Richardson, 89, ============================================ Richard M. French, 76, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at his home, after a brief battle with cancer. Born March 20, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of Maurice Lester French and Helen Welsch French. Mr. French was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church's Young Adult Group where he met Jeanne Rogers, now deceased, whom he married Oct. 15, 1955. At the church he was also active with the choir and St. Francis Garden Guild and served on the vestry several times. He served in the Navy during World War II, and he graduated from the University of Arkansas with a chemical engineering degree. Before coming to Oak Ridge, he worked for Phillips at a carbon block plant in Borger, Texas. He came to Oak Ridge in 1951 and began employment with Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the Oak Ridge K-25 site. Mr. French moved to the Y-12 Plant in the early '60s and worked in project engineering and dimensibral inspection. He returned to the K-25 site in the late 1980s to work for DSRD. He retired in 1994 with 42 years of company service. After retirement, his family said, he enjoyed attending, with his wife, the governor's conferences on tourism and meetings of the East Tennessee Tourism Group to promote Oak Ridge. He also enjoyed visits from his two granddaughters and having breakfast and lunch with his retiree buddies. According to his family, Mr. French enjoyed many hobbies including duplicate bridge and model trains. Mr. French is survived by two daughters, Mary Jeanne French of Oak Ridge and Sally Stalnaker and husband, Stan, of Marlton, N.J.; two granddaughters, Katherine Stalnaker and Virginia Stalnaker, both of Marlton; a brother, Warren French of Tallahassee, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, George Rogers and wife, Del, of Waterford, Mich. The funeral was to be at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Claire Keene officiating. Burial was to follow at St. Stephen's Memorial Garden. The family was to receive friends in the Parrish Hall of the church following the burial. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 212 N. Randolph Austin "Randy" Brown, 32, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville of complications following recent surgery. Mr. Brown was employed at Westside Tavern in Knoxville. He received training as a sous chef over time at The Palm restaurants in Atlanta, Ga., Boston, Mass., and Charlotte, N.C. Born April 7, 1971, in Wichita, Kan., he grew up in Oak Ridge and attended Cedar Hill Elementary School, Jefferson Junior High School and Oak Ridge High School. A 1989 graduate of Laurel High School in Knoxville, Mr. Brown attended the Atlanta College of Art. According to his family, he enjoyed music and as a drummer played in several bands in the Knoxville and Oak Ridge areas as well as in Atlanta. His family said his interests included photography and sketching, and he was a Christian. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jach and Martha Ford Gates, and by his paternal grandparents, Geron Sr. and Elizabeth Moss Brown. Mr. Brown is survived by his mother, Martha Gates Brown of Germantown, formerly of Oak Ridge; his father, Dr. Geron Brown of Chattanooga, formerly of Oak Ridge, and wife, Joan E. Brown; an older brother, Geron Brown III, and wife, Cynthia, of Knoxville, formerly of Oak Ridge; and by an older sister, Julia C. "Christy" Brown, of Knoxville, formerly of Oak Ridge. He is also survived by a stepsister, Amy Bright Talley and husband, Adam, of Claxton; a niece and four nephews, Dianna Brown, Nathaniel Magone, Samuel Magone and Francis Magone, all of Knoxville and Evan Talley of Claxton; his stepgrandparents, Carlock and Juanita Stooksbury of Clinton; and by several aunts, uncles and cousins. A graveside service was Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Phillip Gates, Mr. Brown's uncle, officiating. Lena Elna Borella, 80, of Oak Ridge, died on Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born July 3, 1923, she was the daughter of Clarence and Sally Louise Green Winslett. Mrs. Borella was a member of Robertsville Baptist Church, where she was active with Tabitha's Table, Sunday school and the chancel choir. She was a past president of the Cancer Cupboard, a member of the Woman's Club and a former member of Rambling Rebels Square Dance Club. She was a homemaker who was an avid craft maker and league bowler. Mrs. Borella came to Oak Ridge in 1951 from Birmingham, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Brady "Chuck" Borella, on Feb. 1, 1986, and by a granddaughter, Colleen Cade. Mrs. Borella is survived by two sons, Larry Borella and wife, Lucille, of Dripping Springs, Texas, and Donald Borella and wife, Cherie, of Hendersonville; her daughter, Cindy Lou Justice, of Oak Ridge; her sister, Nina Kent, of Alabaster, Ala.; six grandchildren, Travis Borella of Tampa, Fla., Kathy Justice Flinchum of Knoxville, Sally Borella and Darcy Borella, both of Dripping Springs, and Brady Borella and Michael Borella, both of Hendersonville; and by a niece and nephew, Joy Stanford of Pineapple, Ala., and Mike Kent of Alabaster. The funeral was Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Prince officiating. Alpha Foster, 89, of Heiskell, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born May 13, 1914, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of R.E. and Elizabeth Davis Wallace. Mrs. Foster was a member of Deep Springs Baptist Church. She worked at the former Magnet Hosiery Mill in Clinton as a seamstress until its closing, and she then went to work at Breezy Winds in Knoxville. Her family said she was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to all. