    2. >From the Oak Ridger 24 Oct 2003 Edwin Frederick Phares, 85, of Oak Ridge, Douglas Robert Crandall, 20, of Oak Ridge, Ruby L. Gilliam, 81, formerly of Oak Ridge, John C. Ezell, 88, of Oak Ridge, Edna R. Kyle, 84, of Oak Ridge, ========================================= Edwin Frederick Phares, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at Briarcliff Health Care Center. Born Jan. 22, 1918, in Red Cloud, Neb., he was the son of Charles Francis and Eurilla Caldwell Phares. He grew up in the town of Guide Rock. Mr. Phares attended Doane College in Crete, Neb., for one year and transferred to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., to complete a bachelor's degree in 1940. Following graduation he joined the Navy ROTC program and received his commission as ensign in February 1941. He went on active duty on the flagship of the Atlantic Fleet, the USS Augusta. Shortly after Pearl Harbor he was reassigned to the USS San Diego, and served in the South Pacific and also on an aircraft carrier, and an Amphibious Command Ship in the same theater of operation, leaving the Navy as a lieutenant commander in December 1945. Mr. Phares returned to the University of Nebraska for graduate studies, and received a master's degree in biochemistry in August 1948. He came to Oak Ridge to work in the biology division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He worked in a group with the late Dr. Stanley Carson on problems and methods of using radioactive and stable isotopes to study microbial metabolism. After 15 years, his family said he was asked to set up a fermentation system to produce cells and their components on a large scale for research purposes. He retired from this position in January 1983. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, served several terms as elder, and was a choir member for 25 years. He was also the church's pipe organ project leader during the 1950s and 1960s, and the completed organ was the first in an Oak Ridge church. The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society was an interest of his from its beginning, and he served as president and then as a board member for a number of years. He was also widely known as a longtime worker at the West Hills voting precinct. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Phares Nelson, of Curtis, Neb. Mr. Phares married Margaret Anderson on Christmas Day in 1941 in New York, N.Y. In addition to his wife, Mr. Phares is survived by two sons, Robert and wife, Peggy, of Knoxville, and Lee and wife, Gail, of Trout Lake, Wash.; and by three daughters; Patty of Miami, Fla., Barbara Rooney and husband, Tom, of Garden Grove, Calif., and Anne of Minneapolis, Minn. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Melissa Phares and Charles Phares and wife, Julie Ford Phares, all of Seattle, Wash., Allison Phares of Knoxville, Kristen and Dennis Rooney of Garden Grove, and Holly Phares of Trout Lake; and by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church, with a reception following to greet family members The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the pipe organ renovation fund at First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 6106, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-6106 or the Keystone Elder Day Center, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, where Mr. Phares participated in activities during the last 13 months. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Douglas Robert Crandall, 20, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, after a lengthy illness. Born Dec. 26, 1982, in Muncy, Ind., he was the son of Robert R. and Vivian "Vicky" Wright Crandall of Oak Ridge. Mr. Crandall was a member of Woodland Park Baptist Church. He attended Oak Ridge High School and Roane State Community College. His family said he enjoyed video games, working out, and the outdoors. According to his family, Mr. Crandall would go out of his way to help people in need. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Homer and Lida Crandall. In addition to his parents, Mr. Crandall is survived by his love, Christina LeeDawn Bean of Oak Ridge; his daughter, Alicia Franklyn Crandall of Oak Ridge; three brothers, Christopher Lee Crandall, Brandon Lee Crandall and Gregory Ray Crandall, all of Oak Ridge; a sister, Kristina Marie Crandall of Oak Ridge; a niece, Austyn Paige Crandall of Oak Ridge; and by his maternal grandparents, Karen and Elzie Wright Jr. of Jamestown. He is also survived by aunts and uncles, Glen Wright, Jodi and Tim Haun, Sherry and Waynn Bratcher, Dennis and Therasa Terry, Samuel Elzie Wright III, Cindy Wright, Donald and Cindy Crandall, Gary and Cathy Crandall, and Kenny and Linda Kay Meador; two cousins, Joseph Zamudio and Jeff Phipps, who are considered special; and by several other cousins. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Woodland Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Lee officiating. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. CDT Monday, Oct. 27, at Taylor Place Cemetery in Jamestown. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Woodland Park Baptist Church, 200 Manhattan Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Gilliam, 81, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003. She was preceded in death by a son, Ron Gilliam; and by two sisters, Georgia Cook and Jewel Williams. Mrs. Gilliam is survived by a son, Lee Roy Gilliam; a daughter, Linda S. Forbes and husband, Rick, of Oak Ridge; two grandsons, Nathan Forbes of Knoxville and Lee Jordan Gilliam of Hamilton, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Denise Gilliam, of Hamilton; and by two brothers, C.B. Huddleston and Arlie Huddleston Jr., both of the Oak Grove community in Westmoreland. Burial will be Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Westmoreland. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909. Alexander Funeral Home in Gallatin is in charge of arrangements. Edna R. Kyle, 84, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at her home.
