family, she received great pleasure from travel and had traveled extensively throughout the world. Her family said she had a continuous interest in learning and over the years was involved in many courses, often on a graduate level, at the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Sara Garrison Cox of Belton, S.C., and Lounelle Garrison of Anderson; and by a nephew, James Bartlett Garrison of Anderson. Miss Garrison is survived by one brother, T. Ed Garrison and wife, Juanita, of Anderson; five nieces, Gaye Garrison Sprague and husband, Joel, and Elisabeth Reid Garrison, all of Greenville, S.C., Lee Garrison Smith and husband, Ron, of Anderson, Catherine Anne Garrison Davis and husband, Mark, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Jane Cox Moon and husband, Keith, of Georgetown, S.C., and by three nephews, Thomas E. Garrison III and wife, Angie, and Ronald Cox and wife, Janis, all of Anderson, and Thomas Bailey Cox and close friend, Dan Adcock, of Greenville. She is also survived by six great nephews and four great nieces, Garrison Cox and Claire Cox of Anderson, James Edmond (Jay) and Ben Sprague of Greenville, Abbie Garrison, Lillie Garrison, Garrison Smith and Emily Smith, all of Anderson, and Bailey Moon and Mitchell Moon of Georgetown. Phyllis Johnson of Oak Ridge is considered a longtime friend. The body was cremated. A private burial will be at the plot of her parents and sister at Welcome Baptist Church Cemetery in Anderson. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Benjamin "Ben" Douglas Nelson, 23, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at his home in Lenoir City. Born July 12, 1980, in Oak Ridge, he was the son of Douglas Gordon and Carol Elizabeth Colson Nelson of Oak Ridge. Mr. Nelson was a 1998 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. While at Oak Ridge High School, he played on the baseball team for four years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton, a senior at Tennessee Wesleyan College and he served as a student ambassador. Prior to attending Wesleyan, Mr. Nelson attended Roane State Community College for two years, where he was active with the golf team. His family said he enjoyed playing golf and was very active in many sports and a friend to many. He was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nelson is survived by his sister, Angela Michelle Mayfield and husband, Donny, of Athens; his grandparents, Grady and Ruth Colson of Knoxville and Betty Aird of Oak Ridge; his stepgrandmother, Joyce Crabtree of Decatur; and by his great-grandmother, Lula Nelson of Knoxville. He is also survived by three aunts, Linda Paschal and husband, Tom, of Carthage, Patti Thompson and husband, Tommy, of Niota, and Sheri Richesin and husband, Bud, of Sweetwater; three uncles, Frank Colson and wife, Sharon, of Halls, Cordell Colson and wife, Jenny, of Heiskell and Steve Nelson and wife, Rachel, of Kingston; and by several cousins and extended family members. His family said he will be emembered by many special friends. The funeral was Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Donald Morris officiating. Box 40, Attention Development Office, Athens, TN Alice Miles Thurmond, 84, of Rockford, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville after a brief illness. Born Feb. 26, 1919, in Thompson, Ga., she was the daughter of Eulian Malone Miles and Alice Swan Miles, both now deceased. Her family later moved to Lake City, Fla., where she graduated valedictorian from Lake City High School. She attended Florida State University for a term before flying to Puerto Rico to marry her fiancé, Kenneth Thurmond, now deceased, who had been assigned there with the U.S. Forestry Service. They lived in a stone house in the forest region near the El Yunque Mountain range for two years, before returning to the United States to start a family. After a brief time in Washington, D.C. and Oxford, Miss., with the forestry service, her husband took a job with Tennessee Valley Authority and they moved to Norris. During World War II, her husband was in the Pacific Theatre. Mrs. Thurmond took her children to live in Lake City, Fla., with her father until the war ended. Shortly after the end of the war, she returned to Norris with her family. In 1956, they started a State Farm Insurance Agency and moved to Oak Ridge, where they lived for 42 years. A charter member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Norris, Mrs. Thurmond continued her involvement at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where she was president of the Altar Guild for several years. After her children left home, she volunteered as a Pink Lady at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. According to her family, Mrs. Thurmond loved all things beautiful and she was domestically gifted. Her family said she excelled in cooking and canning from her annual garden, taking care of the home and entertaining others. Her family said her gifts of hospitality and generosity spilled over onto all who knew her. According to her family, she had many memories from their camper, with which she pursued her love of the water with visiting friends and family at Watts Bar Lake. She also took several trips out West and many trips to visit family in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Her family said good health and a love of outdoors encouraged spring photography trips in search of elusive, rare wild flowers in the Smoky Mountains. Her family said she enjoyed church, her friends, bridge and reading, in her later years. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Hopkins. Mrs. Thurmond is survived by two daughters, Pati Woodhull and husband, Alec, of Rockford, and Aynn Gehron and husband, Dick, of Charlotte, N.C.; her stepmother, Del Miles of Lake City, Fla.; and by six grandchildren, Shelby Trusley, Lauren Clevenger and Kenny Woodhull, all of the Knoxville area, Rich Gehron of Wilmington, N.C., and Ali Crotts and Jake Gehron of Charlotte. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and a nephew, Mark Hopkins of Tallahassee, Fla. A memorial service was to be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Craig Kallio officiating. A graveside service was to be at 1 p.m. Monday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Rose Mortuary Inc., Mann Heritage Chapel in Knoxville, is in charge of arrangements. Quentin Isaiah Etter, 2 months old, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at his home.
