>From The Knoxville News Sentinel 7 Sep 2003 BERNEY, ELMER EUGENE "GENE", JR. - age 70, of Heiskell, BENNETT, DAVE B. - age 84, of Clinton, FOWLER, LOUISE CATE - age 88, of Clinton, HONEYCUTT , MR. WILLIAM CLAY "RIBS" - age 86, ============================================ BERNEY, ELMER EUGENE "GENE", JR. - age 70, of Heiskell, went home to meet his Master on Sunday, October 5, 2003. He was born February 9, 1933, in Knoxville. He and his family were descendants of Knoxville's Swiss Colony. He was a member of Fairview Freewill Baptist Church where he served on the Deacon Board, and was Choir Director for 38 years. He was also a United States Army Veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. Gene worked for Armour & Company for 25 years, and for East Tennessee Packing Company. He was an excavating contractor for a number of years, retiring after suffering a stroke. Preceded in death by parents, Elmer E. Berney, Sr. and DeAlva Russ Berney. Survivors: wife of 46 years, Patsy Whaley Berney of Heiskell; son, Scott Casey Berney of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter, Kelley Ilagan and husband, Edwin of Heiskell; brother, Jack Berney and wife, Margie of Powell; sisters, Doris Smith and husband, Frank of Powell, Louise McKinney and husband, John A. Jr., of Powell, Lola Berry and husband, William of Halls, Alice Thomas of Brunswick, Ga.; aunt, Lorene Berney Baker of Knoxville, and several nieces and nephews, Pastor of 35 years and dear friend, Rev. Glenn Hall and wife, Mary of Clinton. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, in Clinton. Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Hobbs and Rev. William Berry officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery with Full Military Honors being conducted by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be fellow deacons and church members, Bill Marcum, David Parolari, Tom Clevenger, Bill Anderson, Wayne Howard and Jerry Kerr. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, of Clinton, in charge of all arrangements. BENNETT, DAVE B. - age 84, of Clinton, passed away Sunday, October 5, 2003, at the Farragut Health Care Center in Knoxville. He was born July 28, 1918, in Anderson County. He was a member of Clinton First Baptist Church. He had worked at the Magnet Hosiery Mills for 25 years. Mr. Bennett was also a United States Army Veteran who served during World War II. Preceded in death by wife, Audrey Bennett; sons, Charles Eugene Pemberton and Jack L. Pemberton; parents, William and Margaret Farmer Bennett. Survivors: daughter-in-law, Dianne Pemberton of Clinton; grandchildren, Bob Pemberton, John Pemberton, Lisa Darnall, David Pemberton, Jack Pemberton, Jr., Kristi Ilar, Daniel Pemberton; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Ernest "Mollie" Powell of Clinton. Family and friends will gather at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton between the hours of 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 8, 2003, and proceed to Sunset Cemetery for graveside service with Dr. Paul Frick officiating. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, of Clinton, in charge of all arrangements. FOWLER, LOUISE CATE - age 88, of Clinton, passed away at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Friday, October 3, 2003. The daughter of U.S. Cate and Ruby Bankston Cate, she was born August 24, 1915, in Knoxville, where she grew up, graduating from Knoxville High School in 1933, and the University of Tennessee in 1937. In 1939, she married her college sweetheart, George Fowler. She received a Masters degree from the University of Michigan in 1963. After raising her family and teaching in the public schools of Tennessee, New York, and Michigan, she retired to Anderson County in 1971. An accomplished needlewoman, she won many prizes for her quilts and embroidery; she also made vestments and banners for her church, First Presbyterian in Oak Ridge. Preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Jeff B. Cate and Ray E. Cate. Survivors: beloved husband of 64 years, George Robertson Fowler of Clinton; daughters, Frances Fowler of Hamilton, Ohio, Marianne Fowler of Alexandria, Va., Susan Fowler of Clinton; brother, Kern Cate of Hiram, Maine; sisters-in-law, Joyce Fowler of Knoxville, Carolyn Cate of Maine, Bertha Fowler of Clinton, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 1:00-1:30 p.m., Thursday, October 9, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, with the funeral service following at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Alex Stuart officiating. Interment will be held 4:00 p.m., Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville. Flowers may be sent to the church on Thursday morning. Preceded in death by parents, Charlie and Dessie (Hicks) Gaylor. Survivors: sons, Ronnie Gaylor of Jacksboro, Eddie Gaylor of Ohio; daughters, Susan Perry of Elk Valley, Darlene Herron of Caryville, Claudene Gaylor of Jacksboro; eight grandchildren; brothers, John Gaylor and Delmus Gaylor, both of Jacksboro; sister, Almeta West of High Springs, Fla. HONEYCUTT , MR. WILLIAM CLAY "RIBS" - age 86, passed away Sunday, October 5,2003, at his home in Oakdale. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He retired from the Southern Railway after forty two years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wiley A. And Nancy Eva Wilson Honeycutt ; brothers, Ted, Kenneth and Marvin Honeycutt ; sisters, Geneva Douglas, Clara Stonecipher and Mabel Honeycutt. Surviving wife of 62 years, Effie Smith Honeycutt of Oakdale; sons, Rodney A. Honeycutt, of Chattanooga, Wendell E.
