Big Island is an island in the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River at No Busienss (now in the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area). It is known for being at or near the site of the so-called Battle of Brimstone during the Civil War when a rag-tag group of Champ Ferguson's Confederates descended on the settlement, holed up overnight in a small cabin, and then were attacked by the Scott County Home Guard, made up primarily of the men of that little community. Several Rebels were killed and one or more were buried on Big Island. Years later a flood exposed the bones and the women of the community removed them from the island and reburied them at a site on shore.
