Byrge, 64, of Clinton, ========================================================= >From The Oak Ridger 6 Oct 2003 Mildred Audrey Day, 82, of the Claxton community, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at her home, with her family by her side. Born July 14, 1921, in Whitley County, Ky., she was the daughter of Joe and Lela Rollins Elliott. Mrs. Day was originally from Rockholt, Ky., and moved to Anderson County in 1950. According to her family, she was a devoted wife and mother, and she also raised several foster children. Her family said she enjoyed sewing, painting and crocheting, and that she was a favorite among local crafters. Mrs. Day was a longtime member of Batley Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Leon Day, and by two sons, Gary Elliott and Willis Ray Meadows. Mrs. Day is survived by two sons, Cleve Day and wife, Laurie, of Claxton, and David Day and wife, Lisa, of Knoxville; a daughter, Oletha Day of Clinton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Elliott and wife, Christine, of Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Lillian Day of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral was Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Luke Kidwell officiating. Burial followed at Batley Baptist Church cemetery. Jasper L. Condra, 77, of Oliver Springs, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at his home. Born Sept. 13, 1926, in South Pittsburgh, he was the son of William Thomas Condra and Etta Garner Condra. Mr. Condra lived in Oliver Springs since 1964. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was a retired truck driver after working for 35 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Catherine Condra; a son, Paul David "Tommy" Condra; and by two brothers, James Condra and Vernon Condra. Mr. Condra is survived by his wife, Betty Thacker Condra; three daughters, Jeanette Moses of Ooltewah, Mary Bunch and husband, Clarence, of Dayton, Ohio, and Jean Ferguson and husband, Bill, of Oliver Springs; a son, Dayma Condra and wife, Teresa, of Oliver Springs; and by two stepdaughters, Diane McMahan and husband, Dennis, of Greenville, Ill., and Deborah Titus and husband, Ronald, of Maryville. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, John Moses, Gina Saufnauer, Tony Bunch, Gail Vaughan, Josh Condra, Christopher Condra, Tracey Hamilton and Jason Condra; four stepgrandchildren, Karen Lewis, Jennifer Johnson, Angela Parham and Catrina Hansborough; and by four great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with Eugene Underwood officiating. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens on Oliver Springs Highway. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at the funeral home. Mary Nell Jackson, 73, of Oliver Springs, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Feb. 13, 1930, in Big Sandy, she was the daughter of Mabel Turner Wheatley. Mrs. Jackson was a longtime Oliver Springs resident. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Elmer Wheatley Sr., and by her husband, Labron Jackson. Mrs. Jackson is survived by two stepsisters, Patricia Weber and San Dimas, Calif., and Naomi Wheatley of Big Sandy; a stepbrother, Elmer Wheatley Jr. of Anniston, Ala.; an aunt, Velma Evans of Big Sandy; and by a sister-in-law, Vivian Hale of Oliver Springs. The funeral was Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Garvan Walls officiating. A graveside service was to be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at Anderson Memorial Gardens on Oliver Springs Highway. Helen Sally Cates Pierce, of Asbury Place in Maryville, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003. She was the daughter of R.C. and Ida Myrtle Cates. Mrs. Pierce was a homemaker and lived in Tennessee most of her life. She owned and operated Pierce Grocery in the Central community between Elizabethton and Johnson City for 12 years during the 1960s and 1970s. Mrs. Pierce lived with her daughter, Margaret Reece and husband, Bill, and their daughter, Sandy Reece, all of Edmonton, Ky., and Knoxville. She was a Baptist and had taught many children's Sunday school classes over the years. Her husband, Harry Dugger Pierce; her sister-in-law, Tina Simerly; three sisters, Thelma Cates, Ethel Pierce and Ruth Campbell; a brother, L.D. Cates; and by a son-in-law, Charles Davis. In addition to her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, Mrs. Pierce is survived by three daughters, Virginia Davis of Oak Ridge, Norma Rhea and husband, Gary, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Connie Roberts and husband, Bill, of Unicoi; a son and his wife, Randal and Linda Brown Pierce of Maryville; two sisters Gladys Reece of Hampton, and Leona Stout of Cumberland, Va.; and by 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home in Elizabethton with the Rev. Leland Lyon officiating. Janet Lyon, granddaughter of Mrs. Pierce, provided the music. Burial followed in the Pierce Cemetery. Her grandsons served as pallbearers.
