Oldest member of Victory Baptist Church in Andersonville, Tenn. Preceded in death by her husband, James Barnett and a daughter, Judi McCoy Freeman. Survivors: daughter, Mildred McCoy and her husband, Cas of Lake City, Tenn.; granddaughter, Carol Synder and her husband, John of Chatham, Mass.; great grandchildren, Rick Phillips of Andersonville, Tenn., Melissa Dority and her husband, Mike of Andersonville, Tenn., Dirk C. Freeman of Birmingham, Ala., Lance Corporal George Pierce Freeman of US Marines in Cherry Point, NC; great-great grandson, Stephen Dority of Andersonville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; devoted friends, Rev. BEETS, MARY EVELYN WALLACE - age 90, of Clinton, Tenn., passed away Friday, July 25, 2003 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was born April 20, 1913 in Campbell County. She was a member of Sinking Springs United Methodist Church. Mary Evelyn worked at Magnet Mills in Clinton prior to starting her family. Her heart was always on the farm and she enjoyed gardening, farming, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren and attending UT football games. Preceded in death by her husband, George Woodrow Beets; parents, Robert and Minnie Tallent Wallace; sister, Margaret W. Yerkes and a brother, William T. Wallace. Survivors: daughter, Linda B. Jennings of Clinton; son, George "Wally" Beets and wife, Cathy of Clinton; grandsons, R. Dale Jennings, II and wife, Sheila of Clinton, Phillip Chrestopher Beets of Clinton, Cory Wallace Beets of Clinton; granddaughter, Amanda Leahn Beets of Clinton; great grandson, Austin Keith Beets of Clinton; several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. BURRIS, R.E. (BURRESS) - age 98 of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003 at his home. He was a member of the West Lonsdale Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Burris; his parents, P.B. (Babe) and Bidia Lowe Burress; brothers, Roy and Ova Burress and 1 sister, Geneva Burress. He is survived by a very loving and caring caregiver whom he loved like a son, Gary Boggs and son, Adam. His sisters, Vena Burress Cross, Juanita Lowe and Cleta Burress Thomas; several nieces and nephews and many other family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday July 28, 2003 at the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with the service to follow at 8 p.m. Revs. Ernie Coleman and Tom Rayford will officiate. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Sherwood Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday. JOHNSON, MARY CHADWELL - age 82 of 145 Dossett Lane, Jacksboro, passed away Friday, July 25, 2003 at the St. Mary's Medical Center of Campbell County. She was a member of the Cedar Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson was a devoted Christian wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and very involved in WMU. Mrs. Johnson was dedicated schoolteacher for 38 years in Campbell County and MI school systems. She was a member of the retired school teachers and the Eastern Star, Stooksbury Masonic Lodge. Mrs. Johnson was also the first member of the Pink Ladies and had been an active member of the American Cancer Society. She was preceded in death by parents, Duff and Stacy Ayers Chadwell; 1 sister, Nannie Gibson and 6 brothers, Henry, Lewis, Willie, Duffy, Woodrow and Charles Chadwell. Mrs. Johnson is survived by husband of 61 years, Charlie A. Johnson of Jacksboro; sons and daughters in law, Roger and Renee Johnson of Athens, Tenn., Dallas E. and Sandra L. Johnson of Jacksboro; daughters and sons in law, Karen J. and David Hall of LaFollette, Nancy J. and David Rutherford of Caryville; 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; sister, Martha Gibson of Ohio; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27 at the Cedar Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Ralph Leach and Rev. Ronnie Arnold and Brother Marshall Rasnake officiating. KIDD, LILLIAN CARR - 79, Oak Ridge, died on July 26, 2003 at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville. Born in Morley, TN to parents William Martin and Nellie Jane Lay Carr. Worked as a school teacher with Ludlow High School in Ludlow, KY and was of Baptist faith. Mrs. Kidd came to Oak Ridge from Kentucky in 1986. Preceded in death by husband, Roy Lindsey Kidd, 3-10-1990 Survivors include: step-children, Roy Kidd, Columbia, South America, Lynn LeGette, DeKalb, Mississippi, Becky Brooks, Lenoir City; brother, Martin Carr, Jr. and wife, Lois, Franklin, Ohio; nephew, Martin W. Carr and wife, Becky, Seymour; niece, Marla Martin, Temperance, Michigan; great-niece, Jessica Carr, Seymour. LARRY L. - age 58 of Wartburg, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2003 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leeton and Hannah Melton. He is survived by his wife, Johnnie Basler Melton; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Dennis Marlow of Carrollton, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Les and Leslie Melton of Douglasville, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Carmen and Wayne Ward of Wartburg; son , Darren Melton of Knoxville and special daughter-in-law, Candy Tucker Melton of Joyner; grandchildren, Madison Ward, Zachary Ward, and Savannah Melton; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friend, Hillard Lewallen. Lieutenant Melton was an employee of the Tennessee Department of Safety's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement for 32 years. He developed many lasting friendships throughout his career. Survivors wife Sue Shriner of Kingston; daughter Meagan Shriner of Kingston; mother and father in law Mary and Howard Phillips of Kingston; future son in law Charlie Henline of Lenoir City. Dave Shriner joined the environmental sciences division (ESD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 1974 and conducted pioneering research on the affects of air pollution and acid rain on terrestrial vegetation. He held leadership positions in ESD in a broad range of topics including the impact of synthetic fuels on the environment, regional resource analysis, environmental analyses, and the ecological sciences. Dave had a major influence on national and international science policy while at ORNL. He was a key leader in the nation's national acid precipitation assessment program and completed an assignment as senior policy analyst in the environment division of the office of science and technology policy, executive office of the President, Washington DC. Through his research and leadership accomplishments at ORNL, Dave was respected by the national and international research community and was truly one of the most prominent scientific leaders in his field. He left ORNL in 1998 to join the USDA forest service's north central research station in St. Paul Minnesota. Dave Shriner served as the assistant director of the North Central Research Station from 1998 to 2003. He managed the station's research programs in atmospheric science, landscape ecology, global climate change, short- rotation woody crops, silviculture, and forest inventory and monitoring. He also lead the station's focused research addressing landscape change and forest productivity issues in the Midwest. Dave championed the application of GIS and internet technology in making science results available and relevant to decision makers. While at the north central research station, Dave demonstrated the value of science in addressing the nation's wildfire problems. He prepared the first annual research progress report under the interagency national fire plan. Dave also served on the national task force developing strategic methods of making research investment decisions within the forest service. Dave was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, And a member of XI Sigma Pi, Phi Sigma, Phi Epsilon Phi, and Gamma Sigma Delta. He was preceded in death by his parents Sylva and Margaret Shriner. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Funeral 8pm Sunday July 27, 2003 in Kyker Chapel with Rev. Scott Cagle officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:45am Monday in Fairview Cemetery for the graveside. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
