MANLY, WILLIAM D. - one of the nation's leading metallurgists, and a recipient of the National Medal of Technology from President Bill Clinton in 1993, passed away today after a lengthy illness. He was 80. As a metallurgist, Manly played a major role in developing specialty nickel- based metal alloys for defense, space exploration, and industrial purposes. These alloys can be found in various crucial applications such as the jet engines of most commercial and military aircraft, the re-entry heat shield of the Apollo spacecraft, and throughout the chemical process industry. In a White House ceremony in 1993 President Bill Clinton bestowed the National Medal of Technology on Mr. Manly for "his success in the development and processing of advanced high temperature and high performance materials". Manly was born in the small town of Malta-McConnelsville, OH January 13, 1923. During the summer he worked in the family's Brown-Manly plow factory where he poured the molten metal into plow molds-which began his life long affinity with metallurgy. Following service in the Marines from 1943-46, Manly earned a Masters in Engineering degree from Notre Dame in 1949. Bill Manly began his career as a metallurgist in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, TN working for Union Carbide. In 1960 he was named Director of ORNL's Gas Cooled Reactor project- where he served on a technical commission established by President Eisenhower to help the nation of India develop nuclear energy. In 1964 Manly was named Director of Materials Research for Union Carbide in New York City. In 1965 he was named Director of Materials Research for Carbide's Stellite Division in Kokomo, IN-a world leader in the development and production of super stainless steel specialty alloys. In 1969 he became General Manager, and in 1970 Stellite was purchased by the Cabot Corporation of Boston, MA. Manly retired in 1986 as Executive Vice President of Cabot's Engineered Products Group. He held 5 patents. Beyond his corporate experience, William Manly was active in numerous organizations and the recipient of several honorary awards. He served as a Director of Boston Edison (now NStar), Key Energy Group, Covenant Healthcare and the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee (CROET). Professional affiliations include: President (1972- 73) of the American Society for Metals (ASM), service on the President's Metal Properties Council from 1978-82, service on several Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) committees, and Fellow of the American Nuclear Society. In 1974 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Academic honors include: honorary Doctorate Degree from Notre Dame University in 2001, College of Engineering Award from Notre Dame, and the Nathan W. Dougherty Award from the University of Tennessee. In 1986 Indiana Governor Robert Orr named Manly a "Sagamore of the Wabash" for his contributions to that state. Following his retirement, he resided in Kingston, Tennessee and more recently, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Mr. Manly's philanthropy was widespread and included: Notre Dame, the Boy Scouts of America, Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital, Indiana University-Kokomo (IUK), and Roane State University in Tennessee. In 1949, while still at Notre Dame, Manly took a bet and asked the secretary in the metallurgy department for a date. They married, and in 1999 Bill and Jane Manly celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary-and shortly thereafter Jane passed away. Manly is survived by his sister Sonya of McConnelsville, OH and four children: Hugh Wilkinson of Louisville, KY; Ann Slautterback of Los Altos, CA; Marc Manly of Cincinnati, OH; and David Manly of Duxbury, MA. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Services will be held at the Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge, TN.
