Medical Center following a long illness. Dewey served our country in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Vandalia. He retired from White Villa Grocers after serving over 14 years at the organization. Dewey is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ruby E. Wilson; one precious daughter, Janice Dent and son-in-law Johnny Dent, CA; one son, Clyde and wife Linda, Tipp City, OH; two grandsons, Johnny Lee and Sam Dent, CA; one granddaughter, Cheryl Wilson, West Alexandria, OH; four great grandchildren of CA and many friends and loved ones. Visitation was Monday June 16 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Newcomer-Farley Funeral Home. Funeral services followed with interment following in Dayton National Cemetery. James Calvin Phillips Sr. 65, of Caryville, died Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He was a member of Little Cove Creek Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Sarah Taylor Phillips; sister, Matilda Jaeger. Thelma Joe Miller, 55, of LaFollette, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at the Methodist Medical Center, Oak Ridge. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Della Cooper Brassfield. Thelma is survived by her husband, Roger E. Miller, LaFollette; step daughters, Mary Varble and Stacie Teague, both of LaFollette; grandchildren, Savanah Varble, Georgie Varble, Virginia Varble, Matthew Claiborne, Felicia Claiborne, and Ernest Teague; sister, Judy Ann Nelson, LaFollette; brothers, Danny Brassfield and friend Sarah Ruth Taylor, Middlesboro, KY and Ray Brassfield, LaFollette and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Barbara Ann McLaughlin, 59, of Woodbine, KY, died Thursday June 12, 2003 at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, KY. She is preceded in death by her father, Clyde Rose and brother, Charles Rose. She is survived her husband, Rick Richmond, Woodbine, KY; three sons, Larry Dale McLaughlin and wife Lisa, Christopher Michael McLaughlin and wife Carla, all of Toledo, OH Wesley Scott McLaughlin and wife Tammy, Kokomo, IN; six grandchildren, Shawn, Lauren, Shelby, Tyler, Ashley and Cassaundra; mother, Ada Rose, Toledo, OH; one brother, Gary Wayne Rose and wife Cynthia; one sister, Velma Burton and husband James, all of Toledo, OH; sister-in-law, Beverly Rose, Toledo, OH; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Roy Fletcher Martin, 77 of Lake City, died Friday, June 13, 2003 at his home. He was born July 5, 1925 in Anderson County to the late Milas T. and Minnie Parks Martin. He was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church. Roy was a U. S. Navy Veteran of WWII. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to work outside. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Dorothy Loving; brothers, Theodore Martin, Sydney Martin and Loyal Martin. Roy is survived by his wife of 59 years, Aline Dabney Martin, Lake City; son and daughter-in-laws, Dennie Roy and Kaye Martin, Union Mill, N.C., James Ronald and Joan Martin, Lake City; grandchildren, Januarie Noelle West, Jessica Brook Martin, April Elizabeth Boggs; great grandchildren, Nicholas Matthew Boggs, Charles Holland West; sisters, Zella Brady, Beatrice Sharp, both of Lake City, and Ruby Phillips, Oak Ridge; several nieces and nephews. She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Lenoir City. The last month of her life she was in the loving care of the wonderful staff of River Oaks Place, Lenoir City. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, David B. and Mollie Queener; husband, Herman Land. She is survived by her sister, Alma Blankenship, Winter Haven, FL; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Graveside services were Saturday, June 14 at the Jellico Cemetery. Shayne was born in Sarasota, FL., on May 24, 2002, the daughter of Wil Hughie and Dawn Marie Irwin. The family has lived in Rome since July 2002. Shayne is survived by her parents; two sisters, Emily and Katherine Irwin; one brother, William Jesse Irwin; grandparents, Mary Helen Irwin, MI, Owen Irwin, TN, Nancy Thompson, MI, Nick Zimmer, FL; great-grandmother, Elayne Kelly, FL. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Samantha Dodson; parents, Jacob Charles and Lois Greenwood Dodson and sister, Romana Pheiffer. Evelyn Cooper Byrd, 73, of 374 Asbury Road Jacksboro, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at St. Mary's Medical Center of Campbell County. She was a devoted Christian and a very faithful member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Evelyn operated the Campbell County Courthouse Concession Stand for many years. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, John Byrd; parents, Alfred Tackett, Lucy Tackett Cooper; adopted father, Dulan Cooper; brother, Virgil Tackett and sister, Dessie Tackett Phillips. She is survived by her sister, Ocie Lay, Norris; sister-in-law, Janice Tackett, Caryville, special friends, Jane Duncan, Jacksboro, and Minnie Malicoat, LaFollette; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services are Thursday, June 19 at 8 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church. Reverends Wesley Duncan and Clarence Duncan officiating. The family and friends will meet 11 a.m. on Friday at Mt. Pauline (Polly) Bartley, died at her home in LaFollette on Saturday, June 14, 2003. Mrs. Barley was raised in Speedwell, graduated from Powell Valley High School and came to LaFollette shortly before her marriage in 1942. She was retired from the Mountain Valley Economic Opportunity Authority and was currently the co-owner of Kenny's Pioneer and owner of Bartley's Self Storage in LaFollette. She was a long-time member of the LaFollette United Methodist Church. Polly is survived by her husband of 61 years, Kenneth White Bartley; son, Kenny Michael Bartley, LaFollette; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Bartley Wright and Douglas Wright, Clinton; grandchildren, Kenneth Stuart Bartley, LaFollette and Kristen Wright Heffern and her husband Todd Heffern, Johnson City; two sisters, Bonnie Bartley, LaFollette and Rosalie Edwards, Escondido, CA; brother-in-law, Glen Bartley, LaFollette; several nieces and nephews. The family received friends on Monday, June 16 at the LaFollette United Methodist Church and the funeral services followed. Reverends Malcolm Wansley and Don Thomas officiated. Member of the Joy Class of the LaFollette United Methodist Church served as Honorary Pallbearers. Graveside services were Tuesday, June 17 at Beeler Cemetery in Speedwell. Edgar Madison, 88, of 177 M&M Lane, Jacksboro, died Thursday, June 12, 2003 at St. Mary's of Campbell County. He was a member of Bruce Gap Church of God. He was a member of Masonic Lodge of Jacksboro #322 for over 50 years and also a member of Scottish Rites of Knoxville. He was a coal miner for 23 years, then moved to Dayton, Ohio and retired from Frigidaire in 1975 after 23 years. He loved to farm and go in the mountains. Edgar is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. W.J. Madison, and Susie Madison; brothers, Earnest and Silas; sister, Ethel Phillips. Edgar is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dena (Stevens) Madison; sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Judy Madison, Centerville, OH, Leven and Carol Madison, Dayton, OH; David Madison, Fairborn OH and Ronnie and Lucy Madison, Kettering OH; daughters and sons-in-law, Cora (Otis) Lester, Howard, O Phylis and David Bohannon, Brookville OH; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Jim and Paul, Jacksboro; sisters, Evey and Georgia, Jacksboro; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. William "Bill" Goins, 84 of 1008 West Walden Street, LaFollette died Monday, June 16, 2003 at the Sunbridge Nursing Home. He was a veteran of World War II. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Reba Goins and parents, Isham and Nannie Bell Smith Goins; three sisters, Effie Lee Ledford, Mary Summers, and Ava Goins; two brothers, Hubert Goins and Robert Goins. He is survived by two very special sisters-in-law, Goldie Cox and Muriel King who took care of him; five nieces and three nephews and other relatives and friends who loved him dearly. Funeral services were Wednesday, June 18 in the Chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home. Rev. Don Reynolds officiated. Interment will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday before the funeral services.
