    2. >From the Knoxville News Sentinel 25 Nov 2003 GALL, WILLIAM ROLFE age 90, of Oak Ridge passed away on Sunday, November 23, at his home. He was born in Portland, Oregon, on May 20, 1913, to Charles Love Gall and Myra Rolfe Gall, and grew up in Rogersville, Tennessee. Through his life, Bill has enjoyed building an 18-foot cabin cruiser and boating on Norris Lake; making red wood lawn furniture; putting together a wooden clock; golfing; and growing roses. Mr. Gall attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, participating in the Cooperative Program of Work and School, and received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1936. After graduation he worked for Tennessee Eastman Corp. in Kingsport, Tennessee as an engineer in the Instrument Department. In August, 1937 he received an appointment as a Laboratory Assistant in Mechanical Engineering and graduate student at Yale University. After studying two years toward a Masters of Engineering degree at Yale, in 1939 he went to the Ethyl Corporation Research Laboratory in Detroit, Michigan, as engineer in training. From March 1940 to August 1941 he was a Laboratory Assistant in Applied Physiology in the Kettering Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati where he developed instruments for detecting and measuring particulate and gaseous concentrations of pollutants in air. From fall 1941 to fall 1944 he was Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Louisville in Kentucky teaching courses for civilian engineering students, Navy V-12 engineers and various courses for personnel in defense industries in the Louisville area such as production inspectors, aircraft engine operation. >From 1944 to 1947 Mr. Gall served as Senior Design Engineer in the Process Improvement Division in the Y-12 plant under Tennessee Eastman Clinton Engineers in Oak Ridge. During this time he also worked on completing his Masters Degree, and in 1947 he earned his Masters of Mechanical Engineering from Yale University. From 1947 to 1978 he worked in Reactor Design at O.R.N.L. In 1952 he graduated from the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. From 1964 to 1978 he was Engineering Consultant to Director, Engineering Division. Mr. Gall retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in May 1978. From 1979 to 1988 he was to ASME - Nuclear QA Surveys; The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards; Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc.; TVA Nuclear Engineering Division through various contractors. He was a member of ASTM; NSPE; TSPE; PHI KAPPA PHI; and TAU BETA PI. His various honors and awards include ASME J. Hall Taylor Medal, 1972; TSPE Outstanding Engineer Award for Oak Ridge, 1973; ASME Fellow, 1966: Life Fellow, 1978; Who's Who in Engineering, 1978. Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge. He and his wife, Edith, were married on Dec. 12, 1969. He is survived by his wife, Edith; a son: Bob; two daughters; Mary Gall Norris and husband, John, of Oak Ridge; and Vicky Rolfe of Kingston. He is also survived by a step-son, Boyd Jones of Atlanta; and a step-grandson, Brad Jones of Atlanta. He is also survived by three grandchildren; Daniel Gall of Philadelphia, PA, Wake Norris of Columbus, OH, and Amber Norris of Oak Ridge, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Jean Nash of Detroit, MI, and Marion Pietarinen of Darlington, SC. Family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at the First Presbyterian Church. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the church with graveside services immediately following at Oak Ridge Memorial Park on Bethel Valley Rd. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the pipe organ renovation fund at First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 6106, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-6106.
