>From The Knoxville News Sentinel 12 Oct 2003 CORBIN, LAWRENCE TAPP - 85, HUMPHREY, FRANK D. - age 70 of Clinton, ========================================= CORBIN, LAWRENCE TAPP - 85, died October 10 at Lakeshore Meadows in Nashville. He was born in Nebo, Hopkins Co., Ky. on August 6, 1918, the son of the late Forest and Ada Dame Corbin. He married Mary Elizabeth Townes on January 28, 1939. After graduating from the University of Kentucky and serving in the US Navy. "Larry" (to his friends) or "Tapp" (to family members), worked in Detroit at the Ford Motor Company before staring work in 1944 with the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the Chemistry Division. In May of 1950, when the Analytical Chemistry Division was created and directed toward the separation and processing of plutonium, he moved to that division and later became its Assistant Director. During his professional career, he served as Co-Chairman and Chairman of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and was made a Fellow of American Institute of Chemists and received the Award of Merit, the Harlan 1 Anderson Award and the Charles B. Dudley Medal. During the 55 years that he and Lib lived in Oak Ridge, he was active in and an officer of the Oak Ridge Country Club. His hobbies included gardening, refereeing basketball games, playing golf, ballroom dancing and traveling. He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth Corbin; two daughters and sons in law, Patricia Ann (Pat) Shelton and Bill Shelton in Nashville, and Mary Tapp (Tappie) Thornton and James W. Thornton, Jr. in Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandsons, James W. (Jim) Thorton, III in Chicago, Ill. and William Tapp (Bill) Thornton and Kris Thornton and two great grandchildren, Isabel Tapp Thornton and Peyton Fletcher Thornton in Las Vegas, Nev. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Disease Research in memory of Lawrence T. Corbin. Graveside services and burial to be held in Oddfellows Cemetery in Madisonville, Ky. 1 p.m. Wednesday October 15, 2003. Arrangements by Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home, Nashville. HUMPHREY, FRANK D. - age 70 of Clinton, passed away Friday, October 10, 2003 at Methodist Medical Center. He was formerly of the Mill Creek Community in Andersonville. He was a member & Deacon at Red Hill Baptist Church. He retired as a heavy equipment operator with A.B. Long Co. and later with I-75 Stone. Preceded in death by parents, Paris & Sarah Pyle Humphrey; sister, Cora Miller; brothers, Willie, Cecil, Everett & James Humphrey. Survivors: wife, Mildred Humphrey of Clinton; daughters, Barbara & husband, Ed Ridenour of Andersonville, Evelyn & husband, Wayne Bumgardener of Powell; son, Danny & wife, Erin Humphrey of Norris; grandchildren, Michelle Kirchenstiner & Lee Ridenour, Allen & wife, Nikki Bumgardner & Kevin Humphrey; great grandchildren, Michael Kirchenstiner, Jessi Cheyenne Bumgardner; sister, Marie & husband, James Miller of Halls; several nieces & nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday October 12, 2003 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with funeral services following in the chapel with Rev. Terry Slover, Rev. Mark Keith & Rev. Leo Elliott officiating. The interment will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2003 at Woodhav en Memorial Garden.
