Mr. Mills came to Oak Ridge in 1945 as one of the first members of thecivilian police force, which ultimately became the Oak Ridge Police Department. He retired from the Police Department in 1980 as a captain serving as chief of detectives and assistant chief of police. He had a variety of interests, ranging from the practical to the unusual.He took law and electronics classes to help him with his job at the Police Department, and taxidermy and motel management to satisfy his own curiosity. He was an avid photographer, boating enthusiast and beekeeper.His own interest in electronics, roses and music provided hours of enjoyment for his friends and family. After his retirement, Mr. Mills was a familiar sight around town atop his Honda GoldWing, wearing a motorcycle helmet and dark glasses. He and his late wife, Barnette, were charter members of Central Baptist Church. Born in LaFollette, he moved with his family to Harlan County, Ky., in the mid-1920s. He and Barnette Evans were high school sweethearts and married in 1934. Mr. Mills spent seven years as a coal miner before deciding to move his growing family away from that area of Kentucky which was becoming widely known for its violence and gun battles concerning the United Mine Workers and their efforts to disband the progressive mine union. He found work with the Tennessee Valley Authority's public safety service and at Fercleave Corporation before he began his long and impressive career with the Oak Ridge Police Department. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 1684, a charter member of the Anderson County Radio Communications Club, a charter member and past commodore of the Oak Ridge Boat Club and a member of two area motorcycle clubs. In addition, he was a member of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Officers Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, and an FBI National Academy associate, an honor he received by attending the academy in Quantico, Va., for three months. George, Dad, Pop, Uncle Allen, Big Daddy, Captain, Allen - he was known by all of these. His children and family were always in awe of him, and he inspired respect and love in his own stoic way. "Our work ethic, sense of values, love of God, family and county, we owe to you, Dad." Mr. Mills was preceded in death by his wife, Barnette, on Nov. 17, 2000. They had been married for 66 years at the time of her death. He is also preceded in death by a son, George Allen Mills Jr., and a daughter, Sarah Lou Mills. In addition, a sister and two brothers, Monnie Kaylor, Charles Mills and Herbert Mills, who all lived in Knoxville, died previously. Mr. Mills is survived by his children, Joe Edward Mills and his wife, Judy, of St. Augustine, Fla., Charles Evans Mills and his wife, Doris, of Beverly Hills, Fla., and Kathryn Horne and her husband, Andy, of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; and by 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Melba and Jim Elliott of Fort Worth, Texas, Nancy and Clyde Moneyhun of Benham, Ky., and Ruby and Garland Kelly of Indianapolis, Ind. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Gray officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Weatherford Mortuary. Leonard T. "Pete" Wyrick, 76, of Oliver Springs, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at his home. Born June 21, 1926 in Petros, he was the son of Lee Wyrick and Tilda Massengill Wyrick. He had lived in Oliver Springs since childhood. Retired from the Windrock Coal Co., he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was also a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed feeding and watching birds and gardening. The family would like to show a special appreciation to Ronald Gallaher for all of his help and kindness. Mr. Wyrick is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ethel Gallaher Wyrick; two brothers, Harvey Wyrick of Clinton and Don Wyrick and his wife, Barbara, of Caryville; three sisters, Charlene Harness of Jacksboro, Marilyn Goodman and her husband, Earl, of Caryville, and Lauvena Strickland of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Pride and the Rev. Gary Massengill officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Amanda Sue Rhea, 20, of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville. Born Sept. 15, 1982, in Oak Ridge, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Pam Daugherty of Oliver Springs. She was a lifelong resident of Anderson County and a 2000 graduate of Clinton High School. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Ottis Daugherty and her maternal grandparents, Clifton Burl Rhea and Pauline Rhea. In addition to her parents, Ms. Rhea is survived by two daughters, Destiny Rhea and Desiree Mitchell; a brother and two sisters, Gary Travis Daugherty and Christal Rhea, both of Oliver Springs, and Patricia Rhea of Andersonville; and by her paternal grandmother, Hassie Daugherty of Clinton. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Curtis Nolan officiating. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Farmers Grove Baptist Church cemetery in South Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Glenn Edward Caughorn, 82, of Caryville, died Friday, March 28, 2003, in Toledo, Ohio. Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City is in charge of arrangements. Eva Mae Tidwell, 91, of Clinton, died Monday, March 31, 2003. Mrs. Tidwell was the oldest living member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Clinton. She loved her family and her life revolved around her family and her church. She loved cooking meals for her family and was an avid gardener. Born July 14, 1911, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of William and Nettie Harmon Sharp. She was the widow of George W. Tidwell. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Thelma Lee Tidwell, a granddaughter, Karen Rhoades, a grandson, Charles E. McCoy, a brother, Luther Sharp, and a half-brother, Coy Gaylor. Mrs. Tidwell is survived by three daughters, Reva Rush and her husband, Earl, of Newport News, Va., Lillie Rhoades of Nolansville, Texas, and Geneva Goodman and her husband, James, of Clinton; three sons, Lonnie D. Tidwell and his wife, Loretta, of Maryville, Glen Tidwell and his wife, Judy, of Whitehouse, Bobby Tidwell and his wife, Martha, of Woodstock, Ga.; a sister, Parlie Kidwell of Clinton; and by 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at noon Friday, April 4, 2003, at Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Rev. Donnie Disney officiating. The body will be at the church one hour before services. Burial will be at the church cemetery with the Rev. Scott White assisting with graveside services.