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Bill Foster. Mrs. Foster is survived by two daughters, Sue Allred and husband, Richard, and Billie White and husband, Frank, all of Clinton; three sons, S. Tyrone Foster and wife, Judy, and Rufus Foster and wife, Donna, all of Heiskell, and Lynn Foster and wife, Martha, of Clinton; 14 grandchildren, David Foster, Bryan Foster, Ryan Foster, Crystal Baggett and husband, Kenny, Patrick Allred and wife, Amanda, Tracy Wilson and husband, Jeff, Mary Procise and husband, Scott, Lance White, Jeffery White, James Bradshaw, Teresa Davis, Meredith Foster, Lydia Foster and Taylor Foster; and by 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Stella Massengill of Indiana and Hazel Cox and husband, Clyde, of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews. Samuel Luther "Luke" Hutson, 92, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, in San Antonio, Texas. Born Aug. 16, 1911, he was the sixth child of Tom and Lucy Bell Hutson of Andersonville. He graduated from Andersonville High School in 1930 and joined the Tennessee Valley Authority's Norris Dam job site in 1933. He worked as an electrician on the Tennessee Valley Authority's Pickwick Dam and Kentucky Dam projects as a member of IBEW and worked at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant during World War II. He lived in Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas and Ohio, before settling in St. Clair Shores, Mich., in 1958. As an electrical engineer at Giffels & Associates, he was part of the Saturn Five launch pad design team for NASA's Apollo project. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of St. Clair Shores, afterward attending Manatee United Methodist Church in Bradenton, Fla., and Colonial Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas. He married his wife, Doris, in 1976, in St. Clair Shores, after his retirement from Giffels & Associates of Detroit. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 33 years, Juanita, in 1974. In addition to his wife, Doris, Mr. Hutson is survived by four sons, Maurice, Sammy, Wayne, and Joe; two stepdaughters, Marie Bowen and Melissa Lolmaugh; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and by siblings, Thelma Treece, Thomas "Pete" Hutson, Lucy Sharp and Lucille Hatmaker. Born Nov. 22, 1925, in Coalfield, he was the fifth of eight sons of Hobert and Ora Edmonds Massengale. Mr. Massengale was a lifelong resident of Coalfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and served in Germany during the later part of the war. He was a retired construction worker and a member of Local Labor Union No. 818 in Knoxville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Blanche Davis Massengale; a stepson, Jerry Davis; a stepdaughter, Wilma Smith; and by five brothers, Frank Massengale, James Massengale, Charles Massengale, Earl Massengale and Raymond Massengale. Mr. Massengale is survived by two stepsons, Harold Davis and wife, Gloria, of Oakdale, and Jackie Davis and wife, Alice, of Harriman; and by 10 stepgrandchildren, Melissa Leach and Wayne Davis, both of Oakdale, Cindy Stair, George Ed Smith, Debra Kay Stout, Vickie Monk and Wendell Smith Jr., all of Harriman, Susie Armes of Petros, Jason Davis of Lawnvale, and John Smith of Rockwood. He is also survived by two brothers, Rubert "Rube" Massengale and Ed Massengale, both of Coalfield; a stepson-in-law, Wendell Smith of Harriman; and by several nieces and nephews. Born Jan. 19, 1925, in Benham, Ky., she was the daughter of Roy and Bessie Smith Templin. Mrs. Lewis was a resident at Windsor Gardens Assisted Living and was a member of Fair Havens Baptist Church in Powell. She worked at the Atomic Energy Commission, The Oak Ridger and Hills Department Store. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Lewis; two sisters, Elaine Shelton and Merle Benton; and by a brother, Charles T. Templin. Mrs. Lewis is survived by two sons, Keith Lewis and wife, Gail, of Harrison, and Scott Lewis of Powell; her daughter, Paula Cadden and husband, Lawrence, of Goochland, Va.; three brothers, Melvin Templin of Norfolk, Va., Herbert Templin and wife, Dorothy, of Maryville, and Travis Templin and husband, Sammie, of Athens; and by three sisters, Mildred McCloud and husband, James, of Halls, Fay Ziglar of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Shirley White of Fayetteville, N.C.
