Johnston, 86, of Oak Ridge, Zelphia Rice, of Oak Ridge, Luzelle Lipscomb Slaughter, of Oak Ridge, Melbourne Lee Winton, of Oak Ridge, ========================================= Edwin Robert Humphreys, 73, of Oliver Springs, formerly of Kingston, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Sept. 20, 1930, in Roane County, he was the son of Taylor Blair Humphreys and Roberta Walker Humphreys. He was a lifelong resident of Roane and Anderson counties. Mr. Humphreys was retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he worked as a fire inspector. He was a member of local labor union No. 818 and the Atomic Trades and Labor Council. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church and attended Oliver Springs United Methodist Church. Mr. Humphreys was a 32nd degree Master Mason and a member of the Paint Rock Masonic Lodge No. 367 F&AM. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Kerbella Temple in Knoxville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gwain Humphreys and Merle Humphreys, and by an infant sister. Mr. Humphreys is survived by his wife, Willa Humphreys; three sons, Steven R. Humphreys and wife, Vicki, of Tracy, Calif., Michael Humphreys and wife, Lynn, of Kingston, and Bryan Humphreys and wife, Anita, of Knoxville; his daughter, Teresa Strickland and husband, Roger V., of Kingston; his stepson, David J. Chamblee Sr. and wife, Sharon, of Oliver Springs; and by his stepdaughter, Sally Chamblee Lovin and husband, Richard B., of Knoxville. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Wendy Colyer, Gabe Patterson, Cortney Strickland, Garrett Strickland, Misty Newby, Aaron Humphreys, Adam Humphreys, Autumn Humphreys, Jordan Humphreys and Savannah Humphreys; four stepgrandchildren, David Chamblee II, Raven Chamblee, Mike Lopez and Steve Lopez; six great-grandchildren, Seth Colyer, Whitney Colyer, Gage Patterson, Sophia Patterson, Brantley Humphreys and Cailynn Shelley; five brothers, Edward Humphreys, his twin, and wife, Elsie, of Kingston, and Walker Humphreys and wife, Jean, Don Humphreys and wife, Brenda, Lynn Humphreys and wife, Ruth, and Glen Humphreys and wife, Brenda, all of Philadelphia, Tenn.; two sisters, Geraldine Shanahan and husband, Billy, of Ten Mile, and Janice Frisbee and husband, Marvin, of Philadelphia; his sister-in-law, Ida Humphreys, of Kingston; and by several nieces, nephews, friends and extended family members. The family wishes to thank the staff at Mariner Health of Norris for the care given to Mr. Humphreys during his illness. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Lois Ann Farquharson, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the Oak Ridge Retirement Community. Born Feb. 8, 1923, in Chatham, Va., she was the daughter of Homer and Mamie Amos. She was a graduate of Lewis Gale Nursing School in Roanoke, Va. She came to Oak Ridge in 1944, as a registered nurse to work for the hospital. In 1945, she married John Farquharson, who was on assignment in Oak Ridge with the Special Engineering Detachment. They lived many years in Lenoir City before moving back to Oak Ridge in 1990. Mrs. Farquharson was a member of First Christian Church and served the church as deacon, elder and president of the Christian Women's Fellowship. According to her family, she enjoyed many hobbies such as gardening, collecting antiques, bridge, reading and traveling. Her family said she will be remembered as a devoted, loving wife and mother, and source of joy for many dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years in 1999; a sister, Eva Mae Rose; and by her brother, Homer J. Amos Jr. Mrs. Farquharson is survived by her daughter, Jo Ann King and husband, David; two sons, George Farquharson and wife, Carol, and John Amos Farquharson and wife, Kelli; four grandchildren, Lee Ann Shelton and husband, Steve, Amy Beth Cauthorn and husband, Skip, Courtney Farquharson and Sgt. Nathan Farquharson of the United States Air Force; and by two great-grandsons, Cade Shelton and Cannon Shelton. She is also survived by two sisters, Frances Corbin of Roanoke and Hazel Crider of Chatham; two sisters-in-law, Mary Venneman and Verna Farquharson, both of New York; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at First Christian Church with the Rev. Jack Russell officiating. A private graveside service will be Saturday afternoon at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Tilford Leonard Kiser, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Briarcliff Health Care Center. Born Feb. 20, 1917, in Silmer, he was the son of Will and Dora Leonard Kiser. