THOMAS C. - age 81, Oak Ridge, MADISON, EDGAR - age 88, Jacksboro, ===================================== COX, GERALD LYNN "JERRY" - age 56, of Clinton, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2003, surrounded by his daughters and loved ones. He had survived a long battle with leukemia and a successful bone marrow transplant. He died from related complications. Jerry was a United States Army Veteran who served during the Vietnam War and an accomplished guitarist. Preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett F. Cox. Jerry was born January 2, 1947 in Clinton. Survivors: daughters, April Hooper of Halls Crossroads and Stephanie Cox of Chattanooga, Maranda Ezell of Clinton; sisters,. Virginia Cox Croft of Dandridge, Lisa June Cox of Jackson, Linda Cox-Leija of Knoxville. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2003, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with funeral service following the visitation at 8:00 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday morning at Cox Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society, 446 Metroplex Drive, Suite A-200, Nashville, Tennessee, 37211. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, of Clinton, in charge of all arrangements. KELLY, MRS. BESSIE FREELS WHALEY - of Oakdale, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and wife, departed this life Friday morning, June 13, 2002 at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville. She was the last of 12 children born to Edward and Julie England Freels of Sunbright. She was a faithful member of Piney Baptist Church in Oakdale, where she taught Sunday school. She was a retired Nurse from Harriman City Hospital and operated a Village Grocery Store in Oakdale where she lived most of her early life. In her retirement years she was an avid gardener and raised prize-winning vegetables and flowers. She left legacies to all her children and grandchildren of great stories, finely crocheted afghans and beautiful hand-made quilts. She lived the life of a humble Christian and followed the golden rule to the letter. She often sang "Old Time" hymns at church. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Carlos William Whaley and their children, Carlos, Jr. (Braz) Whaley and daughters, Karleen Healy and Clarise Jones; second husband, Wilford Kelly; sister, Cassie Bertram; brothers, Theodore and Kermit Freels; half-sisters, Betty, Frona, Lucy, Cora, Dora and Hattie; half-brothers, Percy Hamby and Perry Goad. Surviving daughters and sons-in- law, Vi and Hugh Foster of Harriman, Vera and Paul Scarbrough of Oakdale; step-sons, Robert Kelly and wife, Mary and Charles Kelly, all of Knoxville. She also leaves her precious first set of grandchildren, Carlos and Doug Healy, Vera Pugh and John Edde (Bo), Connie Jones, Rory, Bryan and Kevin Foster, Todd Scarbrough and Meredith Woodward. In addition, she leaves nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Piney Baptist Church in Oakdale with the funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Pat McGee and Rev. Bill Young officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. LITTLE, MR. THOMAS C. - age 81, a resident of the Oak Ridge and Solway communities for the past 50 years, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mr. Little was born February 21, 1922, in Jackson, Ky., to Johnny and Lucy Little. During World War II, Mr. Little served in the 30th Division as an Army Medic. He was a graduate from the University of Kentucky with degrees in Biology and Metallurgical Engineering. Tom retired from Nuclear Weapons Program at the Y-12 plant, Oak Ridge, Tenn., where he was a Metallurgical Engineer for over 35 years. During his life he served in many important volunteer programs including the Boy Scouts of America as a scoutmaster, Habitat for Humanity and the National Park Service volunteer services. He was instrumental in the development of the House Mountain Trail near Knoxville. Tom was an avid hiker and led many hikes for the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club, hiking all 900 miles within the park. Preceding Tom in death were his parents, his wife, Eva Jane Garrison Little, and a brother, Glen Earl Little. He is survived by one brother, Charles S. Little of Beaver Creek, Ohio, one daughter, Rebecca L. Turpin and her husband, Perry of Winston-Salem, N.C., two sons, Scott Little of Cumming, Ga., and Steve Little of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two grandchildren, Olivia and Chelsea Ely of Winston- Salem, N.C., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 16, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the volunteer programs Mr. Little was involved with in lieu of flowers. The family will receive friends on Monday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at MADISON, EDGAR - age 88, of 177 M&M Lane, Jacksboro, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2003 at St. Mary's of Campbell County. He was a member of Bruce Gap Church of God. He was a member of Masonic Lodge of Jacksboro #322 for over 50 years and was also a member of Scottish Rites of Knoxville. He was a Coal Miner for 23 years, then moved to Dayton, Ohio and retired from Frigidaire in 1975 after 23 years. He loved to farm and go to the mountains. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. W.J. Madison and Susie Madison; brothers, Earnest and Silas and a sister, Ethel Phillips. Edgar is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dena (Stevens) Madison; sons, Lawrence (Judy) of Centerville, Ohio, Levon (Carol) of Dayton, Ohio, David of Fairborn, Ohio and Ronnie (Lucy) of Kettering, Ohio; daughters, Cora (Otis) Lester of Howard, Ohio, Phyllis (David) Bohannon of Brookeville, Ohio; 11 grandkids; 10 great-grandkids; brothers, Jim and Paul of Jacksboro; sisters, Evey and Georgia of Jacksboro; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003 at Bruce Gap Church of God, Rev. Pat Ayers officiating. Interment will be in Queener Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Cross Funeral Home with Masonic Service at 8:00 p.m. by Jacksboro Masonic Lodge #322.
