Ms. Tarr, a long- time resident of Oak Ridge, earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Maine in 1951, and began her career with United Aircraft Corporation in East Hartford, Connecticut, that same year. In 1958, she came to Oak Ridge at the suggestion of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas B. Janney, Sr. of Oak Ridge. She continued her career at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where she was for many years a technical editor. She was editorial secretary of the Health Physics Journal there from 1961 to 1974. She retired in January of 1989; however, the reputation of her knowledge of English language and its exacting use resulted in numerous contract assignments with Martin Marietta Energy Systems and Midwest Technical until 1996. A local grand nephew was once pleasantly surprised to hear his great aunt cited in an advanced English course at the University of Tennessee as one of the finest technical editors ever known to the class professor. She enjoyed several hobbies including modeling of miniature furniture utilizing research of period design. She also enjoyed driving trips to vacation in New England and to visit her brother and sister and their families in Maine and Massachusetts. In recent years, she enjoyed working with a local nephew on a genealogy project that resulted in tracing her family to 17th century England. Attending scholastic presentations and sporting events of her grand nieces and nephews was a favorite activity. Her sister, Mrs. Douglas B. Janney, Sr. of Oak Ridge; her sister and brother- in-law, Dr. and Mrs. J. Robert Smyth of Amherst, Massachusetts, and her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Philip Tarr of Framingham, Massachusetts, survive her. She also leaves three dear friends: Ms. Carole Row and Ms. Dot Keller of Oak Ridge, and Mr. Raymond Millemann of Harriman. She was a favorite aunt of fifteen nieces and nephews, who all derived enjoyment and admiration from her wit, humor, and independence. Her local niece and nephews were Lisa Mott of Clinton, Pete Janney of Knoxville, and Douglas Janney, Jr., of Oak Ridge. Her family gratefully remembers her as a devoted and care-giving companion to her mother, Mrs. Omar F. Tarr, who lived in Oak Ridge from 1971 until her death in 1991 at age 99. In recent years, she had a particularly close and loving relationship with her niece, Mrs. Lisa Mott who, throughout her illness, remained by her side providing comfort and assistance. The family will receive friends at the Chapel of Holley Gamble Funeral Home, in Clinton, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2003. A funeral service will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Boyd Carter officiating. Following cremation, internment will be at the Memorial Garden of the United Church, Chapel on the Hill in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where she was a long- time member. The family requests, any memorials be in the form of donations to the Keystone Elder Daycare, at the First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. ===================================================== SUPPORT OUR TROOPS------FLY THE FLAG "Genealogy is like playing hide and seek: they hide...I seek!!!" www.byrge.com/genealogy/ Searching: BYRGE, BUNCH, DAUGHERTY, DUNCAN, KENNEDY, PATTERSON, PHILLIPS, SEIBER, TACKETT, WARD. =====================================================