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He retired from the city of Oak Ridge, where he served as superintendent of the city garage. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Kiser, in 2001; two daughters, Norma Jean Leach and Carolyn Hanley; a granddaughter, Donna Bingham; and by three brothers and one sister. Mr. Kiser is survived by his son, Buddy Kiser and wife, Billie, of Madisonville; two sons-in-law, Larry Leach of Kingston and Don Hanley of Oak Ridge; four grandchildren, Marilyn Kiser, Cheryl Kiser, Debora Newman and Tony Leach; four great-grandchildren, Nathan Bingham, Bradlee Royster, Cory Newman and Joshua Leach; his step-granddaughter, Deb Raper and husband, David; two stepgreat-granchildren, Justin Raper and Jordy Raper; and by several nieces and nephews. Cody Thomas Rice, 3 days old, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville. Born Dec. 27, 2003, he was the son of Tommy and Christie Slagle Rice of Oak Ridge. He was preceded in death by two great-grandfathers, Claude Tipton on Sept. 18, 1987, and Milton Rice on Dec. 12, 1974. In addition to his parents, Cody is survived by his sister, Katie Nicole Rice; his maternal grandparents, Tony and Caroll Slagle, of Claxton; his paternal grandparents, George and Judy Rice of Oak Ridge; his maternal great-grandmother, Margie Chapman, of Bowling Green, Ky.; and by two paternal great-grandmothers, Anne Tipton and Sue Rice, both of Oak Ridge. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Erma Thomas "Maisie" Tunnell, 89, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. Born Dec. 27, 1914, in Swain County in North Carolina, she was the daughter of Alphonso Cleveland Thomas and Lillian Nell Thomas. Only 15 when she graduated from Alcoa High School, Mrs. Tunnell attended Maryville College and graduated at age 19. Her first teaching job was on the isolated Cherokee Indian Reservation in Snowbird, N.C. The only non-Cherokee living on the reservation, she taught approximately 30 non-English speaking Cherokee children in a one-room schoolhouse. Mrs. Tunnell later held elementary and high school teaching positions in Maryville and Johnson City. She obtained her master's degree in physical education from the University of Tennessee in 1940. Two years later, she married William C. "Bill" Tunnell, and in 1943 they moved to Oak Ridge, where her husband was employed as a design engineer for Union Carbide Nuclear Division. The couple was active in the city's formative years. Mrs. Tunnell was a founding member of the local Girl Scout chapter, as well as the Lioness Club and the Power Squadron Auxiliary. Through the years, she was active in the Oak Ridge Playhouse, the Children's Museum, the Cub Scouts, the Anderson County Republican Party and Kern United Methodist Church. She was a frequent substitute teacher for the Oak Ridge school system. Her husband was elected to Oak Ridge's first city council in 1949. She and her husband frequently traveled abroad and were avid boaters. According to her family, the houseboat the couple built together remains the oldest houseboat on Norris Lake. She moved to Atlanta following her husband's death in 1997 to be nearer to her two sons and their families. Mrs. Tunnell is survived by her elder son, Bill and wife, Karen, and their children, Dylan, 20, and Leila, 15; and by her younger son, Scott and wife, Beth, and their daughter, Laura, 20. Eunivee McClure, 60, of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospice in Knoxville. Born Aug. 7, 1943, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Tom Kennedy and Lassie Phillips Kennedy, both now deceased. She was a lifelong resident of Anderson County and was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Owen "Sam" McClure. Mrs. McClure is survived by two sons, Kenneth Kennedy of Clinton and Franklin Kennedy and wife, Kim, of Oliver Springs; 13 stepchildren; three grandchildren, Kayla Renee Kennedy, John David Samuel Kennedy and Joseph Scott Kennedy; her brother, Jacob Kennedy and wife, Nancy, of Cambridge, Ohio; and by two sisters, Eunice Phillips and Euvine Justice, both of Oliver Springs. George Robert Goebel, 58, of Clinton, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He is survived by his wife, Carol Goebel; his son, George R. Goebel Jr.; and by his mother, Bertha Goebel. The funeral will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Weatherford Mortuary.
