>From The Knoxville News Sentinel 11 Sep 2003 TURNER, WALTER EDGAR - of Clinton, Tennessee, WOODY, HOWARD "PAP" - age 79 of Oak Ridge ============================================ TURNER, WALTER EDGAR - of Clinton, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, at the age of 83. He was formerly of Knoxville where he lived in West Hills for 34 years before moving to Clinton, Tennessee in 1998. He attended New Hopewell Baptist Church of South Knoxville for 14 years. He served as Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden. He was a veteran and served in Europe during World War II. He was retired from Carborundum Company of Buffalo, New York in Knoxville. Preceded in death by wife of 63 years, Imogene Olivia Turner; parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Turner; brothers, Tuck, Fred and Charles Turner; sister, Alma Mae. Survivors include brother, Lewis and wife, Gladys Turner of Knoxville; sister, Louise Lawson of Knoxville; two sons, Gary and wife, Anna, and granddaughter, Kimberly Turner of Clinton, John and wife, Susan, and granddaughter, Laura Turner of Clinton. Funeral service at Berry Funeral Home on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with burial at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, 3176 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, with Reverend Larry Trotter officiating. He was born in Spring Hill, Tennessee and spent his early years working with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Washington State and at the Willow Run Munitions Plant in Ann Arbor, Michigan where he met his wife of 59 years, Jane Smith from Harlan, Kentucky. In 1975 he retired after 30 years with Union Carbide, K-25 Plant where he worked as a plumber and union steward. He was an active businessman as president of Woody Valley Enterprises where he developed Woody's Restaurant and Tri County Golf Course and dealt in raw land and rental property in Oak Ridge. He was an active member of the Anderson County Democratic Party. He was an outgoing and friendly person with an imaginative sense of humor, quick with a joke and was happiest when with his family and friends fishing and playing golf. He was preceded in death by his parents Maxie and Etta Woody of Spring Hill; and by 11 brothers and sisters; Robert S. Woody of Nashville, Fulton Woody of Greenville, his twin, Herbert Woody, Billy Woody, James Woody, Amanda Eugenia Woody, Ruby Woody Bolton, Carrie Woody Gray, Laura Mai Woody, and Pauline Woody all of Oliver Springs. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Smith Woody; his son, John Howard Woody and his wife Geneva Collen Woody, son Michael Wayne Woody, all of Oak Ridge and his daughter Laura Jane Morris and her husband Bruce Morris of Anderson County; his brother Max Woody and his wife Sarah Woody of Hendersonville; three grandsons, John Howard Woody Jr. and wife Melissa Woody, their son Lee Lamance and daughter Vanesa Lamance, James Herbert Woody and wife Donna Woody and their daughter Mercedes , all of Oak Ridge and Brandon Williams and wife Kristy Williams of Sweetwater; sister-in-law Madge E. Smith and her son Charlie Smith of Lexington, Kentucky. Funeral services will be held Friday September 12 at 8:00 pm at Weatherford Mortuary. Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 13, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park at 10:00 am.
