Davidson, 79, of Oak Ridge, ===================================== Subramanian Raman, 65, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at his home. Dr. Raman was born April 2, 1938, in Kollengode, a small town in southwestern India. After graduating from the University of Madras, he immigrated to the United States in 1959, earning his master's degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. IN 1966, he earned his doctorate in physics from Pennsylvania State University. He moved to Oak Ridge in 1966 to join the physics division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He was working at ORNL as a senior research staff member in the area of experimental nuclear physics until the time of his death. He was also a co-editor of the Atomic Data and Nuclear Data Tables. He published a significant body of work during his time at ORNL and traveled widely to conduct research and attend scientific conferences. The Ramans are members of the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge. Dr. Raman was also affiliated with the Hindu Community Center in Lenoir City. He became a U.S. citizen in 1972. Ram and his wife, Judy, a teacher with Oak Ridge schools, were married in 1967. A devoted husband and father, he frequently commented that he took his greatest pleasure in life from his three children, Anand, Manya and Jay. Besides his wife and children, Dr. Raman is survived by two daughters-in-law, Eily and Rebecca; and a granddaughter, Sarah Lakshmi. He had many other family, friends and colleagues. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Temple Beth El. The body will be cremated and his family will return his ashes to India, where a traditional Hindu service will be performed. Donations will be divided between the Temple Beth El and the Sri Krishna Samajam temple in Hyderabad, India, which was founded by Dr. Raman's father. John A. "Jack" Croes, 88, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, in Fort Myers, Fla. He was a member of Holy Ghost Church and had been a resident of Knoxville since 1938. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Laura Catherine Moran and Leopold Z. Croes. Mr. Croes graduated from Lehigh University in 1936 with a degree in chemical engineering and moved to Knoxville two years later. He worked for the Worthington Corporation as a sales engineer his entire career. He was active in the Concord Yacht Club for almost 40 years enjoying his lifelong passion of sailboat racing. His other hobbies included carpentry, a skill that he applied while volunteering his services to build handicapped facilities for disadvantaged people in the Knoxville area, constructing buildings and docks at the yacht club and adding on to his home as he added children to his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Adelyn "Addie" Kahrs Croes, who died in 1986, and a sister, Laura DeBonneville Croes. Mr. Croes is survived by his wife, Mary Acuff Croes; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Carroll Croes, of Clinton, and Peter and Jeanie Croes of Lakeland, Fla.; daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and Bill Tepe and Christine and Gary Hall, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Christine and Doug Derrick and Tracey and Scott Wilson, all of Atlanta, Ga., Alison Tepe-Guy and Ben Hall, Scott Hall and Brad Hall, all of Cincinnati and Amanda Tepe of Hollywood, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Emily Derrick, Evie Derrick, Addie Derrick and Claudia Derrick all of Atlanta, Ga., Tyson Guy of Cincinnati; and by his extended family which includes Tea Jr. and Sylvia Acuff and their children, Cassidy Acuff, Haley Acuff and Tea Acuff III, of Dallas, Texas, Don and Lynda Acuff and their children, Matthew Acuff and Rachel Acuff, of Loudon, Susan and Keith Dyer and their children, Jack Dyer and Josey Dyer, of North Augusta, S.C. and Janet and Stan Reinholz of Knoxville. A funeral Mass will be will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Holy Ghost Church. Burial will follow at Lynnhurst Cemetery. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Heart Association or to the Anderson County Emergency Preparedness Training Center, in care of Community Bank, 151 E. Broad Street, Clinton, TN 37716. This facility is under construction and is specifically designed to train area-wide first responders and law enforcement personnel, a project Mr. Croes was very interested in seeing completed after Sept. 11 and of which he has been the most generous donor to date, his family said. The family will receive friends at their convenience at Gentry-Griffey Funeral Chapel, in Fountain City. Helen Estelle Byrnes, 84, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born July 19, 1918, in Beverly, Mass., she was the daughter of Otis L. Lunn and Fannie Wood Lunn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Warner Byrnes, who died March 21, 1998, and five brothers, Ralph, Paul, Bob, Donald and Myron. Mrs. Byrnes is survived by a stepdaughter, Barbara Reagan and husband, Keith, of Oak Ridge; and by two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. A visitation and funeral will be held at S.W. Smith and Son Funeral Home in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, with the burial at Saint Georges Cemetery in Parrsboro. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements. Myrtle Jelf Mauney, 85, a resident of the Estates of Oak Ridge, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at her home. The middle child of William and Irene Jelf of Chattanooga, she was preceded in death by her older brother and younger sister, William and Mary Elizabeth. She was the widow of Thomas Henry Mauney and was also preceded in death by her grandson, Brett Alan Mayes. Mrs. Mauney had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1946 but moved to Wooster, Ohio, six years ago because of her illness. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge and had attended the United Methodist Church in Wooster. According to her family, she loved Oak Ridge and appreciated its uniqueness. For many years, she was an administrative secretary in the principal's office at Oak Ridge High School, where she was blessed with many friends, whom she considered family. She loved life, family, friends, the mountains, a good joke and duplicate bridge, for which she earned a life master certification. She was a member of the Oak Ridge and Wooster Duplicate Bridge Associations. Mrs. Mauney is survived by three daughters, Mary Mayes and her husband, Phillip, Kristen Clary and Sylvia Hurst; grandchildren, Ashley Long and her husband, David, Gretchen Hurst, Charles Clary, Preston Clary, Raven Clary, Austin Mayes and Scott Hurst; great-grandchildren, Taylor Long and Bradyn Long; and by several nieces and nephews. Roy Clary and Mike Hurst are her former sons-in-law. A service celebrating her life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family asked that individual acts of kindness be given to any Alzheimer's sufferer, caregiver or hospice organization. Cremation Options Inc. in Knoxville is in charge of arrangements. Donnie Jack Hilemon, 37, of Nashville, formerly of Anderson County, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at his home. Hilemon attended Clinton Senior High School, where he was captain of the 1984 football team and awarded the most valuable player award. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Hilemon, and a niece, Amanda Faulkner. Mr. Hilemon is survived by two sisters, his twin, Connie Hilemon Curtis and her husband, Mike Curtis of Lenior City and Kristina Burgos of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and two nieces, Krista Curtis of Lenoir City and Cierra Burgos of St. Petersburg. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Pine Grove Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Tony Brock officiating. Lorie Deneace Johnson, 30, of Clinton, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Ms. Johnson was born July 17, 1972, in Rockwood, the daughter of the Rev. Kenneth Johnson and Joy Gail Johnson, by whom she is survived. She lived in Oak Ridge before moving to Clinton in 1991. She was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Oliver Springs. She was a graduate of Temple Baptist Academy in Powell and was currently studying at Roane State Community College. While at Temple, she excelled in athletics, receiving all-district and all-conference recognition in basketball. She also received all-district, all-conference and all-state recognition in volleyball. She served as secretary of the Parent Teachers Organization at Grand Oaks Elementary School and also served as a substitute teacher. She was the Wolf Den leader of Den No. 2, Pack 222 Cub Scouts at Grand Oaks. She was also a certified pharmacy technician. She considered East Tennessee Pulmonary Associates as not only special caregivers but as family, her family said. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son, Xavier Jordan Johnson of Clinton; her sister, Lisa Dunn and her husband, Sean, of Clinton; her maternal grandfather, Willis "Bill" Jackson of Oliver Springs; her paternal grandmother, Reva Dean of Harriman; and a niece, Lauren Elizabeth Dunn of Clinton. She is also survived by two aunts and their husbands, Ronda and Dave Currier and Cherlyn and Jeff Brown, all of Harriman; and by cousins, Bill Jackson and his wife, Karen, Christy Martin and her husband, Max, Kim Nation and her husband, Scott, Garey Lowe and his wife, Carmen, Jennifer Best and her husband, Shane, Michelle Ownsby and her husband, Sean, David Currier and his wife, Bertha, Tabatha Seaton and Jacob Brown. Gerald Allen Henderson, 48, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at his residence. The son of Charles and Lois Wilcox Henderson, he was born Oct. 30, 1954, in Anderson County. He was a member of Farmers Grove Baptist Church and had worked as a bias cutter for Carlisle Industries in Clinton. His hobbies included fishing and camping. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Adam Wright. Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Renada Henderson; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and John Wallace of Clinton; a brother and sister-in-law, Donny and Carolyn Henderson of Clinton; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Sis and Will Reagan of Sevierville, and Pat and Willard Wright, Anne and Joe Seiber and Linda Jackson and fiancée, Lynn Collier, all of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews.
